Strategic legitimization of administrative burdens in overt politics
In this study, we test a theoretical model of three framing cues that legitimize administrative burdens of welfare programs: 1) politicization cue (i.e., “burdens help administer selective welfare based on liberal principles”), 2) scapegoating cue (i.e., “burdens help prevent fraudulent abuse of welfare benefits”), and 3) fiscal health cue (i.e., “burdens help economize welfare programs for the government’s fiscal health”). A pre-registered, large-scale vignette experiment will be performed involving the National Basic Livelihood Security Program, a welfare program delivered by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in South Korea. A broader implication of this study is that administrative burdens play a significant role in policy processes, extending beyond the experiences of individuals in the target population of these policies
Effects of Loan-Sharking on Philippines' Microenterprises
This study investigated the effects of loan-sharking on microenterprises in the Province of Capiz, focusing on the sustainability of the business, profitability of the business, and standard of living when taken as a whole and grouped into entrepreneur and business. It was administered to 850 respondents on a quota sampling method where all microenterprises have existing businesses and have knowledge of loan-sharking. Since microenterprises continue to grow, loan sharks attract these business owners. Loan-sharking has been able to coexist with formal loaning systems, and microenterprises kept dealing business with them for it provides easy access to capital, easy payment method, and hope in a time of emergencies. Using statistical tools, findings show that respondents using their demographics are favorable with the effects of loan-sharking on the sustainability of the business and standard of living. On the other hand, the profitability of the business shows a contradiction. Though microenterprises want to get out of loan sharks due to very high-interest imposition and adverse effects; financial literacy, savings mobilization, behavior towards business development, and access to proper capital borrowing schemes geared toward higher business performance, long-term sustainability, and profitability are essential
ParentText Optimisation Study - A factorial randomised controlled trial to optimise user engagement in a chatbot-led parenting intervention in South Africa: Study protocol for the ParentText Optimisation Trial
ParentText is a chatbot-led parenting intervention, with the aim of increasing positive parenting and reducing child maltreatment. The current optimisation trial aims to optimise user engagement in this a chatbot-led parenting intervention delivered to parents (i.e., any adult responsible for the care and wellbeing of a child regardless of biological relationship) and their adolescent girls aged 10-17 years in South Africa. It will test the relative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of two intervention components designed to support user engagement in the ParentText chatbot: 1) remotely facilitated WhatsApp support groups delivered to participating parents and 2) in-person sessions delivered to parents and their adolescent girls. Additionally, this study will investigate the effectiveness of selected intervention component levels on adolescent and parent behavioural, mental health, and educational outcomes.
The ParentText Optimisation study is nested within a larger project implemented by mothers2mothers (m2m), a South African NGO, as part of their Children and Adolescents are My Priority (CHAMP) programme funded by USAID /PEPFAR. The study will be conducted across two districts in Mpumalanga Province – Ehlanzeni (mostly rural zones) and Nkangala (rural and peri-urban zones) – where CHAMP is implementing OVC/DREAMS Family Strengthening interventions to approximately 28,500 adolescent women and girls (between 10 and 17 years) and their caregivers in 2023
