A Way of Knowing Promoted by Image Atlas in Creative Practice: The Layers of Space and Time

    Get PDF
application/pdfThis paper considers about a way of knowing peculiar to the creation of visual arts. Inspired by the ‘Mnemosyne atlas’ of German art historian Aby Moritz Warburg, we pay attention to the image atlas, capable of generating new meanings out of the arrangement of different images. Firstly, we discuss the trend of art and research in relation to the image atlas. Especially we are interested in Arts-Based Research (ABR) which identifies creative practice with research. Secondly, the second author who is at the same time artist, researcher, and teacher, scrutinizes autoethnographically her art work of an image atlas, created as an outcome of ABR. Lastly, we examine theoretically the possibilities of the making of image atlas as a practice of ABR. The disposition and layers of images enfolding multiple judgements, and their interruption, enable us to access to an alternative way of knowing.departmental bulletin pape

Survey report on the current state of outdoor sculptures

    Get PDF
application/pdfThe main causes of damages of sculptures placed outdoors include the deterioration caused by pollutants such as acid rain or automobile emissions, the wind and water damage caused by the change of temperature in the snowy regions, recent abnormal weather conditions, and the falling of thunderbolts. They were also damaged by the repeated major earthquakes. The sculptures placed in public space should coexist with their environment and be resilient to the environmental changes around them. Moreover, they should avoid doing any harm due to the damage because they are placed where many people pass by. I surveyed the present conditions of my own works from this viewpoint.departmental bulletin pape
