Challenges and Opportunities in Collecting Individual Data for the International Database on Longevity (IDL)

    No full text
The International Database on Longevity (IDL) is a collaborative project supported by an international network of researchers, and managed by the DataLab at the French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED). IDL compiles thoroughly validated data on deceased semi-supercentenarians (at age 105-109 years old) and supercentenarians (over 110 years old) currently in thirteen countries. It is designed to study the limits of longevity and the mortality hazard at the oldest ages. Over time, the IDL has encountered a notable reduction in the number of countries willing to provide their data, which is primarily attributed to certain countries' reluctance to disclose individual records due to legal protections and privacy concerns. In Europe, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has harmonized the legal framework about the treatment and dissemination of personal data. However, it does not apply to data on deceased individuals, which remain subject to national regulations. To address this issue, we propose to provide access to aggregated data rather than individual data when a country is reluctant to provide individual records. We expect that this will encourage more countries to contribute to the IDL database. The paper describes the aggregation method that we want to implement. It consists in aggregating individual data at the level of the Lexis triangles. This approach allows both period and cohort analyses, thus ensuring that through IDL data it will continue to be possible to perform high quality data analyses aimed at studying longevity

An innovative visual approach to the simultaneous study of two dimensions of progress in longevity: an application to French and German regions

    No full text
Background Both enhancing life expectancy and decreasing inequalities in lifespan between social groups are significant goals for public policy. To date, however, methodological tools to study progress in both dimensions simultaneously have been lacking. There is also a consensus that absolute and relative inequalities in lifespan must be studied together. Methods We introduce a novel graphical representation that combines national mortality rates with both absolute and relative measures of social inequality in mortality. To illustrate our approach, we analyze French and German data stratified by place of residence. Results For all-age mortality, in France we find a steady pace of decline in both mortality and in regional inequalities in mortality over recent decades. In Germany, substantial progress was made in the 1990s, mostly driven by convergence between eastern and western Germany, followed by a period of slower progress. Age-specific analyses for Germany reveal a worrying divergence in regional trends at ages 35–74 in recent years, which is particularly pronounced among women. Conclusion Our novel visual approach offers a way to simultaneously examine two dimensions of progress in longevity, and facilitates meaningful comparisons between populations, even when their current mortality rates differ. The applied methods can be easily reproduced in any country for which long-term mortality series stratified by region, or any relevant socioeconomic characteristic, are available. It is useful for both scientific analysis and policy advice

Twenty years of PACS: The specificities of the French civil union

    No full text
The French Civil Solidarity Pact was created in 1999 in response to the demand for legal recognition of same-sex couples. Unlike many European laws with the same objective, the PACS was from the outset aimed at heterosexual couples as well. Little used by the latter in its first years of existence, the PACS then experienced a considerable increase in numbers. In 2019, there were more than nine PACS for every ten marriages. After presenting the legal characteristics of the PACS, this chapter will outline the main statistical trends in PACS (and marriage) since 1999. Data from annual census surveys and sociological surveys on conjugal trajectories will then be used to show how the PACS, which has few equivalents in other countries, has found its place alongside de facto unions and marriage

    No full text

Case studies on obstetric violence: experience, analysis, and responses

    No full text
The four Case Studies on the issue of obstetric violence in this volume were prepared to inform the development of a wider study on the topic, ‘Obstetric violence in the European Union: Situational analysis and policy recommendations’ by Patrizia Quattrocchi. This wider study was developed under the aegis of the SAAGE network, which draws together experts in gender equality to inform and support European Union level policy initiatives by providing expertise and knowledge on both relevant wide-ranging political issues and technical issues. The SAAGE network is coordinated by Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini S.r.l. SB (FGB SRL SB), an Italian independent research centre. The general objective of the wider study is to inform the European Commission on the issue of obstetric violence in the European Union Member States and to contribute to the better understanding of this phenomenon and of current responses to the issue. It was undertaken in a context of growing public awareness of and concern about the issue, an established imperative for quality care at childbirth, and an understanding of obstetric violence as a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence and of institutional violence. Obstetrics is the medical discipline that deals with pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period. Obstetric violence has emerged as a concern in policy, research and debate. The Council of Europe has defined it in terms of: inappropriate or non-consensual acts, such as episiotomies and vaginal palpation carried out without consent, fundal pressure or painful interventions without anaesthetic and of sexist behaviour in the course of medical consultations

    No full text

    No full text

Intergenerational income mobility in France: A comparative and geographic analysis

    No full text
The question of the extent to which individuals' incomes are related to those of their parents has seen renewed interest as rising income inequality raises concerns about equality of opportunity. This column provides new estimates of intergenerational income mobility for almost 65,000 children born on mainland France between 1972 and 1981. There are strong differences in economic trajectories between children from families at the bottom and at the top of the income distribution. This intergenerational persistence is slightly lower than in the US, close to that observed in Italy, and higher than in many OECD countries, such as Scandinavian countries and Australia

    No full text
