Analysis of 3702 patients with acne vulgaris and concomitant comorbidities in Turkey: a multi-centered, prospective, controlled study.
Background Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects the pilosebaceous unit. Although it is considered to be a skin-limited disease, different clinical studies have recently been published in which the disease is accompanied by systemic symptoms. In this study, systemic comorbidities accompanying acne vulgaris and the relationship between existing comorbidities and disease severity are investigated.
Methods This prospective multicenter study was conducted by the Turkish Society of Dermatology Acne Study Group. Twelve dermatology clinics and 14 clinicians throughout Turkey participated in the study. A structured physician-administered questionnaire was used to collect patient demographics, clinical findings, and lifestyle data. Physicians recorded each participant's medical history, including current and past comorbidities, duration of any comorbidity, smoking, and drinking. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated.
Results There were 3022 patients in the adolescent acne group and 897 in the control group. The incidence of nonmigraine headache in adolescents with acne was significantly higher than in the nonacne group (P = 0.019). There were 680 patients in the postadolescent acne group and 545 in the control group. In the postadolescent group, incidence of metabolic disease was lower than the control group (P = 0.003). In the postadolescent group, premenstrual syndrome (P < 0.001) and PCOS (P = 0.007) were more common than the control group.
Conclusions In this study, we observed that acne vulgaris does not cause systemic comorbidities. There is also a need for new studies involving a large number of patients to illuminate systemic diseases accompanying acne vulgaris
Evaluation of work-related musculoskeletal problems in pediatric surgeons.
Purpose Pediatric surgeons are exposed to intense work-related activities, depending on their profession, including residency training. This study aims to investigate the musculoskeletal symptoms and analyze the relationship between musculoskeletal symptoms and the demographics, physical activity levels, and body mass index (BMI) of pediatric surgeons. Methods A total of 82 pediatric surgeons (female, 20; male, 62) were included in this study. The musculoskeletal symptoms were determined using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The levels of physical activity were determined using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results The mean age of the participants was 48.97 +/- 8.894 years, the mean BMI was 26.72 +/- 4.12 kg/m(2), and the mean working time after acquiring their specialty was 18.65 +/- 9.83 years. The average surgery counts per week were 15.22 +/- 12.17. Pediatric surgeons mostly complained from lower back pain, upper back pain, neck pain, and right and left shoulder pain. Surgeons with higher BMI had higher pain scores and received more treatment sessions. Conclusions Pediatric surgeons' complaints are related to their total numbers of surgery. Higher BMI and lower physical activity seem to be the major contributing factors for developing musculoskeletal symptoms. The study results indicated that surgeons should keep their BMI levels to the optimum and increase their physical activity levels
Anticorrosive Properties of Green Silver Nanoparticles to Prevent Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion on Copper in the Marine Environment
Microbiologically influenced corrosion is a global problem especially materials used in marine engineering. In that respect, inhibitors are widely used to control fouling and corrosion in marine systems. Most techniques used in inhibitor production are expensive and considered hazardous to the ecosystem. Therefore, scientists are motivated to explore natsural and green products as potent corrosion inhibitors especially in nano size. In this study, antibacterial and anticorrosive properties of green silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were studied through weight loss, electrochemical characterization, and surface analysis techniques. The corrosion of copper (Cu) in artificial seawater (ASW), Halomonas variabilis (H. variabilis) NOSK, and H. variabilis + AgNPs was monitored using electrochemical measurements like open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization curves. AgNPs showed excellent antibacterial activity against pathogenic microorganisms. Electrochemical studies demonstrate a noticeable decrease in OCP and current density in ASW containing H. variabilis + AgNPs compared to both ASW and ASW inoculated with bacterium, which confirmed the decrease of corrosion rate of copper. Furthermore, the obtained voltammograms show that the silver nanoparticles were adsorbed on the copper electrode surface from the corrosion solution. Thus, the results prove that the novel idea of green silver nanoparticles acts as an anticorrosive film in the marine environment
The role of labile Zn and Zn-transporters in the pathophysiology of mitochondria dysfunction in cardiomyocytes.
