The role of habitat in predator-prey dynamics and its applications
Habitat is a powerful force in ecosystems, and the quantity and quality of habitat can shape ecosystem structure and function. Among the many important roles that habitat plays is as a mediator of ecological interactions, including predator–prey dynamics. In the context of ecosystem restoration, there is great potential to better understand how predator–prey dynamics are influenced by habitat and whether this has implications for how ecosystems are managed. We consider the ways in which habitat serves as an important mediator of interactions between predators and their prey and present four ways in which habitat acts as an intermediary that enhances or diminishes this relationship. We found that habitat provides refuge from predators and shapes the physical traits of prey as they use their surroundings to protect themselves. We also discuss how habitat creates physical resistance and sets the cost of predation for predators and how habitat facilitates apparent competition within a community context. These roles of habitat are well established in ecology, but we believe they are underdeveloped from an applied perspective. We conclude that habitat must be appropriately considered in the context of how it mediates predation. Given the ways that habitat influences predation, restoration efforts should consider if and how physical measures may positively or negatively affect species interactions and whether this could lead to success or failure of overall programs.publishedVersio
Memory for Music (M4M) protocol for an international randomized controlled trial: Effects of individual intensive musical training based on singing in non-musicians with Alzheimer’s disease
Introduction: The number of people living with dementia is increasing worldwide. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. It typically manifests itself initially with cognitive impairment in the memory domain, and gradually progresses towards affecting all activities of daily living. Active music interventions, particularly singing, may improve mood, social behaviour, and quality of life. However, little is known about their effects on cognition, although some studies have provided promising results. The M4M project aims to fill this gap in research by measuring the effects of learning new songs on cognitive functioning. Specifically, M4M will examine memory for new songs in non-musician adults with AD after undergoing intensive versus minimal individual musical training based on singing novel songs.
Methods and analysis: Home-dwelling adults with AD, 65 years or older, will receive 5 months of intensive intervention (2x/week) and 5 months of minimal intervention (1x/month). In a crossover design, participants will be randomized to receive either the intensive or minimal intervention first, with 2 months between the intervention periods. Participants will receive individual music lessons to learn new songs, provided by a music instructor with adequate training. The main outcomes will be measured at the beginning and end of each intervention period. General cognition will be measured with the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale – Cognitive (ADAS-cog) by an assessor blinded to the randomisation. Participants’ memory for music will be measured using the N400 component of electroencephalographic event-related potentials in response to music stimuli. Additional outcomes evaluated during intervention sessions include mood and musical performance observations. With 113 participants randomised, the trial will have 80% power to detect clinically meaningful effects. Relations between mood, memory for music, and cognitive abilities will be examined, with sex, age, AD stage, previous musical training, and education as covariates. M4M will be conducted in close collaboration between academic researchers, service providers, and service users to ensure relevance and applicability.
Ethics and dissemination: Dissemination of findings will apply to local, national, and international levels. The study has been approved by the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics in Norway.submittedVersio
Informantane etterspør meir praksisnære døme i rettleiinga.
