The Effect of Attendance on the Academic Performance of Black Male Fourth-Grade Students in One Central Arkansas School District

This study is a journey through the academic lives of 4th-grade Black males in one Central Arkansas school district. This study aimed to investigate certain behavioral variables that may impede the learning and achievement of fourth-grade Black males in Central Arkansas. In the study, groups were established by ethnicity and gender and their test scores on ACT Aspire assessments were statistically analyzed to determine if there were statistically significant differences among these groups. Attendance was used as an independent variable to determine a relationship between math and reading scores and ethnicity and gender. Participants were selected based on standardized test results, school enrollment status, and race criteria. The methods of the study encompassed the beliefs and concepts of several theorists on learning styles, variables of knowledge, and traditional public schools. An in-depth literature review revealed current research related to the learning and the achievement of males at the elementary level, of Blacks in general, and of Black males at the elementary level. The study showed that there is a statistically significant difference between the mean reading and math scores when we controlled for days absent by ethnicity. Although the data indicated a significant difference between black and white students, it suggests that there is not a statistically significant difference between groups (male and female) on the ACT Aspire math and reading scores in this public Central Arkansas school district. Multiple regression models were run to know whether gender, ethnicity, and days absent affected the output-dependent variables (reading and math scores). In the series of regressions, each model added another predictor variable. The first model ran the predictor total days absent, the second model added ethnicity, and the third model added gender. The Sig. F Change is statistically significant shown in the models run for math, but the Sig. F for reading did not show a statistically significant difference when models were run. Many black male students continue to struggle in public school schools across America. The findings in this study were no different

Developing Understanding of Science Process Skills Through Research and Practices

    Get PDF
The research examines out first-hand experience of conducting experiments in science and conceptualizing the experimental design process for teaching science concepts in elementary grades. We used Drosophila, the fruit fly as a model organism for studying the phenomenon that animals have traits inherited from parents. The phenomenon is a performance expectation in the Next Generation Science Standards (3-LS3-1). We observed the phenomenon, developed hypothesis, conducted experiments , collected data, analyzed and communicated our findings through discussions and presentations. We utilized our knowledge acquired from the process in developing lesson plans for teaching in elementary grades. In this presentation we will discuss how developing understanding of science process skills through research benefited our teaching practices . We recommend explicitly discussing the nature of scientific inquiry and implementing hands-on opportunity to practice skills can help teachers develop and refine science teaching methods

    Graduate Faculty Directory

    No full text
The Graduate College would like to update the current faculty search page to filter search results by Department and Research in addition to Name. With the current system, a person who wanted to find an unknown professor based upon a department or an interest in research topic would be unable to search because the only option is to type the professor\u27s name. We have created a website linked to a database containing graduate faculty that is able to search by name, filter by department, and search through the professors\u27 listed research topics. This website will be much more useful and easier to use with an updated design to be more appealing to the user

Military-Affiliated Student Experiences in Post-Secondary Education

    Get PDF
AbstractThis paper is intended to learn about the experiences of military-affiliated students in post-secondary education by surveying veterans, service members, and dependents on what resources they have available, what resources they would like to have, and comparing between 2-year, 4-year, public, and private institutions. Participants were surveyed at five different institutions. Three closed-ended questions asked for background and other disadvantaged identifiers. Three open-ended questions ask in detail about their experiences at their institution. Students at public 4-year institutions received the best assistance with room to improve. Institutions of higher learning would benefit their military-affiliated students by providing a military-affiliated success center as a one-stop with all possible resources in one location. Institutions that can not feasibly provide this could offer a military-affiliated orientation to cover resources and benefits. There should be more efforts to recruit, retain, and graduate military-affiliated students

A Feasibility Study to Determine the Most Optimal Location for a Ski/Mountain Bike Resort in Greater Northwest Arkansas

    No full text
This project was completed by the author with some assistance and consulting from his faculty mentor, Dr. Patrick Hagge. In order to answer the fundamental study questions concerning the feasibility of a mountain bike and ski resort being established in Arkansas, ArcGIS Pro mapping software was utilized. Some data was collected from outside sources, including NOAA and the Arkansas GIS Office. Other data was either interpolated from the aforementioned sources or created by the author. For regionwide suitability, four broad factors were considered. Those included aspect, slope, temperature, and snowfall. Ten specific resort sites were chosen and then ranked considering each of those factors along with accessibility, the presence of important cultural sites, existing infrastructure, and the relative size of skiable and bikeable terrain. Based on the data and analysis, the best subregion for the resort is the Ozark Plateau and the most optimal location is located north of Harrison on the Missouri border

Occupational Therapy Interventions on a Patient with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

In this research project, I examined the symptoms of a patient that developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and researched a proper plan for treatment from an occupational therapist’s point of view. Because I am going to occupational therapy school in the fall, I wanted my project to reflect the importance of my future career. Being a Rehabilitation Science major with a minor in Disability Studies, I used my knowledge gained from three years of classes onto the project’s content regarding acquired disabilities and the interventions needed. This topic is meaningful because it not only shows a plan for treatment for one specific condition, but also increases awareness on the field of occupational therapy and its necessity to the world of disability

Perceptions of Varying Types of Health Conditions Among Arkansas Tech University Students

Attitudes towards minor ailments, psychological conditions, chronic illnesses, and disabilities were measured among students of Arkansas Tech University through an online questionnaire. 10 questions were asked for each condition type for a total of 40 questions. Participants were asked to rate their level of agreeance from 1-5, 1 being “highly disagree” and 5 being “highly agree”. High scores (higher response rate of “strongly agree”) represented attitudes of Talcott Parsons’ sick role theory. Low scores (higher response rate of “strongly disagree”) represented attitudes of the ICF model and inclusiveness. The minor ailments/illnesses scale had the lowest mean score of 27.186. The disabilities scale had the second-lowest mean score of 29.124. The psychological conditions scale had the second-highest mean score of 30.340. The chronic illnesses scale had the highest mean score of 31.588. Findings suggest that on average, Arkansas Tech University students hold moderately inclusive attitudes toward health conditions. Statistical significance was found between the condition scales, suggesting that participants did not regard or treat condition types as the same. Keywords: health, attitude, conditions, sick role theory, Talcott Parsons, ICF model, inclusivenes

Medicinal Use of Cannabis in Canines

    No full text
Medicinal cannabis continues to gain popularity for treating a variety of health issues for both humans and animals. This paper examines this growing trend and looks closer at the benefits canine cannabis offers in veterinary care. Cannabis carries a negative connotation due to legal and safety concerns. However, research has shown medicinal cannabis offers multiple benefits, such as chronic pain relief, epilepsy management, and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite the increased availability of cannabis products for dogs, community and veterinary education remain stagnant. Surveys were created to gain both veterinary and community opinions on the use of cannabis for canine health. The collected data suggests that despite the versatility and success that continue to be uncovered, a lack of education leaves veterinarians weary of recommendation, and this has created a lack of guidance in the dog-owning community looking to embrace this herb