An important energy supplier of cardiomyocytes is mitochondria, similar to other mammalian cells. Studies have demonstrated that any defect in the normal processes controlled by mitochondria can lead to abnormal ROS production, thereby high oxidative stress as well as lack of ATP. Taken into consideration, the relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction and overproduction of ROS as well as the relation between increased ROS and high-level release of intracellular labile Zn, those bring into consideration the importance of the events related with those stimuli in cardiomyocytes responsible from cellular Zn-homeostasis and responsible Zn-transporters associated with the Zn-homeostasis and Zn-signaling. Zn-signaling, controlled by cellular Zn-homeostatic mechanisms, is regulated with intracellular labile Zn levels, which are controlled, especially, with the two Zn-transporter families; ZIPs and ZnTs. Our experimental studies in mammalian cardiomyocytes and human heart tissue showed that Zn-transporters localizes to mitochondria besides sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum and Golgi under physiological condition. The protein levels as well as functions of those transporters can re-distribute under pathological conditions, therefore, they can interplay among organelles in cardiomyocytes to adjust a proper intracellular labile Zn level. In the present review, we aimed to summarize the already known Zn-transporters localize to mitochondria and function to stabilize not only the cellular Zn level but also cellular oxidative stress status. In conclusion, one can propose that a detailed understanding of cellular Zn-homeostasis and Zn-signaling through mitochondria may emphasize the importance of new mitochondria-targeting agents for prevention and/or therapy of cardiovascular dysfunction in humans
Plantar sensation, plantar pressure, and postural stability alterations and effects of visual status in older adults.
Purpose Ageing leads to plantar sensation and pressure alterations and poor postural control. The aim of this study was to compare the plantar sensation and static plantar pressure distribution between young and older adults. A secondary aim was to investigate the effect of ageing and visual status on postural stability. Materials and methods Forty older subjects and 43 young adult individuals participated in the study. Plantar light touch sensation was evaluated using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments. Static plantar pressure and postural stability were assessed with the WinTrack(R) Pedobarography device. Results Plantar sensation thresholds of the older individuals were higher compared to the young in all plantar regions (p < 0.001). The plantar contact area was greater in older individuals (p < 0.001). Maximum plantar pressure of midfoot was higher and maximum plantar pressure of the rearfoot and whole foot was less in older individuals during quiet stance (p < 0.05). The main effects of group and visual condition were significant for mean latero-lateral and antero-posterior sway speed with large effect sizes (p < 0.05). Conclusions The sensation of all plantar regions reduced, the rearfoot plantar pressure decreased, and the midfoot plantar pressure increased in older individuals compared to young. Postural stability was reduced in the older individuals, and their postural control was more affected by the eliminated visual information compared to the young. Increased plantar contact area and midfoot plantar pressure may be related to decreased MLA height in older individuals. Older individuals may need visual information more to maintain postural control because of reduced plantar sensation
Effectiveness of Lactate Dehydrogenase to Albumin Ratio in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Thromboembolism
Objective: The aim of the study is to inspect effectiveness of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) to albumin ratio (LAR) in patients with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). Method: A total of 307 patients who admitted to emergency unit, between January 2017 and March 2020, with chest pain and sudden onset of dyspnea were enrolled in this single- center and retrospective study. Computed tomography pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) was performed to confirm pulmonary embolism. Results: LAR, neutrophil, monocyte, D-dimer, LDH values were significantly higher and albumin values were significantly lower in patients with pulmonary embolism compared to those without. Average age of 307 participants were 68.93 years. While 140 patients had confirmed PTE and 167 were without PTE. Linear regression analysis for LAR in the diagnosis of PTE, revealed a correlation coefficient as r=0.320 (p<0.001). Positive and negative predictive values for LAR in the diagnosisi of PTE were, 63.3% and 75.2%, respectively. In ROC analysis relation of LAR to PTE was found to be stronger than LDH and albumin alone. Conclusion: LAR, which is a very simple and available test, may be used as a novel parameter in the diagnosis of PTE
Interferon-Gene Family Alterations Following the SARS-Cov Infection in Association with Iron Metabolism and Lymphoid Biology
