    Get PDF
This study is divided into two sections: the first section aims to extrapolate the reality of the situation in the Lebanese society during the beginning of 2021 with regard to psychological stress and death anxiety following the Beirut Port Blast and during the Corona crisis and the beginning of the economic downturn in Lebanon; the second section aims to study the correlation among the components of well-being and religiosity, and the relationship between death anxiety and psychological stress with well-being and religiosity. It also aims to reveal the possibility of predicting well-being through psychological stress and death anxiety. In addition, the study aims to explore the factorial analysis of the components of scales in both sexes. The sample included 2290 people from various Lebanese governorates. Templer’s Death Anxiety scale, Cohen’s perceived stress scale, and Abdel-Khaleq self-rating scales of well-being and religiosity were utilized. One of the findings of the study is the emergence of the well-being factor, which consists of: religiosity, mental health, physical health, happiness, and life satisfaction. No differences between the sexes were depicted in this factor. It was also found that the relationship between well-being and religiosity, on one hand, and psychological stress and death anxiety, on the other hand, is an inverse relationship; no differences between males and females were depicted in this regard. Stress and death anxiety were inferred to be predictors of well- being though through different coeficients. Results also revealed differences in the principal components of factors in both sexes; the items loaded on four factors in females, one of which was bipolar, indicating the negative impact of psychological stress on females’ mental health, happiness and life satisfaction. However, in males the items loaded on four factors, all of which were unipolar, including a factor that displays males’ ability to self-control during psychological stress

AUGMENTED MASONRY DESIGN - A DESIGN METHOD USING AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) FOR CUSTOMIZED BRICKLAYING DESIGN ALGORITHMS

    Get PDF
The Augmented Masonry Design project presents experimental research about developing and applying Augmented Reality (AR) technology for customized design algorithms, exploring a real-time, interactive, and spatial-free design method for the early architectural design stage. We aim to resolve the current 2D-based design limitations and provide architects with a 3D-4D immersive perception in AR for a practical and easy-to-use design method. Furthermore, with reference to the Covid-19 pandemic, we propose that this method could break through site accessibility and constraints by breaking the barriers of physical space. Towards this aim, we apply the Augmented Masonry Design into two prototypes: a) user interface (UI) immersive design, in which interactive inputs will communicate with design algorithms in AR through the inputs from the screen-based UI on mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets); b) intuitive interaction immersive design, in which interactive inputs will be translated to design algorithms directly in AR through hand gestures on head-mounted devices (HMD) (e.g., Microsoft HoloLens). Our Findings highlight the advantages of immersive design in the initial stage of architectural drafts, which gives designers better spatial understanding and design creativity, as well as the challenges arising from the limitations of current AR devices and the lack of real physical simulation in the design system

    Get PDF
The global increase in pharmaceutical spending has led to enhanced international awareness of the unused and expired drug issues due to improper drug disposal\u27s harmful economic, environmental, and health effects. Consequently, the study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward expired drug disposal among the community in Beirut City, Lebanon. A cross-sectional, observational, questionnaire-based study was conducted. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. The fact that improper disposal of expired medicine affects the environment and health was acknowledged by 70.7% of the 450 participants. Even though 72.2% of the participants knew that the best method for drug disposal was medication disposal boxes, 50.4% did not know about the use of the drug take-back system. Expired drugs were present in 71.1% of the participants’ homes, and 78.9% of the participants discarded them in household garbage. In fact, 53.6% agreed that there is a lack of adequate information on the safe disposal of expired household medicines. This study revealed a lack of proper advice on the safe disposal of expired medicines. Consequently, the government should initiate feasible expired drug programs to educate the public. Improper disposal of expired drugs has a negative impact on the environment. The current study revealed that 78.9% of the participants discards expired drugs in an improper way. Accordingly, actions should be taken to save the planet

METHODS AND SURFACE MATERIALS REPAIR FOR CONCRETE STRUCTURES – A REVIEW

    Get PDF
Concrete is a very critical material that may require maintenance and possible repair periodically, especially in important structure such as bridges. In general, concrete in structures (e.g. reinforced concrete) may be subjected to cracks due to a variety of reasons. These include, design and external environments such as the ingress of harmful ions into the concrete, unexpected extra loads including earthquakes. These cracks can affect not only the appearance of the structure but more importantly the structural performance of concrete and the integrity of the concrete structure. Therefore, when cracks occur a proper repair method should be selected, based on the intended performance of the structure and economy. This should be taken into consideration while choosing the repair method in order to end up with a structure that can serve for the intended service life. The type of crack, its location, dimensions, and many other factors shall be taken into account while selecting the suitable repair method. This paper is a review of the various types of cracks and repair techniques used in each case

THE DUTY OF RESERVATION IN PUBLIC OFFICE

    Get PDF
The duty of reservation is considered one of the established principles in the jurisprudence of administrative justice, as it plays a crucial role in the performance of public service. It imposes restrictions on the freedom of expression of employees to ensure the smooth and progressive functioning of public facilities. Although the Lebanese legislator did not explicitly and exclusively mention this duty, it is inferred from the comprehensive provisions of Articles 14 and 15 of Legislative Decree No. 112/59. Accordingly, fundamental principles such as neutrality, moderation, preserving the dignity of public service, maintaining a good reputation, and professional confidentiality must be respected. This duty becomes even more stringent for holders of higher positions in the state. We concluded that the duty of reservation is a general principle that should be respected both within and outside the public service, as it is linked to the public interest and should be explicitly enshrined in laws without ambiguity

    Get PDF
Water quality deterioration in Lebanon is a pressing national issue and there is a high need for continuous water quality assessment and monitoring of water bodies in the country. This study aims at assessing water quality of Ras El-Ain Ponds, a major natural water resource for domestic use in Tyre district, South Lebanon by using the widely applied Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME WQI). Sampling was conducted during February-March, 2023 and physiochemical and microbiological water quality parameters were determined using standardized methods. Assessed parameters in our study are temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chloride, hardness, sulfate, orthophosphate, total organic carbon, fluoride and E. coli which is considered as a main indicator of fecal contamination of waterways. CCME WQI was calculated following the Canadian Water Quality Guidelines in view of the permissible levels set by the World Health Organization (WHO), Lebanese Standards Institution (LIBNOR) and CCME. With the exception of marginal levels of EC and TDS according to WHO and CCME, assessed water quality parameters were within the permissible ranges of standards for domestic water use. As for the CCME WQI, the obtained values fell between 90.73 and 94.42 % which indicates a “Good Quality” level confirming the suitability of water for domestic use. This research presents the first attempt to evaluate the CCME WQI of Ras El-Ain Ponds for quality monitoring and proper decision making. More comprehensive validation of CCME WQI that covers temporal and climatic variabilities is recommended for the assessment process
