Uptake, distribution and elimination of palladium-doped polystyrene nanoplastics in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) following dietary exposure
The ingestion of nanoplastics (NPs) by fish has led to concerns regarding fish health and food chain transfer, but analytical constraints have hindered quantitative data collection on their uptake and depuration. We used palladium-doped polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-Pd NPs, ~200 nm) to track particle fate in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during a week-long dietary exposure and subsequent 7-day depuration period on a control diet (no added PS-Pd NPs). At Day 3 and 7 of the exposure, and after depuration, the mid intestine, hind intestine, liver, gallbladder, kidney, gill and carcass were sampled. All organs and the carcass were analysed for total Pd content by inductively couple plasma mass spectrometry. After 3 days of exposure, the mid (32.5 ± 8.3 ng g−1) and hind (42.3 ± 8.2 ng g−1) intestine had significantly higher total Pd concentrations compared to the liver and carcass (1.3 ± 0.4 and 3.4 ± 1.1 ng g−1, respectively). At Day 7, there was no time-related difference in any organ (or the carcass) total Pd concentrations compared to Day 3. When the total Pd content was expressed as a body distribution based on mass of tissue, the carcass contained the highest fraction with 72.5 ± 5.2 % at Day 7, which could raise concerns over transfer to higher trophic levels. The total number of particles that entered the fish over the 7 days was 94.5 ± 13.5 × 106 particles, representing 0.07 ± 0.01 % of the Pd the fish had been fed. Following depuration, there was no detectable Pd in any organ or the carcass, indicating clearance from the fish. These data indicate that these NPs are taken into the internal organs and carcass of fish, yet removal of the exposure results in substantial excretion to below the limit of detection.publishedVersio
SENBYGG
For å redusere støyen midler vi bilder over samme område for hvert kalenderår.
Global Surface Ocean Acidification Indicators From 1750 to 2100
A new data product, based on the latest computer simulations and observational data, offers improved projections of ocean acidification (OA) conditions from the start of the Industrial Revolution in 1750 to the end of the 21st century. These projections will support OA research at regional and global scales, and provide essential information to guide OA mitigation and adaptation efforts for various sectors, including fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, marine resource decision-makers, and the general public.publishedVersio
Viral infection switches the balance between bacterial and eukaryotic recyclers of organic matter during coccolithophore blooms
Algal blooms are hotspots of marine primary production and play central roles in microbial ecology and global elemental cycling. Upon demise of the bloom, organic carbon is partly respired and partly transferred to either higher trophic levels, bacterial biomass production or sinking. Viral infection can lead to bloom termination, but its impact on the fate of carbon remains largely unquantified. Here, we characterize the interplay between viral infection and the composition of a bloom-associated microbiome and consequently the evolving biogeochemical landscape, by conducting a large-scale mesocosm experiment where we monitor seven induced coccolithophore blooms. The blooms show different degrees of viral infection and reveal that only high levels of viral infection are followed by significant shifts in the composition of free-living bacterial and eukaryotic assemblages. Intriguingly, upon viral infection the biomass of eukaryotic heterotrophs (thraustochytrids) rivals that of bacteria as potential recyclers of organic matter. By combining modeling and quantification of active viral infection at a single-cell resolution, we estimate that viral infection causes a 2–4 fold increase in per-cell rates of extracellular carbon release in the form of acidic polysaccharides and particulate inorganic carbon, two major contributors to carbon sinking into the deep ocean. These results reveal the impact of viral infection on the fate of carbon through microbial recyclers of organic matter in large-scale coccolithophore blooms.publishedVersio
To stasjoner har lave oksygenkonsentrasjoner i bunnvannet.
Combined physical and biogeochemical assessment of mesoscale eddy parameterisations in ocean models: Eddy induced advection at non-eddying resolutions
Ocean components of Earth System Models employed for climate projections do not routinely resolve mesoscale eddies for computational cost reasons, and the associated subgrid processes are still parameterised. While the performance of physics parameterisations in a numerical ocean model is normally assessed by examining the associated physical responses, biogeochemical responses are also important but often treated separately. Given recent advances in mesoscale eddy parameterisations, specifically for the eddy induced advection, this work systematically explores the joint consequences for physical as well as biogeochemical responses brought about by a more updated proposal for the eddy induced velocity coefficient, in the context of an idealised ocean relevant model. Relative to a high resolution mesoscale eddy resolving model, the more updated mesoscale eddy parameterisation is able to capture aspects of the model truth in the physical responses. The biogeochemical response is however rather more subtle, where a ‘better’ response with the conventional eddy parameterisation with a constant coefficient could arise from a physically inconsistent response, while a parameterisation that improves the bulk physical response may still fall short in its biogeochemical response. The present work highlights a need to assess both physical and biogeochemical aspects when judging the performance of eddy parameterisations, and additionally provides some important baseline model sensitivities that future assessments employing other parameterisations or in more complex settings could compare against.publishedVersio
The costs and trade-offs of optimal foraging in marine fish larvae
In a warming world, both the metabolic rates of ectotherm predators and the phenology of their prey organisms is subject to change. Knowledge on how intrinsic and extrinsic factors govern predator–prey interactions is essential in order to understand how the environment regulates the vital rates of consumers. Controlled experiments, however, simultaneously testing behavioural and growth responses of the larvae of fish and other ectotherm organisms in different feeding regimes are scarce. Prey size (PS) selection was determined for young Atlantic herring Clupea harengus L. larvae offered 100- to 850-μm copepods Acartia tonsa at five different concentrations. In separate, 4- (13°C) or 7-day (7°C) trials, the effect of prey size on larval foraging behaviour, specific growth rate (SGR) and biochemical condition (RNA:DNA, RD, a proxy for individual instantaneous growth) was tested. Preferred (selected) PS was similar at all prey concentrations but increased from 3% to 5% predator length with increasing larval size. At various temperatures, dome-shaped relationships existed between PS and larval RD (and accordingly SGR). Compensatory changes in foraging behaviour (pause and feeding strike frequencies) existed but were not adequate to maintain positive SGR when available prey were substantially smaller than those preferred by larvae. A physiology-based model predicted that larvae depended more heavily on optimal prey sizes at the colder versus warmer temperature to grow well and that the profitable prey niche breadth (the range in prey sizes in which growth was positive) increased at warmer temperatures. Seemingly subtle match-mismatch dynamics between ectotherm predators and their preferred prey size can have large, temperature-dependent consequences for rates of growth and likely survival of the predator. To the best knowledge, this was the first study to directly quantify the “costs and trade-offs” of optimal foraging in marine fish larvae.publishedVersio
