The railway power transformers used for powering trains are subject to significant and irregular load demands (current spikes when the train passes). Located along the tracks, they impose constraints in terms of electrical stress and therefore use frequency. This results in heating due to the Joule effect, leading to accelerated aging and a potential fire hazard. This study focuses on the 2D thermal nodal modeling of transformers immersed in natural oil, with the aim of achieving optimal design in terms of longevity and cost
Phytochemical analysis and bioactivities of Rhizophora mucronata Lam. from Djibouti: in vitro and in silico approaches
International audienceThis study investigates the phytochemical composition and biological activities of crude extracts from rhizophora mucronata Lam. collected in the Republic of Djibouti. Ethanolic extracts from leaves, stems, and flowers were analyzed, revealing high yields extractsusing 90% ethanol extraction. Flavonoid quantification showed the highest content in leaves (0.144 µg QE/mg extract), followed by flowers (0.059 µg QE/mg), and stems (0.041 µg QE/mg). HPLC-MS/MS analysis identified six major phytochemicals, including utin (C1), kaempferol derivatives (C2), flavone (C3), quinic acid (C4), 3-(benzoyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl alpha-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid (C5), and naringin (C6). The flower extract exhibited the strongest antibacterial effect, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 640 µg/mL), whereas leave and stem extracts showed weaker activity (MIC > 2560 µg/mL for most Gram-negative bacteria). Antioxidant potential was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays, with flower extracts demonstrating the highest radical-scavenging activity (IC50 = 159 µg/mL for DPPH and 137.5 µg/mL for ABTS). Furthermore, Molecular docking studies revealed strong binding interactions between naringin and key S. aureus proteins (binding energy -10.2 kcal/mol for 2W9G) and with the antioxidant enzyme catalase (2CAG, -11.1 kcal/mol), supporting its potential pharmacological relevance. ADMET analysis showed good solubility for all compounds, with C3 and C4 exhibiting the best bioavailability. Naringin displayed moderate toxicity (LD50 = 2300 mg/kg). These findings suggest that Rhizophora mucronata extracts, particularly from flowers, could serve as promising natural sources of antibacterial and antioxidant agents

International audienceSociety still overuses polymers without fully considering their environmental impact. However, attention is increasingly shifting towards biocomposites, which already have practical applications in various fields. Despite progress, finding alternatives for complex, precise parts remain challenging. This is why we are focusing on hybrid manufacturing, which combines the benefits of 3D printing and machining. 3D printing allows us to produce parts with complex geometries, while machining ensures the precision required to meet the highest technical standards. However, this combination of processes can present challenges. Lubricants cannot be used in cutting to prevent affecting the printed layers and hydrophilic fibers. Without lubrication, localized heating occurs during machining, and since polymers are thermally insulating, this can cause material melting, degrading the surface and quality of the part. Therefore, it is essential to first study the dry machinability of these materials to prevent such issues. This study is part of a broader approach aimed at exploring the combination of Pellets Additive Manufacturing (PAM) and milling, particularly on a biocomposite composed of 80% PLA and 20% hemp fibers. However, this aspect is not directly addressed here. Instead, this paper focuses on understanding the cutting behavior of PLA, both pure and reinforced, by analyzing the influence of cutting parameters through turning operations on injection-molded parts. The objective is to assess their impact on surface integrity and cutting forces. This approach facilitates the study of fundamental cutting parameters. Optimal cutting parameters for these materials are identified by analyzing cutting forces and assessing surface quality
International audienceThe social digital platform TikTok has developed hypermedia tools integrated into the platform that play a key role in the creative participation of audiences. These technologies are profoundly reconfiguring the logic of creation and circulation of digital discourses. In this context, music is acquiring a new function: it is integrated into different variation processes and thus constitutes the main ingredient of musical memes. This article aims to analyze the technological affordances of TikTok facilitating these processes of reappropriation by questioning the logic of the digital “commons” oscillating between collective creation, standardization of expression, and injunction to virality.
A methodology to manage the complexity of a nonlinear multibody digital twin in railway applications
International audienceIn the railway industry, digital twins based on nonlinear multibody simulations are developed to provide decision-making support for bogie design. A recurring challenge in the use of numerical simulations is to find an acceptable compromise between the complexity of the models for the different components – in terms of their capacity to adequately reflect specific physical effects – and the associated computational burden, so as to ensure a sufficiently accurate representation of the global dynamic behavior a train. This requires an investigation into the extent to which, for instance, the stiffness and damping characteristics of a component depend on parameters such as the displacement amplitude, the frequency or the load direction. Intensive experimental studies are one strategy for increasing the knowledge of components, but they are costly to implement or incomplete when parametric dependencies are not explored. It is then necessary to determine which factors need to be controlled for each component, and to what extent, in order to prioritize them. In this context, the objective of the proposed
work is to investigate different modelling strategies integrating the complexity of a physical model in different ways, and to discriminate between the effectiveness of these strategies in faithfully reproducing the dynamic responses of a structure. Two approaches are investigated in particular to study a real yaw damper component of a motor bogie. Firstly, a rheological model representing the dynamic behavior of the damper is proposed, and the parameters of this model are identified on the basis of characterization tests. This physics-based model is integrated into dynamic simulations for sensitivity studies in order to identify the influential elements that need to be controlled to validate the dynamic model. A simulation-based sensitivity indicator is developed as a tool to implement the necessary complexity for each component and to optimize the design of the required experimental studies and the methodology is illustrated for the yaw damper component mounted on a locomotive’s motor bogie. In a second phase, an alternative model based on a multi-layer perceptron neural network is proposed to
improve the computational efficiency of the digital twin
