Teacher Effects on English Language Acquisition of English Language Learners in Arkansas Schools
As the number of Arkansas English Language Learner students grows, Arkansas public schools grapple with how to best serve ESOL students. Questions surrounding this topic include which teachers are best equipped to serve ELLs, which schools are best suited to serve targeted ESOL programming, and what successful ESOL teachers perceive as best practices in the ESOL classroom. Little research exists analyzing student performance differences between bilingual and monolingual teachers. In addition, little research exists examining the impact of school performance on ELLs achievement. Lastly, more research is needed with Arkansas ESOL teachers to determine what practices they are using in the classroom.
This study examined student ELPA21 test results from 30 teachers working at eight Arkansas public school districts and school’s ESSA Index grade. In addition, the researcher interviewed seven successful ESOL teachers to determine teacher perceptions of successful ESOL practice. Quantitative data analysis of the ELPA 21 scores and school ESSA grades revealed no relationship between student performance based on languages spoken by the teacher or school ESSA grade. Qualitative data analysis of the teacher interviews revealed three common themes perceived by the successful ESOL teachers; 1. Providing a safe, caring, and welcoming environment, 2. The importance of understanding a LEP student’s background/experiences, 3. The importance of parent communication and relationships
Optimizing Campus Chat-bot Experience Using PUAA: Integrating Large Language Model (LLM) into University AI Assistants
The advent of large language models (LLMs) such as Chat-GPT and Bard marks a significant milestone in knowledge acquisition, offering a streamlined alternative to the traditionally labor-intensive process of navigating through multiple checkpoints on the web. This emerging trend in LLMs renders the prevalent rule-based chatbots, commonly utilized by universities, increasingly outdated and subpar. This research project proposes integrating LLM technology into university websites, specifically targeting the needs of students seeking information about their institutions by introducing PUAA (Personal University AI Assistant). Our approach involves using the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework, leveraging the capabilities of the LlamaIndex in conjunction with state-of-the-art LLMs such as Mistral-7B provided by the Hugging Face. To quantify the effectiveness of this integration, we have employed a comprehensive set of metrics, which includes user satisfaction rates and accuracy in information retrieval. PUAA enhances the student\u27s experience by providing instant, accurate information and reduces the workload on administrative staff, allowing them to focus on more complex inquiries and tasks. This endeavor aims to pioneer AI adoption in educational institutions, demonstrating the viability and benefits of advanced AI tools in enhancing the academic experience and information accessibility for students and staff
Lonoke County Park Suggestions
Research Question: Based on information obtained from examining Lonoke County Park user demographics, user preferences, and examining local parks in the area, what are some suggestions that can increase user satisfaction and increase the overall number of visitors?
Methods: I used online data sources as well as my own experience visiting local Lonoke County Parks to form my suggestions.
Analysis: After sorting through all my data, I settled with three different Lonoke County Parks that I provided suggestions for. The parks included Cabot Community Pond Development, Lonoke Ball Park, and Anthony Schmidt Memorial Park. Some common themes within the parks that I discussed included increasing accessibility, repairing areas of the park, increasing safety, and increasing available activities
Wildlife Trafficking and Illegal Trade in Endangered Species
There has been a long endeavor with illegal trade and trafficking involving endangered species. There are ways to fix it if we put more focus into the type of punishments or boons to give to the people who do it right. There are numerous ways to fix this like better surveillance or rewards/encouragement for the people who do it by the book where it outweighs doing it illegally. Using surveillance has helped locating and identifying the lawbreakers for people like game wardens. Giving rewards or encouragement has also kept people at bay from committing these crimes because now they can see the impact it has and are persuaded otherwise. These solutions are essential parts to dropping down the numbers of wildlife trafficking and illegal trade
Evaluation of Interior Least Tern (Sterna antillarum anthalassos) colony success rate and distance upstream on the Arkansas River
The previously endangered Interior Least Terns (or LETEs) are currently being monitored to ensure their populations are increasing. The purpose of this study was to provide current data to inform management decisions that must be made during their migration season. Sandbars where LETEs colonized were assigned a number corresponding to river mile. Fledglings per Breeding pair Rate (FBR) was calculated by dividing peak fledgling count by half of the adult count. A total of 798 adult LETEs and 228 fledglings were observed on sandbars. A colony was considered ‘failed’ if it had an FBR of 0, and ‘successful’ for anything higher. A linear regression was used to compare FBR with river mile to determine if there was a relationship between the two factors. Of the 22 sandbars observed, 4 were failed and 18 were successful. Results of this study show there is no observed significant relationship between FBR and river mile (R² = .08, F1,22 = 2.89, p = 0.22)
Arkansas Tech University Modular Robotics Training System
Arkansas Tech University Modular Robotic Training System (ATUM RTS) project aims to combine two existing systems: The Georgia Tech Robotarium and the Micromouse maze-solving competition. The goal of ATUM RTS is to incorporate the challenge and excitement of maze-solving robots with the cloud-based learning system of the Robotarium. We intend to develop an automatic maze table with future remote capabilities to further student learning and engagement. By being able to create custom mazes with ATUM RTS, students will have access to a resource that will allow them to practically apply what they are learning in the classroom. The ATUM RTS maze table will consist of modular tiles with remote controlled walls in between them that can be raised and lowered in order to create the custom maze. The main goal for this phase of the project was to design the wall structure and the wall actuation system through the utilization of nitinol shape memory alloy. The actuation system was determined by looking at previous studies with nitinol and by experimenting with different methods. The best method was found to utilize two-way nitinol, mechanical relays, and a bi-stable magnetic flexure. The remaining objectives to be completed by future groups for this project include designing and programming remote and wireless communication capabilities, and implementing the complete 12x12 tile table
