The bright and dark sides of openness on quality of life: the role of emotions and self-efficacy beliefs within a GAMs, a network approach and mediation
International audienceBackground: Although the relationship between personality and quality of life has been extensively studied, openness has received relatively little attention. This is despite its importance in the Big Five model and its ability to change over time. To close this gap, our study explored the link between openness and quality of life. Additionally, we examined whether this relationship is influenced by Dimensions of Openness to Emotion (DOE) and self-efficacy, as research suggests both may play significant roles in the personality-quality of life relationship.Method : A total of 419 participants in a community-based convenience sample of the French-speaking regions of Switzerland and of France aged 20-66 years completed the NEO-FFI-R inventory, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Dimensions of Openness to Emotion scale, and the WHOQOL-12 measuring quality of life. GAMs, Network and Mediation analysis were conducted with R software. Results: Our analysis suggested that the different facets of DOE relate to quality of life in two contrasting ways, with openness influencing it both positively and negatively, depending on the specific facet: the somatic dimensions of DOE had a negative association, while the cognitive dimensions of DOE had a positive one. Conclusions: Openness contributes to quality of life, especially for individuals who are moderately open to their bodily sensations and who use thoughtful and context-adjusted emotion regulation strategies

Covariant cosmography in the presence of local structures: comparing exact solutions and perturbation theory
International audienceRecent observational evidence of axially symmetric anisotropies in the local cosmic expansion rate motivates an investigation of whether they can be accounted for within the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) framework with an off-center observer. Within this setting, we compute the exact relativistic luminosity distance via the Sachs equation and compare it with the approximate expression obtained from the covariant cosmographic approach (including Hubble, deceleration, jerk and curvature parameters). This comparison allows us to identify the regimes in which the covariant cosmographic method remains reliable. In addition, we compare the LTB relativistic distance for small inhomogeneities with the corresponding result derived from linear perturbation theory (LPT) in the standard cosmological model. This analysis establishes a precise correspondence between the LTB and LPT approaches, offering a consistent dictionary for the interpretation of the observed anisotropies of the large-scale gravitational field. This analysis will be instrumental in interpreting expansion-rate anisotropies, facilitating investigations of the local Universe beyond the FLRW framework with a fully non-perturbative metric approach
GWTC-4.0: An Introduction to Version 4.0 of the Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog
International audienceThe Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC) is a collection of short-duration (transient) gravitational wave signals identified by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration in gravitational-wave data produced by the eponymous detectors. The catalog provides information about the identified candidates, such as the arrival time and amplitude of the signal and properties of the signal's source as inferred from the observational data. GWTC is the data release of this dataset and version 4.0 extends the catalog to include observations made during the first part of the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run up until 2024 January 31. This paper marks an introduction to a collection of articles related to this version of the catalog, GWTC-4.0. The collection of articles accompanying the catalog provides documentation of the methods used to analyze the data, summaries of the catalog of events, observational measurements drawn from the population, and detailed discussions of selected candidate
Analyse d'une alerte massive arrivée tardivement lors des inondations du 29 octobre à Valence (Espagne)
