Coulomb potential and energy of a uniformly charged cylindrical shell

    No full text
Knowledge of electrical potential and energy is important to systems where electrostatic forces play a role. We calculate exactly the electrostatic potential of a uniformly charged cylindrical shell at an arbitrary point in space as well as its electrical energy. The expressions derived are applicable to cylindrical models containing charged particles and certain biological systems with cylindrical symmetry. An explicit analytical formula is provided for the total energy in terms of a class of special functions known as generalized Hypergeometric functions. The expressions when written in one-dimensional integral form are very suitable for numerical calculations

Exploring an intelligent tutoring system as a conversation-based assessment tool for reading comprehension

    No full text
Reading comprehension is often assessed by having students read passages and administering a test that assesses their understanding of the text. Shorter assessments may fail to give a full picture of comprehension ability while more thorough ones can be time consuming and costly. This study used data from a conversational intelligent tutoring system (AutoTutor) to assess reading comprehension ability in 52 low-literacy adults who interacted with the system. We analyzed participants’ accuracy and time spent answering questions in conversations in lessons that targeted four theoretical components of comprehension: Word, Textbase, Situation Model, and Rhetorical Structure. Accuracy and answer response time were analyzed to track adults’ proficiency for comprehension components, and we analyzed whether the four components predicted reading grade level. We discuss the results with respect to the advantages that a conversational intelligent tutoring system assessment may provide over traditional assessment tools and the linking of theory to practice in adult literacy

Emergence of liquid crystalline order in the lowest Landau level of a quantum Hall system with internal anisotropy

    No full text
It has now become evident that interplay between internal anisotropy parameters (such as electron mass anisotropy and/or anisotropic coupling of electrons to the substrate) and electron-electron correlation effects can create a rich variety of possibilities especially in quantum Hall systems. The electron mass anisotropy or material substrate effects (for example, the piezoelectric effect in GaAs) can lead to an effective anisotropic interaction potential between electrons. For lack of knowledge of realistic ab-initio potentials that may describe such effects, we adopt a phenomenological approach and assume that an anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential mimics the internal anisotropy of the system. In this work we investigate the emergence of liquid crystalline order at filling factor ν = 1/6 of the lowest Landau level, a state very close to the point where a transition from the liquid to the Wigner solid happens. We consider small finite systems of electrons interacting with an anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential and study the energy stability of an anisotropic liquid crystalline state relative to its isotropic Fermi-liquid counterpart. Quantum Monte Carlo simulation results in disk geometry show stabilization of liquid crystalline order driven by an anisotropic Coulomb interaction potential at all values of the interaction anisotropy parameter studied

Complexes of lutein with bovine and caprine caseins and their impact on lutein chemical stability in emulsion systems: Effect of arabinogalactan

    No full text
Lutein is an important xanthophyll carotenoid with many benefits to human health. Factors affecting the application of lutein as a functional ingredient in low-fat dairy-like beverages (pH 6.0–7.0) are not well understood. The interactions of bovine and caprine caseins with hydrophobic lutein were studied using UV/visible spectroscopy as well as fluorescence. Our studies confirmed that the aqueous solubility of lutein is improved after binding with bovine and caprine caseins. The rates of lutein solubilization by the binding to bovine and caprine caseins were as follows: caprine αS1-II-casein 34%, caprine αS1-I-casein 10%, and bovine casein 7% at 100 μM lutein. Fluorescence of the protein was quenched on binding supporting complex formation. The fluorescence experiments showed that the binding involves tryptophan residues and some nonspecific interactions. Scatchard plots of lutein binding to the caseins demonstrated competitive binding between the caseins and their sites of interaction with lutein. Competition experiments suggest that caprine αS1-II casein will bind a larger number of lutein molecules with higher affinity than other caseins. The chemical stability of lutein was largely dependent on casein type and significant increases occurred in the chemical stability of lutein with the following pattern: caprine αS1-II-casein \u3e caprine αS1-I-casein \u3e bovine casein. Addition of arabinogalactan to lutein-enriched emulsions increases the chemical stability of lutein-casein complexes during storage under accelerated photo-oxidation conditions at 25°C. Therefore, caprine αS1-II-casein alone and in combination with arabinogalactan can have important applications in the beverage industry as carrier of this xanthophyll carotenoid (lutein)

    Incomplete Generalized (p; q; r)-Tribonacci Polynomials

In this paper, we consider an extension of the tribonacci polynomial, which we will refer to as the generalized (p; q; r)-tribonacci polynomial, denoted by Tn;m(x).We find an explicit formula for Tn;m(x)which we use to introduce the incomplete generalized (p; q; r)-tribonacci polynomials and derive several properties. An explicit formula for the generating function of the incomplete generalized polynomials is determined and a combinatorial interpretation is provided yielding further identities

Linear Stability Analysis with Solution Patterns due to Varying Thermal Diffusivity for a Convective Flow in a Porous Medium

    Get PDF
Here we investigate the effect of the vertical rate of change in thermal diffusivity due to a hydrothermal convective flow in a horizontal porous medium. The continuity equation, the heat equation and the momentum-Darcy equation constitute the governing system for the flow in a porous medium. Assuming a vertically varying basic state, we derive the linear system and from this linear system, we compute the critical Rayleigh and wave numbers. Using fourth-order Runge-Kutta and shooting methods, we obtain the marginal stability curves and linear solutions to analyze the solution pattern for different diffusivity parameters

Numerical Study of Singular and Delta Shock Solutions Using a Large Time Step Method

    Get PDF
We illustrate recently proposed large time step method for hyperbolic conservation laws. In the scalar case, it was proved earlier that if the approximate solutions converge boundedly, then they converge to the entropy solution. The main goal of this paper is to consider the large time step method for several systems of hyperbolic conservation laws. We compute approximate solutions to Riemann problems for three genuinely nonlinear one-dimensional systems (the Keyfitz-Kranzer system, the isentropic generalized Chaplygin gas dynamics equations, and the isentropic gas dynamics equations for polytropic gases with vanishing pressure). Besides approximating solutions that contain shocks and rarefaction waves, the focus is on approximating solutions which contain singular and delta shocks

A Mathematical Study for the Existence and Survival of Human Population in a Polluted Environment

    Get PDF
Rapidly rising population and increasing urbanization have the potential for producing a high level of pollution. Pollutants have the ability to change the distributions of patterns of plants and animals. Some of the main pollutant categories are water pollutants, air pollution, pesticides, and radioactive waste. Most abundantly toxicants are produced by the chemical and medical industries. We used food crops that are produced by using pesticide and herbicides, etc. Due to the enormous variety of toxic substances are present in the atmosphere, it is challenging task to determine the potential ecological and human health risk. Keeping all these things in mind, in this paper, a non-linear mathematical model is developed to examine the existence and survival of the human population in a polluted environment. For this, we have assumed four variables the human population, population pressure, urbanization, and toxicants and considered that the human population propagates logistically, urbanization and toxicants propagate at the constant rate. The qualitative analysis of the system shows that the rapid increase in urbanization increases the toxicants in the environment which causes the growth of the human population decrease. Some numerical simulations are also made to examine the validity of the model
