Molecular morphology and function of bull spermatozoa linked to histones and associated with fertility
Sub-par fertility in bulls is influenced by alterations in sperm chromatin, and it might not be solved with increased sperm concentration in artificial insemination. Appropriate histone retention during sperm chromatin condensation plays critical roles in male fertility. The objective of this study was to determine failures of sperm chromatin condensation associated with abnormal persistence or accessibility of histones by aniline blue (ANBL) test, expression levels, and cellular localizations of one variant and two core histones (H3.3, H2B, and H4 respectively) in the spermatozoa of low-fertility (LF) vs high-fertility (HF) bulls. The expression levels and cellular localizations of histones in spermatozoa were studied using immunoblotting, immunocytochemistry, and staining methods. The bioinformatics focused on the sequence identity and evolutionary distance of these proteins among three mammalian species: bovine, mouse, and human. We demonstrated that ANBL staining was different within the LF (1.73 (0.55, 0.19)) and HF (0.67 (0.17, 0.06)) groups (P\u3c0.0001), which was also negatively correlated with in vivo bull fertility (r= - 0.90, P\u3c0.0001). Although these histones were consistently detectable and specifically localized in bull sperm cells, they were not different between the two groups. Except H2B variants, H3.3 and H4 showed 100% identity and were evolutionarily conserved in bulls, mice and humans. The H2B variants were more conserved between bulls and humans, than in mice. In conclusion, we showed that H2B, H3.3, and H4 were detectable in bull spermatozoa and that sperm chromatin condensation status, changed by histone retention, is related to bull fertility. © 2013 Society for Reproduction and Fertility
Satrapm, a customizable web-based project management software
SatraPM is a web-based software package, aiming to help project managers to easily handle their construction projects via internet. This software is capable of handling all projects of an organization, in which all projects can be defined in EPS the same as users in OBS. A 3D accessing module links EPS, OBS and inherent functions in order to provide a secure environment for the data to be processed throughout the system. This paper intends to take a deeper look at capabilities of SatraPM in helping project managers to keep track of and control their construction projects as well as its potential future features
Ferrite nanoparticles for future heart diagnostics
Normally, CoFe2O4 has been known as ferromagnetic ferrite with a quite large magnetic moment. However, since we aim to inject the particles into the human body, we are also interested in ZnFe2O 4 because in the human body, Fe and Zn exist, so that adding ZnFe2O4 is safer. In both cases, the nanoparticles are coated by silica in order to get rid of toxicity. Our main purpose is to test whether these nanoparticles affect the contractile function of heart cells. Our results on rat\u27s heart cells have shown that both Zn and Co ferrites improved the contractility of heart cells. Notably, although both nanoparticles increased contraction and delayed relaxation, Co ferrites induced a greater contraction but with a slower relaxation. We can theoretically argue that the magnetization effects of the quantum dots have a considerable effect on the pulsating properties of the heart cells. Through this effect, the locally applied magnetic field is able to induce as well as turn on/off various regular beating patterns, thus, resetting the heart beatings. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Analytic formulas for small systems of electrons at odd denominator filling factors of the lowest Landau level
The fractional quantum Hall effect (or integer quantum Hall effect) is a quantum-mechanical version of the classical Hall effect observed in two-dimensional electron systems at vey low temperatures and subject to strong perpendicular magnetic fields. Under these extreme conditions the Hall conductivity becomes quantized signaling the creation of a novel collective quantum liquid electronic state of matter at absolute zero temperature. Impurities are important for both the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. While the integer version can be understood even without interactions, the fractional quantum Hall effect originates from strong Coulomb interactions between electrons. This unique fact has stimulated a great deal of research and has contributed to the overall progress of the field of theoretical condensed matter physics. The most pronounced fractional quantum Hall states occur at odd denominator filling factors of the lowest Landau level and are described by the Laughlin wave function. It is well-known that exact closed-form solutions for many-body wave functions, including the Laughlin wave function, are generally very rare and hard to obtain. In this work we present some exact results corresponding to small systems of electrons in the fractional quantum Hall regime at odd denominator filling factors. Use of Jacobi coordinates is the key tool that facilitates the exact calculation of various quantities. Expressions involving integrals over many variables are considerably simplified with the help of Jacobi coordinates allowing us to calculate exactly various quantities corresponding to systems with several electrons. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. Exposing minority students to careers in transportation and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
The aging of the American workforce will lead to shortages in skilled workers throughout the country in the near future. Minorities are already underrepresented in the transportation industry, and without immediate intervention the conditions will not improve. To address the anticipated shortfall in skilled minority labor, FHWA, in coordination with the South Carolina Department of Transportation and South Carolina State University, developed the Summer Transportation Institute. In the Texas Gulf Coast region, the Center for Transportation Training and Research at Texas Southern University has introduced the transportation industry to minority high school students while emphasizing the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills in tomorrow\u27s workplace through summer education programs for nearly 10 years. A study examines the core curriculum of those programs and discusses their potential applicability in other regions of Texas
Factors related to posttraumatic growth in u.s. and japanese college students
The present study examined variables contributing to perceived benefits in the aftermath of traumatic events or posttraumatic growth (PTG) in U.S. (N-182) and Japanese (N-163) college students. Specifically, PTSD symptoms (intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal), optimism, and number of traumas experienced were examined in relation to posttraumatic growth. The results showed that in both samples, PTSD symptoms and number of traumas experienced were significantly and positively related with PTG, and PTSD symptoms were positively correlated with number of traumas experienced. Also, the results from a multiple regression analysis revealed that the intrusion, optimism, and number of traumas experienced contributed to PTG, but avoidance and hyperarousal were independent of PTG in both samples. This finding suggests that mental health practitioners could consider intrusion as not only pathology but also as one of the factors contributing to PTG in both U.S. and Japanese college students. © 2011 American Psychological Association
