Study of frequency-dependent plasmonic enhancement of a circular disk nano-optical antenna array using a femtosecond laser frequency comb

In this paper, we report the study of the frequency-dependent plasmonic enhancement of a circular disk nano-optical antenna array and the photo-response of the optical antenna enhanced photodetector at different frequencies using a femtosecond (fs) laser frequency comb. A fs-laser frequency comb can provide hundreds of evenly spaced harmonic frequencies and thus allows simultaneous measurement of the plasmonic optical antenna enhancement effect at these harmonic frequencies. This offers a highly efficient frequency-dependent measurement approach compared to the conventional method of modulating of a c.w. laser, which measures the frequency response at each frequency. The impulse response of the circular disk nano-optical antenna array and the electric-field (E-field) distribution profile are simulated under a fs laser illumination. The light intensity spectrum is simulated and verified to have uniform intensities on the harmonic frequencies within the ±5 GHz frequency range. The photocurrent densities in different regions of a GaAs p-i-n photodetector are analyzed together with their frequency dependence at the harmonic frequencies of the fs laser frequency comb with a repetition rate of MHz. A circular disk nano-optical antenna array enhanced GaAs p-i-n photodetector was fabricated and measured using a fs laser frequency comb with the same repetition rate. The nano-optical antenna can provide ∼20 dB enhancement for the harmonic frequencies and extend the detector cut-off frequency from 2.4 GHz to 4.2 GHz
A rodent cage change insomnia model disrupts memory consolidation
© 2018 European Sleep Research Society Insomnia involves disruption of sleep initiation, maintenance and/or overall quality, and may interfere with cognition. Here, we evaluated memory impairment produced by rodent mild (acute) insomnia models. Insomnia models consisted of either single or repeated exposure to cages previously occupied (dirtied) by an unfamiliar rat for 5–7 days. Rats were trained in the Morris water maze to remember the platform location (acquisition), and were then exposed to: (a) 6 hr of undisturbed baseline; (b) dirty cage change-induced insomnia (animal placed into a cage dirtied by another rat for 6 hr); or (c) double-dirty cage change-induced insomnia (animal placed into a cage dirtied by another rat for 3 hr, and then another dirty cage 3 hr later). The animal\u27s memory for the platform location was then evaluated in a probe trial. Double-dirty cage change-induced insomnia significantly disrupted sleep, although the effects of dirty cage change-induced insomnia were overall not significant. In the fourth hour of double-dirty cage change-induced insomnia (following the second cage change), sleep episode number and duration alterations indicated sleep fragmentation. Furthermore, power spectral analysis revealed diminished wake and, to a lesser extent, rapid eye movement theta power (indicated by trend difference) in the last 3 hr of exposure. Significant deficits were noted for measures of water maze performance following double-dirty cage change-induced insomnia, indicating impaired memory. In summary, one variant of the rodent insomnia model, double-dirty cage change-induced insomnia, disrupted sleep and attenuated memory consolidation, indicating this paradigm may be useful to evaluate the effects of hypnotics on memory consolidation
Humberto medeiros: Advocate for the Poor—Brownsville and Boston: 1966–1983

Based on the Beatitudes of Jesus, as recorded by St. Matthew (5:1–12), the post Vatican II Church has through institutions and individuals made overt efforts to serve the poor to be a basic standard of ministry. Institutionalized as the “preferential option for the poor,” this belief was the foundation upon which Humberto Medeiros, Bishop of Brownsville, Texas (1966–1970) and Cardinal Archbishop of Boston (1970–1983), based his ministry. His understanding of the concept of “the poor” was broad, including not only the economically disadvantaged, but also those who for various reasons found themselves on the periphery of American society. His work with migrant farmworkers in Texas helped them to achieve greater economic justice. In Boston his promotion of low-income housing and work to reform the penal system revealed the breadth with which he understood the poor in American society. His work to achieve greater recognition, dignity and justice for those less advantaged in our society is indeed noteworthy

Multiproduct firms and antidumping duties: Evidence from India

With the growing availability of high-quality higher-dimension data in international trade, many new stylized facts have also emerged. One such stylized fact is that multiproduct firms play a significant role in international trade. In this paper, we investigate the effect of US antidumping duties on the exports of Indian multiproduct firms. In particular, we study whether US antidumping duties lead the Indian exporter to alter their product-scope to third country markets (aka to trade partners other than the US). Using a unique transaction-level data from India, we find that firms affected by US antidumping duties increased the number of products exported to other destinations by about 0.7 products, on average. This translates to a substantial 40% increase in the product-scope of these firms because a typical Indian exporting firm exported an average of 1.8 products to a given destination in our sample. We also find that firms whose products spanned multiple sectors drove most of this increase. However, we do not find any difference in the product-scope response of firms producing differentiated vs. those producing homogenous products. We find our results to be robust across various specification and sample size changes
Uncertainty and IPO initial returns: Evidence from the Tone Analysis of China\u27s IPO Prospectuses
© 2018 Elsevier B.V. IPO prospectuses play an irreplaceable role in the IPO process. The tone of IPO prospectuses, in terms of its definitiveness in characterizing the prospects and assessing the risks of different firms, could affect investors\u27 capability to estimate the firms that are about to go public. In a large sample of 1320 IPO prospectuses of China\u27s A-share market from 2007 to 2016, we find that uncertain or negative tone of IPO prospectuses is significantly associated with IPO initial returns and the post-IPO return volatility. Besides, empirical evidence shows that the negative or uncertain tone in the prospectuses lowers the stocks\u27 long-term returns. Our findings contribute to the literature by investigating the impact of connotative information transmission on stock returns during IPO process, based on which investors can do a better job in risk management
