Maria Hobart Ames was the oldest child of Oakes Angier and Catherine (Hobart) Ames. Born on October 13, 1856, she grew up in North Easton. On September 12, 1888, she married Richard Hickman Harte, a medical doctor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
