DELLA Proteins and CBL-CIPK Signaling Pathway are Emerging Players in Plant Biotechnology

    No full text
CBL-CIPK signaling pathway is a calcium dependent signaling pathway conserved across the plant kingdom. Recent research indicates the central role it plays in growth, development, ion homeostasis and stress management in plants. DELLA proteins are negative regulators of gibberellins and almost ubiquitously influence several aspects of plant physiology. The important role of DELLA proteins in green revolution was discovered and very recently they are found to influence several aspects of root growth and root-microbe interactions. Thus, understanding the genetic network involving CBL-CIPK signaling pathway and DELLA proteins in plant roots can identify targets for biotechnological innovations. This may propel generation of transgenic lines with robust root system capable of efficient water and ion absorption with higher degree of selectivity and regulation. Plant improvement through breeding and genetic modifications have largely focused on the above-ground parts and there is a vast space for similar improvement concerning roots. CBL-CIPK and DELLA can serve as excellent genetic engineering candidates for climate smart agriculture, alleviation of hidden hunger, phytoremediation of heavy metals and environmental sustainability

Capitalism in Europe vs. Latin America

    Get PDF
Focusing on the years 1995 to 2023, what are the universal traits of capitalism versus the more varying or flexible traits, as demonstrated by comparing European and Latin American practices of capitalism. For the country comparisons, researchers have agreed on 3 common variables to evaluate the capitalist practices of a Latin American country with a European one. These shared variables are 1) The power of the country\u27s currency, 2) The informal versus formal employment of the labor force, as well as unemployment rate, and 3) The income gap between the rich and poor. Each researcher will also include 1-3 additional variables of the researchers choosing to evaluate their selected countries

Evaluating Reclaimed Mines and Heavy Metal Soil Contamination

    Get PDF
Arkansas has a rich history of lead and zinc mining. While there are still some active mines, many historical mines have been abandoned and/or reclaimed. Although most reclamation procedures result in the burial and containment of target minerals, accessory minerals and elements can be leached out of waste materials/tailings piles and include heavy metals (i.e., Pb, As, Cd). We aim to evaluate the soil and watershed of a few abandoned/reclaimed mines in Pope County, AR, for the presence of heavy metals/source minerals. Soil and stream sediment geochemistry will be conducted using a portable x-ray fluorescence analyzer. Field work and sampling plans will be developed to initially identify the presence of heavy metals in the immediate area, and then secondarily as to whether heavy metals are actively being transported in soil and stream sediments. Results from this study will help determine whether there is potential heavy metal contamination/leaching from these inactive mines

Overcoming the Achievement Gap: Arkansas\u27 Utilization of Weighted Student Funding to Support Students of Poverty

    Get PDF
With over 63% of its students living in poverty, the state of Arkansas has a challenge when it comes to equitable funding and opportunities for its students. One funding mechanism that has been in place in Arkansas for over 20 years now is a categorical funding allocation known as Enhanced Student Achievement Funds (ESA). School districts receive these funds based on their percentage of students in poverty. While this weighted student funding model of allocating more funds to identified characteristics has been in place in Arkansas for over two decades, little research exists to gauge whether these allocation mechanisms successfully address student achievement. The purpose of this research was to determine if the weighted student funding model utilized with Arkansas’ ESA funding resulted in any significant differences in student achievement
