    Consumers\u27 response to food fraud: Evidence from experimental auctions

    This study uses a laboratory valuation experiment to examine whether food fraud occurring in one country affects the valuation of products from that country as well as products from other countries. We use a between-subject experiment design to compare consumers\u27 valuation of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) from different countries with and without exposure to information about olive oil fraud occurring in one of the countries. Results show that information about olive oil fraud in one country negatively affects the valuation of EVOO not only from that country but also from other countries, indicating negative spillover effects of food fraud. © Copyright 2020 the authors

    Enhancing Pedagogy in the Virtual Classroom: An Exploration of Qualitative Student Assessment

    Pedagogy, as it is commonly understood, is a generic term describing the educator-centered delivery of content to the learner. In a traditional learning environment, the learner has little, if any, control over how or when he or she interacts with the materials and learning activities. This pedagogical construct offers limited opportunities for one to examine the content through the lens of the individual lived experience, which mitigates the need to learn on the part of the adult learner. According to Alfie Kohn (1993), rewards serve the same function as punishments: They allow those with more power to exert control over those with less. In traditional quantitative student assessment constructs, grades are both punishments and rewards. By eliminating conventional points-based grading, or ungrading, Susan Blum argued, students are empowered to direct their learning outcomes based upon individual motivation and interests.     Assessing the effect of playing games on the behavior of ASD and TD children

    Purpose: Previous researches point that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show particular interests in computers and other multimedia electronics (Mazurek et al., 2012). Experts in pediatric care contemplate the possibility of exploiting this relationship to inform the interventions among children with Autism. This paper aims to explore how video games can be used to aid the cognitive and social development among children with ASD and typically developing children (TDC). Design/methodology/approach: The study design used was experimental, with 112 children as the main participants. The researchers watched the behaviors of the children through controlled observation as they compared the behaviors with their established models. In this case, the structured models worked as the control group in the experiment. To understand the relationship between the variables: exposure to video games and children\u27s social interactions, the researchers used multiple linear regression analysis, ANOVA and correlation coefficients Findings: The predictor model was effective because it accounted for at least 26% of the variation in the dependent variables at a statistical significance level of p \u3c 0.000. Other than the structured models, there were also individual predictors, which also established that when families played games with children, the children tended to calm down their negative behaviors. Hence, family playing games with children can help ease the symptoms of children with ASD and TDC at (t = 2.631, 4.180 and 0.024, p = 0.05). However, the duration of watching or playing the games did not contribute to children negative behavior such as poor school performance, failing to complete homework, playing games past bedtime and feeling agitated or isolated. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is original, and it is first to report the findings of this type of study. This research used unique sample sizes and variables, though within the existing theoretical framework of social science experiments.     Integrating a gas turbine system and a flameless boiler to make steam for hydrogen production in a solid oxide steam electrolyzer

    Solid oxide steam electrolyzer (SOSE) uses both electricity and steam to produce hydrogen in a large scale. Considering losses in the electrical power transmission and significant amounts of fuel for steam making, it is affordable to integrate the gas turbine (GT) system to the SOSE in the power plant to generate hybrid electrical power-hydrogen fuel. In this paper, design and performance of a hybrid electrical power generation-hydrogen production system are analytically analyzed. To make steam, a flameless boiler is coupled to the GT system using the GT extremely hot exhaust gases as the oxidizer. The results revealed that the turbine inlet temperature (TIT) should be kept more than 1314 K to obtain GT exhaust gases at temperatures higher than 870 K (auto-ignition temperature of methane) to maintain flameless combustion mode in the boiler. By increasing the flameless boiler temperature and consequently enhancing the SOSE steam temperature from 950 K to 1350 K, the rate of overall fuel consumption in the flameless boiler slightly increases, however the hydrogen production rate escalates from 2.2 mol/s to 10.2 mol/s. The novelty of this paper lies on the using the GT exhaust gases enthalpy to run a flameless boiler to drastically mitigate fuel consumption in hydrogen production system. The presented model in this paper can be used to perform more thermochemical analyses to attain insightful understanding of the hybrid electrical power-hydrogen production systems. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

    Characteristics of liquid fuel combustion in a novel miniature vortex combustor

    Miniature liquid fuel combustor in power generation requires confining combustion in the combustor chamber. However, this process faces substantial challenges that include higher heat loss, poor fuel vaporization rate, and low mixing residence time. In response to this challenge, a new method is proposed by introducing novel miniature combustor utilizing the advantage of the vortex flow motion that consists of two parts, a double chamber (inner tube and outer tube) at the top and a vortex-trapped chamber that is attached to anchor the flame at the bottom. The present combustor was operated by using n-heptane liquid fuel at fuel flow rate of 1.0–2.5 mL min−1 and airflow rate of 7.0–20.0 L min−1. The results showed that the heat transfer and recirculation mechanism sustain the combustion in the combustion chamber at fuel-lean regime. Confinement of the combustion inside the combustion chamber is attributed to recirculation phenomenon that was demonstrated through the enhancement of residence time and mixing rate. It is observed that the annulus enhanced the fuel vaporization rate, which is verified by measuring the temperature distribution at the combustor surfaces. The results of the thermal analysis also showed that the heat transfer enhancement is attributed to the vortex flow motion. © 2019, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary

    Investigating the Effect of Experiential Learning on Preservice Teachers’ Perception and Self-Efficacy with ELL Students

    Grounded in Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this study investigated the effect of a learning experience on preservice teachers’ perception regarding their ability to accommodate English Language Learners (ELL) in their future classrooms. Students attended a short lecture about an unfamiliar topic in a different language and then responded to a short survey to collect their perception. Participants were 40 preservice teachers attending courses focusing on foundations of special education and diverse learners. The results of the present study revealed a significant mean difference between students’ perception about ELL accommodation before and after their experience. Furthermore, students responded to questions regarding their ability to utilize the suitable response to intervention with ELL students. The results showed that students’ response to intervention and their self-efficacy to create suitable curricula were affected by this short experience. Finally, the results of students’ responses indicated that their perception did differ based on their gender and major. The implications and the importance of these findings will also be discussed
