Critical submergence for a horizontal pipe intake

    No full text
Incipient air entrainment due to a free-surface vortex at a horizontal pipe intake passing through a dead-end wall located in a channel is investigated. Available potential flow based methods fail to predict the critical submergence due to friction effects introduced by the dead-end wall. In this study, velocity at the critical spherical sink surface, which is an imaginary spherical surface having identical center and the discharge as the intake, is associated with the average approach flow velocity instead of assuming it as a constant as in the previous studies. This simpler method for determination of critical submergence is tested with available experimental data and the agreement is found to be good. Scale effects are also discussed. It is shown that for the similarity between the model and prototype horizontal intakes in terms of air-entrainment, there is no need to consider Froude, Reynolds, and Weber numbers similarities. Comparative analysis and forecasting of COVID-19 cases in various European countries with ARIMA, NARNN and LSTM approaches

    No full text
In this study, confirmed COVID-19 cases of Denmark, Belgium, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Finland, Switzerland and Turkey were modeled with Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Nonlinear Autoregression Neural Network (NARNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) approaches. Six model performance metric were used to select the most accurate model (MSE, PSNR, RMSE, NRMSE, MAPE and SMAPE). According to the results of the first step of the study, LSTM was found the most accurate model. In the second stage of the study, LSTM model was provided to make predictions in a 14-day perspective that is yet to be known. Results of the second step of the study shows that the total cumulative case increase rate is expected to decrease slightly in many countries. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Strategies of management of deep spinal infection: from irrigation and debridement to vacuum-assisted closure treatment

    No full text
Postoperative surgical site problems (PSSPs) following spinal surgery may lead to patient mortality, increased treatment costs and possible recurrent medical interventions. Despite efforts to reduce spinal surgery-related infection rates, complications are common and significantly increased by patient comorbidities. Since PSSPs occur regardless of deterrent measures, it is essential to distinguish the related risk factors. Different treatment conventions for PSSPs, for example, antibiotic treatment, debridement, soft tissue care and removal of implants have been prescribed with blended outcomes. The utilization of the wound vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) system has gained increasing popularity in the management of deep wound infections after deformity surgery
