International audienceIn a context of marked climate change, agricultural practices and knowledge in the Pacific are undergoing profound transformations. Increasing climate variability, particularly concerning water resources, presents major challenges for local agri-food systems, raising questions of adaptation, resilience, and knowledge transmission. What strategies are local communities developing to adapt to these environmental changes? What are the current limitations and future challenges for agriculture in the face of these new water-related constraints? To explore these issues, IRD and Météo-France organized a scientific mediation event open to the general public. This event offered a cross-perspective between social sciences and climatology through several key moments:A visual presentation of how New Caledonian children perceive climate change, illustrating intergenerational perspectives on these transformations;A showcase of public speaking performances by young individuals engaged in defending their territories, highlighting the dynamics of social mobilization in response to environmental challenges;A discussion with a panel of researchers in social sciences and climate sciences, sharing their latest findings;A screening of the documentary Paradise in Peril, which examines the understanding of climatic phenomena in New Caledonia and the adaptation of lifestyles in response to these disruptions.
Dark Energy Survey Year 3 Results: Cosmological Constraints from Cluster Abundances, Weak Lensing, and Galaxy Clustering
International audienceGalaxy clusters provide a unique probe of the late-time cosmic structure and serve as a powerful independent test of the CDM model. This work presents the first set of cosmological constraints derived with ~16,000 optically selected redMaPPer clusters across nearly 5,000 using DES Year 3 data sets. Our analysis leverages a consistent modeling framework for galaxy cluster cosmology and DES-Y3 joint analyses of galaxy clustering and weak lensing (3x2pt), ensuring direct comparability with the DES-Y3 3x2pt analysis. We obtain constraints of and from the cluster-based data vector. We find that cluster constraints and 3x2pt constraints are consistent under the CDM model with a Posterior Predictive Distribution (PPD) value of . The consistency between clusters and 3x2pt provides a stringent test of CDM across different mass and spatial scales. Jointly analyzing clusters with 3x2pt further improves cosmological constraints, yielding and , a improvement in the figure-of-merit over 3x2pt alone. Moreover, we find no significant deviation from the Planck CMB constraints with a probability to exceed (PTE) value of , significantly reducing previous tension claims. Finally, combining DES 3x2pt, DES clusters, and Planck CMB places an upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses of \sum m_\nu < 0.26 eV at 95% confidence under the CDM model. These results establish optically selected clusters as a key cosmological probe and pave the way for cluster-based analyses in upcoming Stage-IV surveys such as LSST, Euclid, and Roman
Diagnosing past infections: a review-based, integrated protocol proposal
Diagnosis of ancient infectious diseases has seen remarkable advances, contributing significantly to understanding historical health challenges and shaping medical research. This review explores the evolution of diagnostic methods and features emerging diagnostic techniques. The early detection of ancient infectious diseases primarily relied on observational evidence, skeletal remains, and historical records. Notable outbreaks such as the Black Death in the 14 th century and smallpox epidemics, have left historical imprints. Pioneering diagnostic methods included the paleopathological analysis of the remains of bones and tissue lesions.Later, microbiology methods were adapted to ancient materials, including molecular and serological techniques such as PCR, serology and immunodetection, which were employed to detect DNA or antibodies from ancient pathogens under the name of the paleomicrobiology approach. This emerged as a distinct field, making it possible to isolate and identify ancient pathogens from preserved samples. Advances in next generation sequencing are now revolutionising the diagnosis of ancient diseases, enabling the retrieval of ancient pathogen genomes from well-preserved samples such as dental pulp, tartar, bone and mummified tissues, helping understand disease evolution and transmission patterns. Ongoing improvements in DNA sequencing and metagenomics will enhance the accuracy and scope of the diagnosis of ancient diseases. Collaboration between archaeologists, historians, paleomicrobiologists, geneticists and epidemiologists will drive further breakthroughs. Advances in paleocytology, metagenomic analysis, including non-invasive techniques, such as mass spectrometry, may offer new avenues for identifying ancient pathogens. Current technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration hold promise for uncovering even more insights from the past and potentially informing future disease prevention strategies.</div
National audienceRiverine and coastal sedimentary archives are indicative of environmental change through time and provide clues to understanding environmental adaptation in response to forcing, whether climato-eustatic and/or anthropogenic. They can also be used to elucidate human-environment relationships and socio-environmental co-evolution. This article focuses on the Holocene sedimentary archives of the Seine estuary along the lower valley of the Rivière du Commerce, in the vicinity of Juliobona, the capital of the city of the Caletes. The proximity of the sea and rivers, whether the Seine or the Channel, allowed this Roman city to prosper, articularly through trade. A more detailed comprehension of the sedimentary filling would facilitate the identification of the environmental contexts preceding and contemporaneous with the ancient occupation. The working hypothesis is based on the displacement of the Seine's shoreline over the centuries. In order to study the succession of sedimentary deposits and gain insight into the pace of landscape transformation, a multidisciplinary geoarchaeological approach has been developed. This approach combines geophysical surveys, sediment coring, dating, abiotic sedimentological analysis and biotic palaeoenvironmental analysis. The phasing, constructed on the basis of the initial results, indicates the succession of a marine/coastal environment (upper limit: ca. 2,387 cal. BP), then a brackish environment and finally a freshwater environment (lower limit: ca. 2,064 cal. BP). The data presented here offer a new vision of environmental evolution in the Commerce valley, in the vicinity of the Roman town of Juliobona. They also prompt us to reconsider previous hypotheses which envisaged a later clogging of the valley
