Critical Theory from Hellenism to Modernism: A Reading of the Epistemological Foundations

    No full text
This study aims to investigate the foundations of critical theory from the Hellenic era to the age of modernity. The approach is based on the premise that criticism, like science, is a human endeavor built on cumulative efforts that go beyond mere taste. Rather, it is a complex body of scientific knowledge that utilizes thought, philosophy, ideology, art, and culture to analyze literary works and interpret their trends. We observe that traditional criticism is based on well-known foundations, the most important of which are taste, clarity, and order. In contrast, modern criticism is built on major principles such as unity, comprehensiveness, and interconnectedness

The Effects of Recent Modifications in Egyptian Building Regulations on Urban Development and Socioeconomic Conditions Over the Past Decade

    No full text
Over the past decade, Egypt has witnessed significant transformations in its urban regulatory framework, particularly through successive amendments to the Unified Building Law No. 119 of 2008. These legislative changes, implemented in 2015, 2021, and 2024, reflect evolving state strategies to manage urban growth, streamline construction processes, and address challenges in regulatory compliance. The 2015 amendments sought to enhance administrative coordination and facilitate permit acquisition, while the 2021 reforms imposed stringent restrictions on building height, coverage ratios, and facade dimensions, provoking widespread controversy due to their misalignment with local urban realities and economic capacities. In response to ensuing public and investor dissatisfaction, the 2024 amendments reversed key 2021 provisions, reinstating more flexible regulations to encourage development while reinforcing oversight mechanisms. This study analyzes the effects of these legislative shifts using both legal review and empirical data from Gharbia Governorate, where building permit issuance declined sharply post-2021, before stabilizing following the 2024 revisions. A structured survey involving citizens, professionals, and administrators revealed broad public concern over procedural complexity, socioeconomic exclusion, and increased property costs, highlighting the disconnect between national policies and local implementation contexts. The findings underscore the need for participatory, context-sensitive urban legislation that balances regulatory control with economic feasibility and social equity

Experimental and Numerical Investigation on the Effect of Projectile Mass and Apex Angle on Penetration Depth into Sandy Soils

    No full text
Projectile penetration in granular soils remains a critical concern in defense engineering and ballistics research. This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation of rigid cone-tip projectile penetration into very dense sand, examining the influence of apex angle and projectile weight on penetration depth. Laboratory experiments were conducted using metallic projectiles with apex angles of 10°, 30°, 60°, and 90° and weights of 2.445, 3.87, 5.33, and 6.81 kg, dropped from a height of 4.295 m into a 500×500×500 mm wooden tank filled with sand to 400 mm height at 95% relative density. Through systematic testing, two empirical correlation equations were initially developed: one relating penetration depth to apex angle and another linking depth to projectile weight. To enhance the accuracy of these correlations, Abaqus Explicit finite element simulations were employed using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) methodology. The sand was modeled using the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model with parameters derived from laboratory characterization. Validation was performed for 30° and 90° apex angle projectiles, achieving excellent convergence accuracy of 96.1%. Subsequently, four additional numerical models were developed for extended apex angles (105°, 75°, 45°, 20°) and four models for increased projectile weights (8.265, 9.72, 11.175, and 12.63 kg), significantly expanding the experimental database. The enhanced correlations demonstrated substantial improvement, with the apex angle relationship evolving from polynomial to power form (R² = 0.97) and the weight correlation maintaining polynomial characteristics with improved coefficients (R² = 0.9839). These findings provide robust empirical tools for predicting projectile penetration behavior in dense sandy soils
