Encountering Parents Who Are Hesitant or Reluctant to Vaccinate Their Children: A Meta-Ethnography.

    Get PDF
    (1) Background: Health professionals play an important role in addressing parents who are hesitant or reluctant to immunise their children. Despite the importance of this topic, gaps remain in the literature about these experiences. This meta-ethnography aimed to synthesise the available body of qualitative work about the care experiences of community and hospital health professionals in encounters with parents hesitant or reluctant to vaccinate their children. The aim is to provide key information for the creation of strategies that address vaccine hesitancy or refusal and ensure public trust in vaccination programs, which are required in a pandemic context such as the current one. (2) Methods: Noblit and Hare's interpretive meta-ethnography of 12 studies was followed. A line of argument synthesis based on a metaphor was developed. (3) Results: The metaphor "The stone that refuses to be sculpted", accompanied by three themes, symbolises the care experiences of health professionals in their encounters with parents that hesitate or refuse to vaccinate their children. (4) Conclusions: The creation of clearer communication strategies, the establishment of a therapeutic alliance, health literacy and the empowerment of parents are recommended. The incorporation of health professionals in decision making and the strengthening of multidisciplinary teams interacting with such parents are also included

Vivencias y percepción de los profesionales sanitarios de las urgencias extrahospitalarias ante las agresiones

OBJECTIVE: To know the opinions of the health professionals who work at the Ourense Continuous Care Point (PAC) regarding work aggressions. DESIGN: Qualitative study with phenomenological approach carried out between January and May 2019. SETTING: PAC. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty professionals of different categories. METHOD: Structural sampling. Open interviews recorded in audio were used, with the prior consent of the participants. RESULTS: The interviewed professionals state that they have been victims of aggressions, especially verbal ones. These aggressions according to the participants are so common that they have normalized them within their working day. None has ever denounced this type of behavior, largely because they consider that the bureaucracy and administrative procedures are tedious, and others due to ignorance of the procedure. These types of situations, at work level, cause them feelings of sadness, anger and helplessness and are the cause according to them, of the increase in defensive medicine. Professionals believe that the cause of the increase in aggressions among the group is due to poor education and inadequate management of patient empowerment. CONCLUSIONS: Health professionals continually suffer aggressions, especially verbal, being common in their day to day. These attacks are not reported, but they cause multiple negative and disruptive feelings, changing their way of working

Proteomics as a Complementary Technique to Characterize Bladder Cancer

    No full text
Bladder cancer (BC) is the most common tumor of the urinary tract and is conventionally classified as either non-muscle invasive or muscle invasive. In addition, histological variants exist, as organized by the WHO-2016 classification. However, innovations in next-generation sequencing have led to molecular classifications of BC. These innovations have also allowed for the tracing of major tumorigenic pathways and, therefore, are positioned as strong supporters of precision medicine. In parallel, immunohistochemistry is still the clinical reference to discriminate histological layers and to stage BC. Key contributions have been made to enlarge the panel of protein immunomarkers. Moreover, the analysis of proteins in liquid biopsy has also provided potential markers. Notwithstanding, their clinical adoption is still low, with very few approved tests. In this context, mass spectrometry-based proteomics has remained a step behind; hence, we aimed to develop them in the community. Herein, the authors introduce the epidemiology and the conventional classifications to review the molecular classification of BC, highlighting the contributions of proteomics. Then, the advances in mass spectrometry techniques focusing on maintaining the integrity of the biological structures are presented, a milestone for the emergence of histoproteomics. Within this field, the review then discusses selected proteins for the comprehension of the pathophysiological mechanisms of BC. Finally, because there is still insufficient knowledge, this review considers proteomics as an important source for the development of BC therapies
