No full text
Zoom sur la recherche / Research focusIn most households, parents must work in order to provide for their families. However, childcare responsibilities can constrain the time available to work, particularly for mothers. On the other hand, older children’s contributions to household production can allow parents to reallocate time to other activities. This study explores how adults with school-aged children in Kenya adjusted their labor supply in response to changes in their time constraints during COVID-19 school closures. We consider whether childcare demands or child labor contributions are more important in determining parents’ labor supply, an important question for schooling and childcare policies.

Natural products, whether plants, algae or micro-organisms, are a major source of bioactive compounds of interest in the prevention or treatment of various pathologies. Thanks to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, these compounds are being extensively studied in the context of complex pathologies such as obesity. Obesity, which is characterised by excessive expansion of adipose tissue, is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which contributes to the development and/or maintenance of multiple pathologies, including metabolic, cardiovascular, autoimmune, skin and certain cancers. Targeting both adipose tissue and the inflammation associated with it may therefore be an ideal strategy for preventing the onset, aggressiveness and recurrence of certain diseases. The first part of this work involved developing PHYTO-POSTBIOTICS (plants fermented by bacteria). To do this, eleven bacterial strains and two prebiotics were selected for fermentation, enabling the activity of around twenty extracts to be developed and compared. Screening to compare their ability to reduce the production of leukocyte reactive oxygen species (ROS) led to the selection of two extracts with promising antioxidant effects: 1/ an extract derived from the fermentation of chicory by Akkermansia muciniphila (C-Akm, on EFSA's Novel Food list) and 2/ an extract derived from the fermentation of chicory by Bacteroides fragilis (C-B. fragilis, not on any list) and its supernatant (PPS).These extracts were assessed for their ability to target inflammatory and overweight biomarkers using different cell models. C-Akm reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFNγ and IL-17A), down-modulated the polarisation of pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages and increased the secretion of adiponectin. PPS extract decreases the polarisation of M1 macrophages and reduces lipid accumulation in adipocytes, suggesting a potential beneficial effect of this extract in the prevention of overweight/obesity.The second section of this research examined the effects of C-B.fragilis extract and its PPS on psoriasis, specifically in overweight situations, given the substantial correlations between psoriasis and obesity. We demonstrated using human psoriatic keratinocytes (from biopsies) that the PPS extract seems to be the most effective in reducing skin inflammation by both increasing the expression of filaggrin, which is down-regulated in psoriasis and involved in the barrier function, and decreasing the secretion of inflammatory mediators (S100A7) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-1β).In addition, we evaluated a plant extract, i.e. Ampelopsis grossedentata (selected in Labcom as an anti-inflammatory, IECIC list), for potential use in synergy with PPS in the prevention/therapy of psoriasis. By decreasing the generation of ROS, polarizing M1 macrophages, lowering the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFNγ, IL-12, IL-2, and IL-17A), and interacting with the NF-κB and inflammasome pathways, Ampelopsis grossedentata exhibits interesting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Nevertheless, no synergistic impact of the PPS extract and the Ampelopsis grossedentata extract was observed in our preliminary investigations.Although further studies are required to confirm their clinical efficacy and long-term safety, these results are promising and pave the way for a preventive/complementary strategy to conventional treatments in the management of obesity, inflammation and inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis.

Strangeness production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at s = 5.02{\bf \sqrt{s}~=~5.02} TeV

No full text
International audience(Multi-)strange particle production rates and transverse momentum distributions are measured at midrapidity (y<0.5|y| < 0.5) as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity density by the ALICE experiment at the LHC, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s = 5.02{\bf \sqrt{s}~=~5.02}~TeV. This study extends similar studies performed at s = 7{\bf \sqrt{s}~=~7}~TeV and s = 13{\bf \sqrt{s}~=~13}~TeV to a lower energy regime, improving the statistical precision and extending the measurement to previously unexplored low-multiplicity regions. While KS0K_S^0, ΛΛ, and ΞΞ yields can be described with a linear multiplicity dependence within uncertainties, the ΩΩ yields follow a significantly faster than linear increasing trend. For all analyzed particles, the overall production rate is consistent with those observed at higher energy and at similar multiplicity densities. Transverse momentum distributions are observed to evolve with multiplicity. Several state-of-the-art QCD-inspired Monte Carlo models have been compared to the data, testing some recently introduced features to address the findings at higher energies. Models can qualitatively describe the transverse momentum spectra and the Λ/KS0Λ/K_S^0 spectral ratio only if collectivity is introduced in the evolution of the system

