    This study explores how employees us proactive strategic behavior in combination with other proactive work behavior and proactive person-environment fit behavior. Specifically, by using 266 focal manager-supervisor dyads, we study the link between proactive strategic scanning, voice, feedback-seeking and performance. As hypothesized, proactive strategic scanning is positively related to voice. We argue that the link is sequential, in such a way that voice mediates the positive effect of strategic scanning on performance, which is supported by our results. In addition, we find partial support that higher levels of feedback-seeking moderate the strategic scanning-performance relationship. Implications for theory and practice are discussed

    A joint replenishment production-inventory model as an MMAP[K]/PH[K]/1 queue

    In this paper we analyze a continuous review finite capacity production-inventory system with two products in inventory. With stochastic order quantities and time between orders, the model reflects a supply chain that operates in an environment with high levels of volatility. The inventory is replenished using an independent order-up-to (s, S) policy or a can-order (s, c, S) joint replenishment policy in which the endogenously determined lead times drive the parameters of the replenishment policy. The production facility is modeled as a multi-type MMAP[K]/PH[K]/1 queue in which there are K possible inventory positions when the order is placed and the age process of the busy queue has matrix-exponential distribution. We characterize the system and determine the steady state distribution using matrix analytic methods. Using numerical methods we obtain the inventory parameters that minimize the total ordering and inventory related costs. We present numerical comparisons of independent and joint replenishment policies with varying lead times, order quantities, and cost reductions. We further demonstrate the interplay between the two products in terms of lead times, order quantities and costs

    The impact of control on the discount for lack of marketability

    Valuations of private companies can be required for tax purposes, merger and acquisition transactions, divorce settlements, partnership restructurings, etc. Very often, these valuations take place in litigious circumstances. The process for valuing private companies is deceptively complex. This is notably because there is no consensus on the size and determinants of two important valuation discounts that may need to be applied: the discount for lack of control (DLOC) and the discount for lack of marketability (DLOM). We have constructed a unique dataset based on court decisions that decide on a DLOM and identify its determinants. Ultimately, this dataset has allowed us to examine whether the level of control attached to the valuation subject has a significant effect on the DLOM. This paper finds that control, while normally attributed solely to the DLOC, also impacts marketability. This hitherto overlooked determinant has a statistically significant impact of 8% on the DLOM. Contrary to conventional wisdom, control applies not once but twice to a private company’s value: as the primary driver of the DLOC and again as a key determinant of the DLOM

    Stability and accuracy of deterministic project duration forecasting methods in earned value management

    Earned Value Management (EVM) is a project monitoring and control technique that enables the forecasting of a project’s duration. Many EVM metrics and project duration forecasting methods have been proposed. However, very few studies have compared their accuracy and stability. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents an exhaustive stability and accuracy analysis of deterministic EVM project duration forecasting methods. Stability is measured via Pearson’s, Spearman’s and Kendall’s correlation coefficients while accuracy is measured by Mean Squared and Mean Absolute Percentage Errors. These parameters are determined at ten percentile intervals to track a given project’s progress across 4,100 artificial project networks with varied topologies. Findings – Findings support that stability and accuracy are inversely correlated for most forecasting methods, and also suggest that both significantly worsen as project networks become increasingly parallel. However, the AT þ PD-ESmin forecasting method stands out as being the most accurate and reliable. Practical implications – Implications of this study will allow construction project managers to resort to the simplest, most accurate and most stable EVM metrics when forecasting project duration. They will also be able to anticipate how the project topology (i.e., the network of activity predecessors) and the stage of project progress can condition their accuracy and stability. Originality/value – Unlike previous research comparing EVM forecasting methods, this one includes all deterministic methods (classical and recent alike) and measures their performance in accordance with project duration.The first author acknowledges the University of Talca for his Doctoral Program Scholarship (RU-056- 2019).     The impact of financial, human and social capital on becoming an entrepreneur through acquisition

    While studies on successful entrepreneurship are abundant, this stream of research focused predominantly on start-up entrepreneurship. Acquiring an existing firm, or entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA), is an alternative form of entrepreneurial entry. Using a unique sample of nascent ETA entrepreneurs, in particular middle-aged senior experienced individuals, collected through online surveys, we test the importance of three forms of capital on the odds of successfully acquiring a business: financial, human, and social capital. Human capital or the experience and expertise of the ETA entrepreneur significantly increases the chances of success. However, contrary to our knowledge of start-up entrepreneurs, financial capital is another vital predictor, while social capital seems to have no significant impact. Our findings suggest that start-up and ETA entrepreneurship require different resources to be successfully completed due to their inherent difference

    The case is suitable for participants who want to enhance their machine learning (ML) and data science skills by solving a real-world application in the insurance industry. It can be taught to non-executive (i.e., master of business administration) and executive audiences, in courses at the intersection of strategic (management) accounting, data science, and ML, as the case offers a unique example of how data science and ML are applied to the traditional accounting and actuarial field. Although not necessary, it might be useful for participants to have some programming experience in Python before starting the case. After working through the case and assignment questions, students will have the opportunity to do the following: Understand the relevancy of ML within a business context. Identify problematic disability claims and their impact on a company’s P&L. Gain preliminary insights using exploratory data analysis to optimize premium calculation. Apply unsupervised techniques such as clustering and gain insights into the data. Train, use, and interpret supervised ML techniques in a multi-class classification setting. Obtain business-relevant insights to improve smart decision-making and launch targeted strategic actions.During an Allianz Benelux SA (Allianz) board meeting held in early 2019, Allianz’s chief financier officer (CFO) had a profound discussion with Allianz’s chief data and analytics officer (CDAO) on improving the company’s profit and loss (P&L) statement by targeting problematic cases among disability claims related to Allianz’s life insurance product. It appeared that certain claims had very long durations, leading to recurrent payouts surpassing the total amount of premiums. Consequently, there were too many claims that could translate into future losses. If this phenomenon persisted, Allianz could lose millions of dollars in revenues. Therefore, the CFO contacted the CDAO and his data office and requested that the team identify the client segments in which the most problematic cases of disability claims occurred. Additionally, the CFO wanted the data office to build a predictive model that could estimate the duration of a claim, to adapt the premium coverage to specific customer segments
