Frank Angier Ames, born in North Easton, Mass., July 11, 1858; died unm. in Boston, November 5, 1918. He was manager of the Ames Southside Plantation, Louisiana Parish, Louisiana. He, along with his cousin, O.F. Ames, were in charge of the Westwego plantation when the then famous Ames Crevasse opened on March 16, 1891, at the location of a faulty sluice for the irrigation of the Ames rice fields. Sightseeing boats came to see the water rushing through the break, the sound coming to the ear like the mighty rumble of a gigantic cataract. At the time of the crevasse, the river was within one foot of the top of the locks of the company\u27s canal. The water inside the locks was 12 feet lower than the river\u27s stage. A five-year retrospective on an undergraduate SMIF program

Purpose: For undergraduate-only, AACSB-accredited business programs, establishing a student managed investment fund (SMIF) can be an enormous, but potentially worthwhile, undertaking. Resources are often very limited – especially for faculty where their time is already consumed by teaching, administrative and publishing requirements. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the five-year experience at Stonehill College and suggest considerations for undergraduate institutions seeking to establish such programs. Design/methodology/approach: This is a retrospective on the experience of designing and implementing a SMIF-based academic program. Student education and professional skill development should be the primary outcomes evaluated with such programs. Included are brief perspectives on the program from its alumni with commentary on perceived value in one to four years following graduation. Findings: The experience to date suggests that establishing a SMIF at a smaller, undergraduate-only institution is challenging. For a SMIF to generate educational returns commensurate with its cost, it needs to be part of a comprehensive, academic-driven program that garners broad support by the business faculty and administration of the college. Personal reflections by its program alumni suggest that it can be a very meaningful academic and experiential learning opportunity. Research limitations/implications: This paper is focused largely on the experience of one institution. Further insights may be attained by a broader, unbiased analysis of institutions where SMIF programs have succeeded or failed to meet similar objectives. Practical implications: The authors suggests that the creation of a SMIF program at smaller, undergraduate-only institutions faces unique challenges relative to larger, more well-endowed universities. These challenges can be overcome but not without a broad internal commitment. These programs, if done in a comprehensive way, can significantly impact student outcomes. Originality/value: The retrospective offers up-to-date insights on the value and challenges of starting a SMIF program at smaller-sized, undergraduate-only academic institutions
Teaching courses in macroeconomics and monetary policy with Bloomberg analytics

The hands-on experience that students gain from such a course has many benefits, including deeper learning and clearer understanding of data. The authors describe goals and learning objectives, then compare Bloomberg with Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED). In addition, they provide examples of how to use Bloomberg in the classroom, describe how to have students perform sector analysis, show how Bloomberg tools are useful for analyzing monetary policy, discuss how to use Bloomberg to analyze the financial sector, and illustrate the platform’s use in a case study
Surface current confinement in circular ring optical antennas and its enhancement effect to the photoresponse of longwave infrared photodetectors

In this paper, we report the analysis of surface current confinement in circular ring optical antennas and its enhancement effect to the photoresponse of quantum dot (QD) longwave infrared (LWIR) photodetectors. Circular ring optical antennas with various inner and outer diameters were simulated to determine the electric near-field (E-field) and surface current distribution. Over 80 times E-field enhancement was obtained when the width of the ring is as narrow as 2 nanometers (nm) where the surface current is strongly confined. In addition, the E-field (|E|) shows a direct linear relationship with the surface current density. The linear relationship is analyzed using an RLC circuit model. The E-field enhancement of the circular ring optical antenna is compared with that of the two-dimensional metallic subwavelength hole arrays structure (2DSHA) and is found to have higher enhancement with a broader spectral band coverage. The circular ring optical antenna enhanced LWIR QD infrared photodetectors were fabricated and measured. The ring optical antenna with stronger surface current confinement shows a higher photocurrent enhancement. The experimental results agree well with the simulation. Broader band photocurrent enhancement than the 2DSHA structure was also verified
Evolution of non-kin cooperation: Social assortment by cooperative phenotype in guppies
© 2019 The Authors. Cooperation among non-kin constitutes a conundrum for evolutionary biology. Theory suggests that non-kin cooperation can evolve if individuals differ consistently in their cooperative phenotypes and assort socially by these, such that cooperative individuals interact predominantly with one another. However, our knowledge of the role of cooperative phenotypes in the social structuring of real-world animal populations is minimal. In this study, we investigated cooperative phenotypes and their link to social structure in wild Trinidadian guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We first investigated whether wild guppies are repeatable in their individual levels of cooperativeness (i.e. have cooperative phenotypes) and found evidence for this in seven out of eight populations, a result which was mostly driven by females. We then examined the social network structure of one of these populations where the expected fitness impact of cooperative contexts is relatively high, and found assortment by cooperativeness, but not by genetic relatedness. By contrast, and in accordance with our expectations, we did not find assortment by cooperativeness in a population where the expected fitness impact of cooperative contexts is lower. Our results provide empirical support for current theory and suggest that assortment by cooperativeness is important for the evolution and persistence of non-kin cooperation in real-world populations
