The surge of newly developed gated communities (GC’s)/ neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the Greater Cairo Region has triggered research to understand the unprecedented phenomenon in Egypt in the late 1990’s. This paper investigates images of a sustainable lifestyle from the perspective of the residents of two communities; Al-Rehab and Madinaty. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are followed to explore and document residents’ perception of a sustainable lifestyle promised in these two-gated communities. Indepth interviews and a survey were conducted to assess reasons behind the move to these new communities that were a new trend in urban development in Egypt in the 90’s. Thematic and statistical analysis shows poetic images of soft sustainability that contradict to what a real future might be

ADHERENCE OF LEBANESE ADOLESCENT STUDENTS TO THECOPERNICAN THEORY OF MEDIOCRITY REGARDINGANTHROPOMETRY, ACTIVITY, AND SOCIAL PARTICIPATION

    Get PDF
Governance entities that have tackled public participation for decades are now approaching more participatory democracies, throughout which citizens are directly involved in influencing decisions that matter to them. In Lebanon, young people’s disengagement from the sociopolitical realm demands a framework for youth dialogue on policy matters. In 2017, the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development designed, initiated and managed a youth-centered public participation approach in Saida, Lebanon, engaging young citizens in local research and development and empowering them to multiply their influences at the regional and national scales. This approach has been recognized on all levels as an effective methodology for urban youth participation and has been given attention for replication among other urban contexts. This paper takes an in-depth look into the literature of public participation. Onward, it outlines the theoretical and practical keystones of Saida’s case study, breaking it down into its chronological milestones and classifying tangible results into strategies. Intersections are derived to associate the local process with the five components of the Public Participation Spectrum, an existing contextrelevant scientific model. Finally, lessons learnt are developed from empirically-based practice as reference measures for mainstreaming youth-centered public participation elsewhere. The author argues that effective and sustainable youth engagement methods must be adaptive to the responsiveness of the youth engaged and the governance systems and communities for which they are designed

With the growing recognition of major environmental trends, marketers are reorganizing or regenerating their strategies and practices to meet the new challenges. The intent of this paper is to highlight new marketing strategic thinking, to accommodate for creative sustainable development. It introduces the importance of environment and sustainable development to the world around us. It defines a critical environmental problem and tries to find solutions from a marketing discipline. It tackles on latest marketing terminologies, such as consumerism, green marketing, ethical consumption, ecological concerns and green innovation and promotion. This paper reviews and analyzes three environmental trends, to determine their effects on marketing strategies interventions toward providing solutions to environmental problems opposing our globe today. The paper indicates that businesses can change and alter marketing strategies to protect the environment and consequently achieve creative sustainable development. We also note the essential role of learning organizations in the twenty first century. Successful strategies in prospect will need to be receptive and adaptive rather than permanent and rigid to accommodate the fact that customers are more market literate. Close to the end of the paper is a reflection of misusage of some companies with respect to corporate social responsibility, thus misleading the society by taking green marketing as propaganda for their advertizing and using marketing strategies to differentiate themselves rather than save the planet

ODOR POLLUTION ASSESSMENT IN RESIDENTIAL URBAN SPACES IN TRIPOLI CITY

    Get PDF
The odor pollution is a real problem that could threat a city and influence negatively the health of people. The odor is formed from invincible substances and several previous researches in both fields of chemical and meteorological specialization have created visualization maps for odor as an intending to locate the odor source, substances, and affected areas. This research aims to benefit from previous studies in the architectural field in providing a visualization for the odor in the city especially in the residential areas. The objective of the research is to create an assessment of the odor sources and affected residential areas in three different settings in Tripoli city, as a smellscape with considering one environmental factor that is the wind as an influencing element in the dispersion of odor in the city. The study depends on ArcGIS map to set the odor different location sources, and the affected residential areas by these sources in Tripoli city. The study of wind is conducted based on the GFS model (Global Forecast System) to find out the changed wind direction and speed between 21st to 31st of May in Tripoli city. The data collected is visualized as first in pivot tables for each wind speed category, these tables help to find out the role of wind in the dispersion of odor in each of the selected residential areas. The results show that visualizing the data in pivot tables helps in conducting the influence of wind in spreading the odor in the selected residential areas in Tripoli city. The outcome of this study is to benefit from the wind study to define one of the factors that influence the odor dispersion in each of the selected areas and according to the different odor sources that help in assessing the odor pollution in each area

PROBLEMS OF DESIGN JURIES IN SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE

    Get PDF
Throughout the last few decades, the architectural design education has passed many phases of critique and evaluation development. The process of critique continues in the different stages of design, starting from choosing the site, until the final submission. The jury committees are often held at the final stage in order to evaluate the architectural product. Although there are specific methods to systemize the process of evaluation, but unfortunately some academic members in jury committees do not apply these methods, which results in negative judgments on student’s project, and that could generate a feeling of dissatisfaction. This paper, therefore, aims to reach the maximum fairness in evaluation process through following a clear and discipline criteria. Two case studies will be examined in the juries of graduation project in two different schools of architecture; one in Lebanon and the other one in Egypt. Through analyzing the methods of evaluating projects in both case studies, the paper can reach the required ideal criteria that can be followed later on

PARALLEL LEARNING METHODS: STANDARD CURRICULUM VERSUS INTENSIVE COURSES

    Get PDF
Due to the rapid change in technology and emergence of new theories and their professional applications, there is a rise in demand for relying more on compact and intensive courses with shorter durations and more direct applications, rather than the traditional courses with their long periods of time, which might vary from 14 to 16 weeks of study. Although they are already in existence, this paper aims to demonstrate the need to use more compact courses within the architecture curriculum, particularly simulating tools that either measure the current performance of a design or forecast its degree of success in order to cope with environmental needs (indoor and outdoor), accessibility, visual needs, technological variations and other related issues. The paper investigates the end users’ (students and instructors) point of view, by using a questionnaire as a tool. Furthermore, the paper investigates the results of the compact courses on the students’ performance in their design projects
