    Poster Presenter: Gaurav Aryal Research Team: Gaurav Aryal, Troy Hill, Stephen Osafo-Gyamfi, Amir Mehrara Molan, and Anurag Pande Abstract: RCUTs, also known as RCIs, superstreets, or Jturns, are a popular alternative intersection design. RCUTs redirect left-turn and through movements from the minor road into right turns, followed by downstream U-turns to complete the maneuver. There are more than 500 RCUTs in the United States, with safety performance varying across states. Previous studies have reported crash reductions ranging from 20% to 70%. In Mississippi, 16 unsignalized RCUTs were constructed between 2012 and 2021, primarily on high-speed multilane highways. This research evaluates their safety performance using an Empirical Bayes (EB) before-and-after approach.

Khan, Ikhlas Khan Abstract: Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a Southeast Asian plant traditionally used for pain, mood disorders, and opioid withdrawal. Its leaves, consumed as tea, capsules, or chewed, contain psychoactive alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine which act on opioid and other neurotransmitter receptors. Due to oral intake, liver exposure is high, and metabolism occurs via Phase I/II pathways. Reported liver injury includes cholestasis and mixed patterns. Last 20 years the uses of kratom is expanding in United States (US) and now estimated 1.9 million (0.7%) US citizen use kratom. Kratom is banned in several U.S. states due to safety concerns

    Trajectories of control: Exposure to punitive social control over time and its associated consequences

    Poster Presenter: Abigail Novak The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of punitive social control in childhood and adolescence, as well as risk factors and outcomes associated with these different patterns of control. Black children, male children, children with more ACEs, and children from lower income households were more likely to experience persistent or increasing exposure to punitive social control throughout childhood and adolescence. Findings indicated punishment may compound as a child ages, growing from exposure to punitive control to more progressively severe experiences of control, ultimately leading to direct experiences with probation and/or incarceration. These findings also reflect broader notions of systemic violence and persistent social control, suggesting governmental systems broadly regulate and punish some individuals persistently and over time, using various methods of punitive surveillance to exert control

    Poster Presenter: Anita Shrestha Research Team: Anita Shrestha and Sarah Liljegren Abstract: Organ boundaries play crucial roles in coordinating the growth and development of plant organs. Within the developing gynoecium, an organ boundary known as the carpel margin meristem gives rise to a set of reproductive tissues that include the ovules, septum, transmitting tract, style and stigma. Previous studies have shown that disruption of organ boundary gene function is associated with female sterility. For instance, loss of the redundant CUC1 and CUC2 NAC transcription factors prevents septum fusion and interferes with ovule development. Our previous studies of the STM and ATH1 homeodomain transcription factors have shown that majority of the stm ath1 double mutant flowers lack gynoecia, which suggests that STM and ATH1 have potential roles in reproductive development. Our further studies revealed that STM and ATH1 act redundantly during the development of reproductive tissues like septum and ovules, and also play roles in ovule fertilization. In future, we aim investigate the correlation between reduced seed set with respect to septum and ovule development defects in the mutants

The Clinic for Outreach and Personal Enrichment (COPE) and the Growing Healthy Minds, Bodies, and Communities (GHMBC) initiative, both housed in the School of Education, will be expanding their reach across the state with free online counseling services for youth and an evidence-based preschool curriculum for teachers.
