Exposure to the ultraviolet filter benzophenone-3 (BP3) interferes with social behaviour in male Siamese fighting fish
© 2019 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour Oxybenzones like benzophenone-3 (BP3) are ultraviolet (UV) filters widely used in personal care products such as sunscreens. BP3 is currently receiving a great deal of attention because many of its properties, including high water solubility and potential to bioaccumulate, enable it to have damaging effects on aquatic ecosystems. One of these effects, the induction of coral bleaching, has led Hawaii to ban all sunscreens containing BP3. BP3 also appears to have endocrine-disrupting properties and has been found to affect animal physiology. However, behavioural consequences of BP3 exposure have yet to be thoroughly characterized. In the present study, we investigated the effects of BP3 on boldness, courtship and aggression in male Siamese fighting fish, Betta splendens, as little is known about the effects that BP3 has on fish social behaviour. To accomplish this, we assigned males to a treatment group (control, low, medium or high BP3 concentration) and completed individual (empty tank, novel environment and shoal) and social (courtship and aggression) behavioural assays before and after a 28-day exposure period. BP3 influenced the expression of social behaviours, with individual boldness generally unaffected. Changes in shoaling occurred regardless of BP3 concentration, while BP3-associated decreases in courtship and aggression were concentration dependent. Abnormal social behaviour may impede successful mating and alter territorial dynamics, with potentially heightened effects in species already experiencing other anthropogenic stressors

Directionally-unbiased unitary optical devices in discrete-time quantum walks
© 2019 by the authors. The optical beam splitter is a widely-used device in photonics-based quantum information processing. Specifically, linear optical networks demand large numbers of beam splitters for unitary matrix realization. This requirement comes from the beam splitter property that a photon cannot go back out of the input ports, which we call directionally-biased . Because of this property, higher dimensional information processing tasks suffer from rapid device resource growth when beam splitters are used in a feed-forward manner. Directionally-unbiased linear-optical devices have been introduced recently to eliminate the directional bias, greatly reducing the numbers of required beam splitters when implementing complicated tasks. Analysis of some originally directional optical devices and basic principles of their conversion into directionally-unbiased systems form the base of this paper. Photonic quantum walk implementations are investigated as a main application of the use of directionally-unbiased systems. Several quantum walk procedures executed on graph networks constructed using directionally-unbiased nodes are discussed. A significant savings in hardware and other required resources when compared with traditional directionally-biased beam-splitter-based optical networks is demonstrated

Helical swimming as an exploratory behavior in competent larvae of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica)
© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Helical swimming is a common behavior in larvae of many marine invertebrate species that may facilitate either exploration or feeding. Swimming in helices may increase exposure of larvae to settlement cues localized to the seafloor by enhancing their horizontal scanning motion near potential settlement sites. Alternatively, helical swimming may increase feeding efficiency by allowing an organism to maximize time spent in vertically-constrained food patches. In this study, we investigated whether the prevalence and geometry of helical swimming in competent larvae of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) vary in response to a settlement cue or to food. We performed two experiments, one examining helical swimming behavior in larvae exposed to different concentrations of a chemical settlement cue (“Cue Experiment”) and the other examining helical swimming of fed and starved larvae in conditions with and without algal food (“Feeding Experiment”). In the Cue Experiment, the proportion of larvae swimming in helices increased with decreasing cue concentration, and helices became wider, which suggests that helices may be an exploratory behavior that is curtailed when preferred habitat is detected. In the Feeding Experiment, neither the proportion of larvae performing helices nor helix geometry varied with food availability or satiation. Our results indicate that variations in helical swimming likely enhance the ability of C. virginica larvae to detect lateral variation in waterborne cues and locate suitable habitat prior to settlement
