Smart metering interoperability issues and solutions: Taking inspiration from other ecosystems and sectors

    No full text
Interoperability in the context of smart electricity metering is high on the European policy agenda, but its essence has been challenging to capture. This paper looks at experiences in other ecosystems (electromobility and buildings), in other sectors (healthcare and public administration), and at the national level in the Netherlands and the UK. We show that the definition of interoperability depends on the context, that there are common solutions to different issues across sectors and that cross-sectoral factors must be increasingly considered. We recommend adopting a broader view in smart metering beyond the interoperability of devices, considering solutions that have worked in other sectors and exploiting synergies across sectors. Our analysis of experiences provides a comparison that can help move the debate at the EU level forward

How are Competing Logics Combined in Managerial Teams? The Impact of Branch Founding Team Hybridity on the Growth of Islamic Bank Branches in Turkey, 2002–19

    No full text
Abstract Hybrid staffing – i.e., composing a workforce with individuals with oppositional institutional logics – is a strategy organizations can use to navigate through complex institutional environments. We propose that hybrid teams led by individuals with the legitimate logic from the perspective of the target audiences (conformist‐led hybrids) will outperform all‐conformist, non‐hybrid teams, and that hybrid teams led by individuals with the contested logic (alien‐led hybrids) will underperform non‐hybrid teams. Moreover, the performance advantage of conformist‐led hybrids will be attenuated by ideological polarization and demographic stability of the embedding community, and the performance disadvantage of alien‐led hybrids will be exacerbated by these two community characteristics. We tested our multilevel contingency model with the newly founded Islamic bank branches in Turkey in 2002–19. We found that the conformist‐led hybrids had a growth advantage over non‐hybrids, and alien‐led hybrids had a growth disadvantage, especially when the embedding communities were ideologically polarized. Theoretical implications are discussed

Linguistic cues in online product reviews

    No full text
Online product reviews ("reviews" hereafter) are prevalent and valuable. Because of that, a large stream of research in marketing investigated reviews under the following three main topics: 1) the role of review writers, 2) the role of review readers, and 3) the role of linguistic cues in reviews. This dissertation further builds on this stream and proposes three new angles that were under-researched. Specifically, we compose three essays that focus on 1) the intents of review writers to write a review based on linguistic cues and their impact on perceived review helpfulness, 2) the effect of humanlike linguistic cues on perceived review helpfulness, and 3) the usage of emotional intent based on linguistic cues in fake reviews and its impact on review trustworthiness. All three essays are structured under the same pattern to use linguistic cues as a tool to provide a unique solution for the related issues in reviews from both writers' and readers' perspectives

In this study, we theoretically argue for a potential trade-off between risk information integrated into the strategy and the use of advanced analytics for risk management purposes with regard to the adaptive capacity of organizations. Furthermore, we investigate whether the adoption of an advanced analytics strategy helps overcome this suggested substitutive interrelationship by giving direction and communicating a clear strategic focus to employees, including senior management. To test our hypotheses, we collected survey data in summer 2020 from 174 non-financial companies that allows us to exploit the challenging setting of the Covid-19 pandemic for organizations and their risk management. Our results support both the substitutive relationship between strategy integration of risk management and the use of advanced analytics for risk management purposes, as well as the three-way complementarity between the two risk management design choices and advanced analytics strategy with regard to adaptive capacity. Thus, we contribute to the literature with new insights into the potential benefits of linking risk management practices to business intelligence and analytics in light of better decision-making and control

Enhancing Enterprise Family Social Capital Through Family Governance: An Identity Perspective

    No full text
Despite significant discussion surrounding the benefits of family social capital in family business research, precisely how it is built and maintained by enterprise families remains unclear. To explore how and when family governance practices can avoid the decay of enterprise family social capital, we examine the mediating role of family identity and the significance of both generational and business ownership. Testing of our moderated mediation framework using data from 175 enterprise families globally suggests that family governance can stimulate family social capital by strengthening family identity. We also find a negative moderating role for business ownership in this indirect relationship