Interferon (IFN) family has a significant impact on both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this current bioinformatics study is to assess IFN-gene family alterations following the SARS-CoV infection in association with the iron metabolism and lymphoid biology.Gene expression data of human bronchial epithelial cells treated with SARS-CoV for 12, 24, 48 hours were obtained from Array Express (GSE17400). In order to use the obtained data in other targeted analyses,the raw data were normalized by robust multisequence analysis in accordance with the procedure in the Affy package in R. These data consist of 23344 genes (54675 probe sets). In addition, each gene has three repeated expression data values for 12, 24, 48 hours, respectively. For the 48 hours group,positive regulations of the natural killer (NK) cell activation and NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity, as well as hematopoietic stem cells proliferation,were found to be more significant regard to their nominal p-value, family-wise error rate, and false discovery rate (q-value) calculated by gen set enrichment analysis. The gene sets with nominal (NOM) p-value 0.8) with exposure time to the virus. These results suggest that hematopoietic stem cell proliferation pathway is affected by the viral SARS-CoV infection
ÇOCUK KLİNİKLERİNDE ÇALIŞAN HEMŞİRELERDE MERHAMET DÜZEYİ VE MERHAMET YORGUNLUĞU
Bu çalışma, çocuk kliniklerinde çalışan hemşirelerin merhamet du zeyi ve merhamet yorgunlug unun belirlenmesi amacıyla tanımlayıcı tu rde çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın o rneklemini Konya ilinde bulunan ve kurum izni alınan kamu, o zel ve u niversite hastanelerinin çocuk kliniklerinde çalışan 192 hemşire oluşturmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri Ocak 2019’da toplanmaya başlanmıştır. Veriler “Bilgi Formu”, “Merhamet O lçeg i”, ve “Çalışanlar İ çin Yaşam Kalitesi O lçeg i’nin “Merhamet Yorgunlug u Alt O lçeg i” ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde sayı, yu zde, ortalama, standart sapma, Mann Whitney U testi ile Kruskal Wallis testi kullanılmıştır. Anlamlılık p<0.05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Çocuk kliniklerinde çalışan hemşirelerin merhamet du zeyi puan ortalamasının 98.55±11.44 ve merhamet yorgunlug u puan ortalamasının 14.09±8.79 oldug u ve aralarında negatif yo nlu , zayıf du zeyde ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki oldug u bulunmuştur (r=-0.179; p=0.013). Mesleg i tercih etme ile merhamet du zeyi arasında, çalışılan servis, mesleg i ve çalışılan bo lu mu tercih etme durumu ile merhamet yorgunlug u arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Araştırma bulguları dog rultusunda hemşirelerin demografik ve klinik o zelliklerine go re merhamet du zeylerinin yu ksek, merhamet yorgunlug u du zeylerinin du şu k oldug u sonucuna varılmıştır ve merhamet ile merhamet yorgunlug u arasında ters bir ilişki oldug u, hemşirelerin merhamet du zeyi arttıkça merhamet yorgunlug u du zeyinin azaldıg ı tespit edilmiştir
Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) Based Biosensor Functionalized by HER2/neu Antibody for Breast Cancer Cell Detection
The heterogeneity and metastatic features of cancer cells lead to a great number of casualties in the world. Additionally, its diagnosis as well as its treatment is highly expensive. Therefore, development of simple but effective diagnostic systems which detect the molecular markers of cancer is of great importance. The molecular changes on cancer cell membranes serve as targets, such as HER2/neu receptor which is detected on the surface of highly metastatic breast cancer cells. We have aimed to develop a specific and simple quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based system to identify HER2/neu expressing breast cancer cells via a receptor-specific monoclonal antibody. First, the QCM chip was coated with polymeric nanoparticles composed of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA). The nanoparticle coated QCM chip was then functionalized by binding of HER2/neu antibody. The breast cancer cells with/without HER2/neu receptor expression, namely, SKBR3, MDA-MB 231 and also mouse fibroblasts were passed over the chip at a rate of 10-500 cells/mL and the mass changes (Delta m) on cell/cm(2) unit surface of sensor were detected in real-time. The detection limit of the system was 10 cells/mL. Thus, this QCM-based HER2/neu receptor antibody functionalized system might be used effectively in the detection of HER2/neu expressing SKBR3 breast cancer cells
Assessment of seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in blood donors applied to the blood center of Gazi university hospital
Background and Objectives: Toxoplasmosis is a life-threatening zoonotic infection in immunosuppressive individuals. Determining the prevalence and seropositivity rates of toxoplasmosis in asymptomatic blood donors is crucial in terms of the risk status of the transmission of this infection to the blood recipients.
Materials and Methods: In this study, the presence and level of the specific Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies in blood donors was investigated by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). The statistical significance levels between Toxoplasma seropositivity and demographic characteristics of the donors such as age, educational status, raw meat consumption, drinking water supply were examined.
Results: Toxoplasma IgG seropositivity was found among the 225 (25.6%) of the donors present in the study group, while IgM seropositivity was detected in 20 donors (2.3%). The number of donors with only IgM (+) was 8 (0.9%). Both IgG and IgM seropositivities were found in 12 donors (1.4%).
Conclusion: Our study provides information about Toxoplasma seropositivity based on the samples collected from the donors who were admitted to the blood center of a university hospital in Ankara, Turkey. This study demonstrates that Toxoplasma seropositivity is high in the rural areas and the regions where the education level is low
