    No full text

    No full text
Living species interact with each other within food webs. A large number of parasites are transmitted within these food webs between their hosts, following an act of predation. Understanding the transmission dynamics of these parasites therefore requires us to take into account the complexity of the trophic links between the different hosts, their population dynamics and their degree of competence in transmitting the pathogen in question.Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) is a cestode parasite responsible for human alveolar echinococcosis, an emerging zoonosis. This parasite completes its life cycle between intermediate hosts (mainly rodents) and definitive hosts (wild and domestic carnivores), passing from the former to the latter via predation.A previous eco-epidemiological model had made it possible to take into account a multiplicity of intermediate hosts and the effect of this biodiversity on the transmission of a trophically transmitted parasite. In particular, the plasticity of the feeding behaviour of predators when faced with several prey species was incorporated. My thesis, at the interface between ecology and mathematics, continued this work by improving the generalisability and universality of the models developed. The prey-predator model proposed in this manuscript extends the existing models to the case where two predators and final hosts are competing for several prey items. An intraguild predation relationship between the predators has been included in the equations. On this basis, an eco-epidemiological model with two predators and two prey was also developed. Analysis of this model has enabled a basic reproduction number to be calculated, capable of measuring the epidemic potential of the system. Using this tool, it has been possible to assess the effect of predator biodiversity on the transmission of a trophically-transmitted parasite.Prey-predator dynamics and parasite transmission dynamics were first studied theoretically. The models were then applied to the food web supporting the transmission of Em in North America. This includes two predators, the red fox and the coyote, linked by asymmetrical intraguild predation, and two prey, the deer mouse and the meadow vole. In particular, the effect of the coyote as a new definitive host entering the transmission cycle of Em is examined.Increasing the number of predators can amplify or dilute the transmission of the parasite, depending on the importance of alternative resources, the effect on the whole trophic chain and the relative competences of the species in transmitting the parasite.

Sub-micron elastic properties measurement of single laser-affected volume in fused silica

International audienceNon-ablative femtosecond laser exposure of transparent substrates leads to bulk volumetric changes, and consequently, localized structural changes resulting in micron-scale variation of elastic properties in the material. Here, we demonstrate the use of grid nano-indentation to characterize the elastic stiffness field across the laser-modified volume. Sub-micron spatial resolution is achieved by adapting a deconvolution procedure to the laser-affected zone (LAZ) geometry that minimizes a projection residual out of which an elastic description of the modified glass is sequentially constructed. Thanks to this method, a bimodal stiffness-distribution across the laser-affected zones is revealed, highlighting the complex nature of the interaction

Control of oxygen excess ratio in PEM fuel cell using parallel distributed compensation controller with fuzzy observer

    No full text
International audienceProton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are among the current technologies used in stationary applications and in the drivetrains of electric vehicles. For these various applications, PEMFC is utilized as a renewable source of electrical power. However, optimizing this system is necessary to increase energy conversion efficiency and ensure good energy efficiency. Controlling the oxygen excess ratio by regulating the airflow into the system is one of the proposed control solutions to maximize net power output. The objective of this paper is to design a nonlinear controller for a PEMFC based on a fuzzy observer to regulate the oxygen excess ratio. The fuzzy observer design is based on the Takagi–Sugeno model of the system, allowing for the estimation of the cathode pressure and the pressure in the supply manifold. These estimates are then used to determine the oxygen excess ratio and develop a controller aimed at maintaining this parameter at a desired value. The controller design is based on the PDC (Parallel Distributed Compensation) control law, with gains synthesized by solving Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions to ensure system stabilization according to the Lyapunov theorem. The proposed controller demonstrates superior performance in terms of set-point tracking and disturbance rejection, as shown by the simulation results, achieving high precision in both dynamic and static conditions, while reducing the overshoot of the regulated parameter in response to load variations