International audienceFloods that hit the Valencia region (Spain) on 29 October 2024 took a heavy toll in terms of human lives (229 deaths) and material damage (€22 billion euros). Accumulation and intensity of rains explain the magnitude and severity of hydrological reactions. But the delay in issuing the official public alert therefore raises questions: the first message was broadcast at 8:11pm on the 29th October, while a red warning for heavy rainfall was issued at 7:36 in the morning. To determine if the alert could have been activated earlier in the day, this article replaces the chronology of events established on the basis of various scientific data (the times at which meteorological warnings were issued, rainfall intensities, flow rates measured at certain stations, reports of emergency calls). The temporality of the actions taken by various players (at both local and national level) and the content of alert messages were also studied. The cross-referencing of the data confirms that the alert could have been activated three hours earlier, as several indicators reached between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. show that the danger was already in progress. Finally, the field experiment carried out on this dramatic event support new results with a scientific and operational point of view.Las inundaciones del 29 de octubre de 2024 en la provincia de Valencia (España) causaron importantes pérdidas humanas (229 muertos) así como materiales (22.000 millones de euros). Si bien la intensidad de las precipitaciones permite entender la extensión y la gravedad de la respuesta hidrológica, muchos han puesto en tela de juicio la tardanza de la alerta a la población: el primer mensaje, enviado mediante el sistema ES-Alert, llegó a las 20:11, mientras un aviso rojo había sido emitido a las 7:36 de la mañana. Con el fin de determinar si la alerta podría haberse activado antes, este artículo propone una cronología de los acontecimientos establecida a partir de varios datos científicos (las horas en que se emitieron los avisos meteorológicos, las intensidades de precipitaciones, los caudales medidos, el listado de llamadas de emergencia), estudiando también la cronología de las acciones emprendidas por diversos actores (tanto al nivel local como nacional) el uso del sistema ES-Alert y el contenido de los mensajes. El cruce de datos confirma que la alerta podría haberse activado tres horas antes, ya que varios indicadores alcanzados entre las 17:00 y las 18:00 muestran que el peligro ya estaba avanzado. Finalmente, este trabajo aporta nuevos conocimientos, tanto al nivel operativo (para evitar alertas tardías) como científico (para reflexionar sobre estrategias de alerta diferenciadas o adaptables en el tiempo y en el espacio).Les inondations survenues le 29 octobre 2024 au sud de Valence (Espagne) ont entraîné un lourd bilan humain (229 personnes décédées) et matériel (22 milliards d’euros de dégâts). Les intensités des pluies ont entraîné des réactions hydrologiques brutales et violentes. Mais de nombreux acteurs ont toutefois remis en cause l’arrivée tardive de l’alerte à la population : la première alerte a été diffusée sur les téléphones portables à 20h11, alors que les inondations avaient débuté depuis plusieurs heures. Afin de comprendre les raisons du retard de l’alerte, cet article propose de replacer la chronologie des faits établis à partir de différentes données : les horaires des vigilances météorologiques, les intensités des pluies, les débits mesurés à certaines stations et les appels vers les centres de secours. La manière dont le dispositif ES-Alert a été considéré et le contenu des messages d’alerte ont aussi été étudiés. Les résultats confirment que l’alerte aurait dû être activée plus tôt afin de réduire le nombre de victimes. Ce retour d’expérience est par ailleurs riche d’enseignements sur le plan opérationnel (pour éviter d’alerter tardivement face à de futures inondations) et sur le volet scientifique (pour réfléchir à des stratégies d’alerte plus adaptées à la dynamique spatio-temporelle des inondations)

Pseudomonas syringae subpopulations cooperate by coordinating flagellar and type III secretion spatiotemporal dynamics to facilitate plant infection
International audienceIsogenic bacterial populations can display probabilistic cell-to-cell variation in response to challenges. This phenotypic heterogeneity can affect virulence in animals, but its impact on plant pathogens is unknown. Previously, we showed that expression of the type III secretion system (T3SS) of the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae displays phenotypic variation in planta. Here we use flow cytometry and microscopy to investigate single-cell flagellar expression in relation to T3SS expression, showing that both systems undergo phenotypic heterogeneity in vitro in apoplast-mimicking medium and within apoplastic microcolonies throughout colonization of Phaseolus vulgaris. Stochastic, spatial and time factors shape the dynamics of a phenotypically diverse pathogen population that displays division of labour during colonization: effectors produced by T3SS-expressing bacteria act as ‘common goods’ to suppress immunity, allowing motile flagella-expressing bacteria to increase and leave infected tissue before necrosis. These results showcase the mechanisms of bacterial specialization during plant colonization in an environmentally and agriculturally relevant system