Calzone: A Geant4 Python wrapper for the simulation of outdoor particle detectors

No full text
Calzone (CALorimeter ZONE) is a Python package built on top of Geant4. It was developed in the context of geosciences with the objective of studying the emission of radioactivity from volcanoes, and in particular to simulate the response of gamma spectrometers deployed in the field. To this end, Calzone was developed in conjunction with Goupil, a backward gamma transport engine, and is interoperable with the latter. Yet, both packages can be used entirely independently, if necessary

The role of Hadean and Archean processes in defining the composition of the Earth's mantle: Magma ocean, crust-mantle differentiation, and formation of the atmosphere

No full text
International audienceIsotopic studies of refractory lithophile elements in Earth's oldest rocks and minerals provide the most robust information about the Hadean-Archean evolution of the silicate Earth. Traces of deep magma ocean crystallization have potentially been preserved in mantle-derived Archean rocks. Coupled 146,147Sm-142,143Nd systematics studies suggest that the terrestrial magma ocean crystallized around 4.4 Ga just after the Moon-forming giantimpact. The first protocrust, mafic in composition, was also formed at 4.4 Ga. The nature and relationship between the protocrust and the depleted mantle remain unresolved. The atmosphere is composed of both degassing products from the Earth's mantle and products delivered during the late stage of Earth's accretion. New insights will be gained by measuring trapped paleo-atmospheric gases in geological samples

Effects of Resistance Training on Muscular Adaptations and Inflammatory Markers in Overweight and Obese Men

No full text
International audiencePurpose Obesity may blunt exercise responsiveness to improve muscular adaptations. The effect of resistance training (RT) targeting different body regions on muscle and inflammatory markers is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of upper (upper body exercises), lower (lower body exercises), or combined (upper body + lower body exercises) RT on muscle and inflammatory markers, body composition, and performance in overweight and obese men. Methods Sixty overweight and obese men (age, 31 ± 4 yr) were randomly assigned to one of four groups: upper-body RT (UB; n = 15), lower-body RT (LB; n = 15), combined RT (UB + LB; n = 15), or control (C; n = 15). The training protocol consisted of three exercise sessions per week for 12 wk. Blood samples for measuring serum markers (follistatin, myostatin, C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and irisin) were obtained at baseline and 48 h after the final training session. Fat mass (FM), body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and fat-free mass were measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody 720). Results SMM, fat-free mass, UB and LB strength and power, follistatin, follistatin/myostatin ratio, adiponectin, and irisin significantly increased, whereas FM, body fat percentage, myostatin, CRP, and TNF-α significantly reduced from pre- to post-training in all training groups ( P < 0.05). Changes in LB muscle power ( r = 0.558), both UB ( r = 0.518) and LB ( r = 0.419) muscle strength, and follistatin ( r = 0.545) had moderate positive relationships with ΔSMM, whereas changes in myostatin ( r = −0.585) had a moderate negative relationship with ΔSMM. Also, changes in myostatin ( r = 0.825) and CRP ( r = 0.715) had a strong positive relationship with ΔFM, whereas TNF-α ( r = 0.467) had a moderate positive relationship with ΔFM. Follistatin ( r = −0.789) and adiponectin ( r = −0.713) had a strong negative relationship with ΔFM, whereas irisin ( r = −0.426) had a moderate negative relationship with ΔFM. Conclusions Combined RT elicits the greatest increases in follistatin, follistatin/myostatin ratio, and adiponectin, and decreases in myostatin and CRP compared with other training groups in overweight and obese men. However, systemic improvements may be achieved through performing UB or LB RT alone

Does the reading platform matter?

No full text
International audienceMost reading technologies claim to provide experiences similar to reading on print paper. This study compared reading across different digital platforms and print books. Digital reading mediums used in this study were reading on a PC screen, a handheld e-reader and an iPad. A total of eighty participants enrolled in various university courses took part in this experiment. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of the reading conditions, and subsequent eye-tracking measurements were compared. Results indicated that the mean fixation duration was statistically different only for the reading from the PC condition, whereas it was similar across all other conditions. The reading time and the total number of fixations were comparable for the dedicated e-reader, iPad and printed book. This study provides empirical evidence that e-reading tools closely mimic book-reading conditions
