Disentangling the belief in God and cognitive rigidity/flexibility components of religiosity to predict racial and value-violating prejudice: A Post-Critical Belief Scale analysis

    No full text
Past research indicates that being religious is associated with prejudice toward racial and value-violating out-groups. However, this past research treated religiosity as a unidimensional construct without taking into account how different components of religiosity-belief in a higher power and the rigidity/flexibility of religious beliefs-are associated with measures of prejudice. Two studies examined the relationship between these two components of religiosity, as measured by the Post-Critical Beliefs Scale, and racial (African Americans, Arabs) and value-violating prejudices (atheists, gay men). As the flexibility of religious beliefs increased (literal vs. symbolic dimension), attitudes toward racial and value-violating out-groups became more positive (Study 1). As belief in God strengthened (exclusion vs. inclusion of transcendence dimension), attitudes toward value-violating out-groups became more negative. Study 2 demonstrated that these two components of religiosity fully mediated the relationship between general religiosity and prejudice toward African Americans, Arabs, and gay men and partially mediated the relationship between religiosity and prejudice toward atheists. Results are discussed in light of reexamining the conclusion that simply being religious is associated with prejudice. © 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd

    Postmodern Perspectives on Human Dignity

    No full text
Human dignity is a foundational concept in ethics, especially with regard to the applied fields of medical ethics and bioethics. According to Roberto Andorno, “The emphasis on human dignity is impressive enough to lead scholars to characterize this notion as ‘the shaping principle’ of international bioethics” (Andorno 2009: 227). It is also one of the more vague concepts, typically occurring in official documents without definition. For instance, the term dignity occurs five times in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (United Nations 1948), but no definitive meaning is attached to the term within the document. Similar to other ethical concepts, there is no clear and distinct definition for human dignity, but we are somehow expected to “know it when we see it.”

Understanding electronic systems in semiconductor quantum dots

    No full text
Systems of confined electrons are found everywhere in nature in the form of atoms where the orbiting electrons are confined by the Coulomb attraction of the nucleus. Advancement of nanotechnology has, however, provided us with an alternative way to confine electrons by using artificial confining potentials. A typical structure of this nature is the quantum dot, a nanoscale system which consists of few confined electrons. There are many types of quantum dots ranging from self-assembled to miniaturized semiconductor quantum dots. In this work we are interested in electrostatically confined semiconductor quantum dot systems where the electrostatic confining potential that traps the electrons is generated by external electrodes, doping, strain or other factors. A large number of semiconductor quantum dots of this type are fabricated by applying lithographically patterned gate electrodes or by etching on two-dimensional electron gases in semiconductor heterostructures. Because of this, the whole structure can be treated as a confined two-dimensional electron system. Quantum confinement profoundly affects the way in which electrons interact with each other, and external parameters such as a magnetic field. Since a magnetic field affects both the orbital and the spin motion of the electrons, the interplay between quantum confinement, electron-electron correlation effects and the magnetic field gives rise to very interesting physical phenomena. Thus, confined systems of electrons in a semiconductor quantum dot represent a unique opportunity to study fundamental quantum theories in a controllable atomic-like setup. In this work, we describe some common theoretical models which are used to study confined systems of electrons in a two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dot. The main emphasis of the work is to draw attention to important physical phenomena that arise in confined two-dimensional electron systems under various quantum regimes. © 2013 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Energy in a finite two-dimensional spinless electron gas

    No full text
We study the properties of a finite two-dimensional electron gas system in the Hartree-Fock approximation. We obtain exact analytical expressions for the energy in a finite two-dimensional fully spin-polarized (spinless) system of electrons interacting with a Coulomb potential immersed in a finite square region uniformly filled with a neutralizing positive charge. The difficult two-electron integrals over the finite square domain are reduced to simple compact expressions involving analytic auxiliary functions. We provide results for the potential energy of systems with a finite number of electrons and show how the energy slowly converges towards its thermodynamic limit bulk value. © 2013 © 2013 Author(s)

Quantum dots: Applications, synthesis and characterization

    No full text
Nanoscience and nanotechnology is continuously moving forward enabling the precise, controlled fabrication of structures and devices at atomic and molecular scales. Quantum dots are typically semiconductor nanocrystals that have gained tremendous attention due to their unique electronic, magnetic, chemical and optical properties. They have proven very useful in applications in many fields across the physical, engineering, chemical, biological and medical sciences. In this book, tha authors give an overview of the progress and major research developments in the field of quantum dots over the past two decades. They specifically focus on discussing the cutting-edge applications in the fields of information technology, electronics, biotechnology, energy, medicine, cellular imaging and diagnostic bio-sensing. © 2012 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Adaptation and Mitigation in Long-term Climate Policy

    No full text
The paper analytically explores the optimal allocation of investments into mitigation and environmental adaptation against climate change damages at a macroeconomic level. The economic-environmental model is formulated as a social planner problem where adaptation and abatement investments are separate decision variables. The existence of a unique steady state is proven. A comparative static analysis of optimal investments leads to essential implications for associated long-term environmental policies. It is shown that the optimal policy mix between adaptation and mitigation is lower for countries with higher economic efficiency for all applicable parameter ranges. Data calibration and numerical simulations are provided to estimate practical validity of theoretical outcomes. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

In this article, we verify the existence of solution to boundary value problem of nonlinear fractional differential equation involving Caputo fractional derivatives. We obtain new existence results based on nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder type and Krasnoselskiis fixed point theorem. At the end, two illustrative examples have been presented