How do you pronounce this in a local language? A digital tool for learning and disseminating the pronunciation of local languages
International audienceEncountering written words and names in one of the almost 30 Kanak languages of New Caledonia is very common whether on road signs, in newspapers or in other media. It is challenge to know how to pronounce these words, especially since the grapheme-phoneme (letter-to-sound) correspondences differ – often drastically – from language to language. To help address this challenge, we are developing a web application called LaPasserelle.nc (“the gateway”), which is conceived and designed as a tool to help people in properly pronouncing words en langue (in local language) [Welby et al. 2023].For this talk, we will describe and give a demo of the web application. We will also offer a perspective on the use of semantic web (also called web of data) technologies and concepts, which are useful in terms of interoperability and knowledge dissemination [Tomaszuk and Hyland-Wood 2020].The main aim of this phonetizer is to provide an idea of how to pronounce a word written in Oceanic languages, especially Kanak languages. The user enter text in the input box. This input is processed by using a grapheme – phoneme correspondences, and a pronunciation is displayed as output in either: 1/ the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) or, since IPA is not widely understood, 2/ franétique (> français + phonétique), a pronunciation respelling based on French (the language shared by almost all Caledonians), enhanced with multimodal pedagogical tips. [Kartushina and Martin 2019].The user is “taken by the hand” thanks to a clear association between input and output. Each grapheme is visually connected to its pronunciation. When a phoneme is not used in the output language, a multimodal pedagogical tip explains how to use mouth and tong to properly pronounce what is written.Work is in progress to reference the grapheme-phoneme associations into a database designed with these modeled associations, which can be queried using standardized languages dedicated to the semantic web. An application programming interface (API) is under construction and can be interrogated by the web application as well as by other machines wishing to feed on or use the modeled knowledge for other purposes. The phonetization is based on the proposed writing systems of the Académie des Langues Kanak [ALK 2013, Sam 2009], as well as current research. A beta version of the phonetizer handles the Drehu and Paicî languages, and we plan to extend it to other languages spoken in New Caledonia, if the different communities so desire, including other Kanak languages, but also possibly Polynesian languages such as Wallisian, and Tahitian. The web of data database will be an asset for the dissemination and re-use of the knowledge acquired as a part of this project. For a neighboring Pacific country, Papua New Guinea, Kik et al. (2021) report that “ethnobiological knowledge is closely correlated with indigenous language skills” and that both are “declin[ing] precipitously” [Kik et al. 2021]. With that in mind, and fully aware that correlation does not imply causation, a broader goal of the LaPasserelle.nc project is to support and promote linguistic diversity in New Caledonia, by supporting language learning and the preservation and transmission of cultural knowledge more generally.Key words (max 5): phonetization, under-resourced languages, Kanak languages, New Caledonia, Oceania ReferencesAcadémie des Langues Kanak, “Propositions d’écriture du paicî”, 2013. EP240801a/XRF 240801B: An X-ray Flash Detected by the Einstein Probe and Implications of its Multiband Afterglow
International audienceWe present multiband observations and analysis of EP240801a, a low-energy, extremely soft gamma-ray burst (GRB) discovered on August 1, 2024 by the Einstein Probe (EP) satellite, with a weak contemporaneous signal also detected by Fermi/GBM. Optical spectroscopy of the afterglow, obtained by GTC and Keck, identified the redshift of . EP240801a exhibits a burst duration of 148 s in X-rays and 22.3 s in gamma-rays, with X-rays leading by 80.61 s. Spectral lag analysis indicates the gamma-ray signal arrived 8.3 s earlier than the X-rays. Joint spectral fitting of EP/WXT and Fermi/GBM data yields an isotropic energy , a peak energy , a fluence ratio , classifying EP240801a as an X-ray flash (XRF). The host-galaxy continuum spectrum, inferred using Prospector, was used to correct its contribution for the observed outburst optical data. Unusual early -band behavior and EP/FXT observations suggest multiple components in the afterglow. Three models are considered: two-component jet model, forward-reverse shock model and forward-shock model with energy injection. Both three provide reasonable explanations. The two-component jet model and the energy injection model imply a relatively small initial energy and velocity of the jet in the line of sight, while the forward-reverse shock model remains typical. Under the two-component jet model, EP240801a may resemble GRB 221009A (BOAT) if the bright narrow beam is viewed on-axis. Therefore, EP240801a can be interpreted as an off-beam (narrow) jet or an intrinsically weak GRB jet. Our findings provide crucial clues for uncovering the origin of XRFs
