    The prognostic role of neopterin in COVID-19 patients

    In Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) cases, hyper inflammation is associated with the severity of the disease. High levels of circulating cytokines were reported in severe COVID-19 patients. Neopterin produced by macrophages on stimulation with interferon-gamma, which is an important cytokine in the antiviral immune response, hence it can be used to predict the severity of disease in COVID-19 cases. In this study, it was aimed to determine the prognostic value of the neopterin for the prediction of severe disease in patients with COVID-19. This single-center, prospective study was conducted in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and healthy volunteers. Severe and mild COVID-19 cases were compared in terms of clinical and laboratory findings as well as serum neopterin levels on hospital admission. To assess the prognostic utility of neopterin between the severe and mild COVID-19 groups, a receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. The median serum neopterin level was four times higher in COVID-19 patients than the healthy controls (46 vs. 12 nmol/L;p < .001). The AUC value of serum neopterin was 0.914 (95\% confidence interval, 0.85-0.97). The sensitivity and specificity of serum neopterin for the cut-off value of 90 nmol/L to identify severe COVID-19 cases were 100\% and 76\%, respectively. Serum neopterin levels on hospitalization were significantly higher in severe COVID-19 disease than mild COVID-19 patients. Neopterin levels can be used as an early prognostic biomarker for COVID-19 on admission

    A Comparative Performance Investigation of Swarm Optimisers on the Design of Hydrostatic Thrust Bearing

    In the design of hydrostatic thrust bearings, power loss that occurs during operation is an important parameter that affects the design, and due to such features, it falls within the interest of design optimisation studies. The fact that the decimal places of the constraints and design variables used for minimum power loss optimisation of hydrostatic thrust bearings are highly effective on the result is a challenge for the design optimisation studies carried out on the problem and has yet made it rather attractive for the researchers. In this study, it is this feature of the problem that makes it the most important motivator in researching the performance of different metaheuristic optimisers in solving the minimum power loss problem. To this end, 7 different optimisers, four of them for the first time, were applied under equal conditions with various pop sizes and a number of iterations, and their performances were addressed under this challenging benchmark problem. The performances of these methods were compared to each other. In addition to the success of optimisers in reaching a solution, their performance in different populations and iterations is also discussed in the study. Considering the results, it is seen that MVO is the most effective optimiser in solving the problem and is followed by the WOA, PSO, and GWO. The application of WOA, MVO, CS, and SSA, for the first time, on the problem has exhibited that these methods could be used in optimisation of such delicate engineering problems

    Plants of the Plantago genus are widely used in Turkish folk medicine especially for the treatment of wound, abscess, and inflammation. The aqueous extract and five phenylethanoid glycosides acteoside (1), arenarioside (2), echinacoside (3), isoacteoside (4), and leucosceptoside A (5) isolated from the aerial parts and roots of Plantago holosteum Scop. (Plantaginaceae) were tested for their possible inhibitory activity against hyaluronidase, elastase, and collagenase, related to wound pathogenesis. Even though the aqueous extract prepared from the aerial parts (36.26\%) and roots (47.01\%) and the isolated compounds acteoside (29.13\%), echinacoside (28.73\%), and isoacteoside (31.69\%) exerted a notable inhibition, arenarioside and leucosceptoside A were found inactive in the hyaluronidase enzyme inhibition test. Similar results were obtained from the collagenase enzyme inhibition test. The aqueous extract prepared from the aerial parts (31.09\%) and roots (35.17\%), echinacoside (25.13\%), and isoacteoside (23.85\%) exerted a notable inhibition in this test. However, none of the extracts and isolated compounds displayed elastase enzyme inhibitory activity. The experimental data demonstrated that P. holosteum displayed a remarkable enzyme inhibitory activity against hyaluronidase and collagenase. This paper is the first report regarding the in vitro enzyme inhibitory activity of P. holosteum
