The Religious and Political Background of Romeo and Juliet: A Unit Plan

    No full text
This research over the religious and political background of Romeo and Juliet is in the form of a unit plan, as my major is English Education. This Unit plan consists of five assessments, three of them being formative and two of them being summative. These assessments include a quiz, discussion questions, a Socratic seminar, a creative project, and a summative writing assessment. The two guiding questions to this research are: What are the implications of the Elizabethan Era on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet? and Can students make historical connections and find historical context in a literary piece

Anomaly Detection with Spiking Neural Networks (SNN)

Abstract: Anomaly detection, the identification of rare or unusual patterns that deviate from normal behavior, is a fundamental task with wide-ranging applications across various domains. Traditional machine learning techniques often struggle to effectively capture the complex temporal dynamics present in real-world data streams. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), inspired by the spiking nature of biological neurons, offer a promising approach by inherently modeling temporal information through precise spike timing. In this study, we investigate the use of Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) for detecting anomalies or unusual patterns in data. We propose an SNN model that can learn what constitutes normal behavior in an unsupervised manner, without requiring labeled examples of anomalies during the training process. Our SNN approach models the temporal patterns inherent in the data through precise spike timings, allowing it to capture the complex dynamics often present in real-world data streams. Importantly, the model can continually adapt and detect anomalies. Evaluations of diverse datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our SNN-based approach for anomaly detection compared to traditional methods. Our design achieves high detection accuracy. Furthermore, we leverage the interpretable nature of SNNs to provide insights into the learned representations and decision boundaries, enabling better understanding and trust in the anomaly detection process. Our findings highlight the potential of SNNs as a powerful tool for accurate, robust, and explainable anomaly detection, applicable to a wide range of domains and applications

    Chromebook Charging: Motivation Through Personification

    Get PDF
This research study was conducted to provide a solution to students arriving at first-period classes with uncharged Chromebooks. The research questions ask if personification will motivate students to charge their Chromebooks before arriving at their first-period class. Prior literature shows that students are more likely to accomplish goals when they are motivated, both intrinsically and extrinsically. Hence, this study focuses on personification to motivate students. Students’ Chromebooks will be personified to be “pets”, through animal stickers and name badge stickers. The end goal is to see an increase in student preparedness by coming to class with charged Chromebooks. For this research study, the participants included twenty-four sixth-grade mathematics students within the same classroom. Data was gathered by a mixed experimental design: observing students\u27 behavior and conducting a pre-test and post-test survey

A Diverse and Inclusive Way to Teach Art

    Get PDF
A Diverse and Inclusive Way to Teach Art is a presentation that gives information on how to teach with respect to all students. It is the instructors responsibility in the classroom to make the conscious decision to include examples of artists that look like the population within your classroom. This presentation informs educators how to teach students about many artists of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders

Changes in animal vocalizations in response to a total solar eclipse

    Get PDF
My proposed research project will study the changes in animal vocalizations in response to the total solar eclipse that will take place in Russellville, Arkansas, on April 8, 2024. I will use audio recordings before, during, and after the eclipse to quantify changes in animal vocalizations. Most recordings will be in the range of normal hearing, and will primarily detect birds, frogs, and insects. Additionally, I will deploy one ultrasonic recorder capable of detecting bats. From these recordings I will be able to quantify overall and species-specific call rates. Audio recordings will be paired with continuous measurements of light intensity and temperature via dataloggers

Chemical and Biological Investigation of the Effects of Vinegar Baking Sambucus canadensis Anthocyanins

    Get PDF
New treatments for cancer and bacterial infections are needed, especially because most patients acquire resistance to conventional first-line treatments. Many natural product metabolites exhibit potent activity. Sambucus sp., elderberry, and Salvia sp., or sage, are well-known shrubs for their therapeutic benefits. This study aims to analyze how secondary metabolites are extracted from the native American Elderberry, Sambucus canadensis, and Sage, Salvia officinalis. It also aims to investigate the process of vinegar baking of medicinal plants to enhance the chemical space and increase the biological properties. Vinegar baked and non-vinegar baked elderberries and sage were utilized to test this theory. A Soxhlet extractor was used to extract the medicinal molecules. A rotary evaporator and a separatory funnel were required for many liquid-liquid extraction steps. The samples are subjected to Gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectroscopy GC-MS to identify the secondary metabolites. Our preliminary results show an improvement in the antibacterial activity of both the elderberries and sage baked in vinegar extract compared to the raw organic extract