Causal oceanic feedbacks onto the winter NAO
Of the climate variability patterns that influence the weather in the North Atlantic region in winter, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the most dominant. The effects of the NAO span from cold air outbreaks to unseasonably warm conditions and unusual precipitation, with significant impacts on human activities and ecosystems. While a connection between the NAO and antecedent sea surface temperature (SST) conditions has been recognised for decades, the precise causal interaction between the ocean and the atmosphere remains enigmatic. In this study we uncover a robust statistical relationship between North Atlantic SSTs in November and the NAO throughout the subsequent winter in the extended ERA5 reanalysis back to 1940. We apply a well-established causal inference technique called mediation analysis, commonly used in social science and now adopted in climate research. This analysis highlights the roles of low-level baroclinicity, latent heat fluxes, and latent heat release in mediating the effect of November SSTs on the NAO in January and February. It is important to recognise that these mediators are interrelated. Moreover, our analysis reveals bidirectional relationships, where the NAO reciprocally mediates the effects of the November SSTs on these variables. This is evidence of a complex web of feedback mechanisms which collectively contribute to the response of the winter NAO to late autumn/early winter SSTs.publishedVersio
Among-river pattern in relative abundance of two salmonid fishes reflects temperature-dependent competition
Temperature is a key driver in determining species distribution and abundance across climatic and geographical gradients. This occurs through direct physiological effects of temperature on performance, but may also result from temperature effects on species interactions. In the current study we experimentally test for temperature-dependent competition between juvenile anadromous Atlantic salmon and brown trout and evaluate the role of temperature in shaping the relative abundance of these species across 88 Norwegian rivers. When the two species were reared in allopatry their somatic growth rates were similar across a range of temperatures (4–16°C). When reared in sympatry, the growth of salmon was greatly reduced at the coldest temperature relative to when reared in allopatry, whereas this was not the case for trout. The effect of interspecific competition on growth was more similar for the two species at warmer temperatures. Thus, interspecific competition effects were strongly asymmetric only at the lowest temperature, with trout outcompeting salmon. The results from the experiment were reflected in qualitative patterns of relative abundance of salmon and trout in natural populations, which shifted from being trout dominated in rivers with low summer temperatures to being salmon dominated in warmer rivers. These results provide an empirical example of how temperature effects on the relative abundance of species can only be understood in light of information about temperature-dependent species interactions.publishedVersio
Plast i norske elver
Denne studien viser resultatene fra kartlegging av makroplast (her, plastbiter over ca. 2 cm) i norske elver. Overvåking over flere år kan bidra til å vise trender for mengde makroplast i elver over tid. Plast i norske elverpublishedVersio
The Norwegian government approves farm-based education for pupils who do not benefit sufficiently from ordinary school. The aim of this article is to contribute knowledge on secondary school pupilsʼ experiences of such programs, and how they affect inner motivation for school. The article is based on qualitative interviews with thirteen pupils in years nine and ten (ages 14-16) from farms located in different regions of Norway. The pupils experienced the farmersʼ care and involvement, became part of a safe and inclusive community, were given the opportunity to try varied practical activities, experienced personal development, and gained new motivation for school. Using basic psychological needs theory and recovery theory, it is found that the pupils experienced relatedness to other pupils and to the farmers, improved their social and practical competence, and experienced autonomy (self-determination) through voluntary participation. The farmers and the community can be described as autonomy-supportive and “restitution-nourishing” and as contributing to personal development and the development of inner motivation. This strengthened the pupilsʼ self-confidence, hope for the future, and their attention in and efforts at school. The findings from the study indicate that motivation developed in one learning context (the farm) can influence the motivation for another context (ordinary school).Ungdomsskoleelevers erfaringer med gård-skole-tilbud som alternativ læringsarena i Norge: Konsekvenser for indre motivasjon og personlig utviklingpublishedVersio
Circulation responses to surface heating and implications for polar amplification
A seminal study by Hoskins and Karoly (1981) explored the atmospheric circulation response to tropospheric heating perturbations at low latitudes and midlatitudes. Here we revisit and extend their study by investigating the circulation and temperature response to low, middle, and high latitude surface heating using an idealised moist grey radiation model. Our results corroborate previous findings showing that heating perturbations at low latitudes and midlatitudes are balanced by different time-mean circulation responses – upward motion and horizontal-temperature advection, respectively. Transient eddy heat flux divergence plays an increasingly important role with latitude, becoming the main circulation response at high latitudes. However, this mechanism is less efficient at balancing heating perturbations than temperature advection, leading to greater reliance on an additional contribution from radiative cooling. These dynamical and radiative adjustments promote stronger lower-tropospheric warming in response to surface heating at high latitudes compared to lower latitudes. This elucidates the mechanisms by which sea ice loss contributes to polar amplification in a warming climate.publishedVersio
Remote Sensing Insights into Land Cover Dynamics and Socio-Economic Drivers:The Case of Mtendeli Refugee Camp, Tanzania (2016-2022)
The purpose of this article is to present the scope and the dynamics of the environmental changes unfolded in the vicinity of Mtendeli refugee camp. It presents a new method, which combines geospatial analysis of high-resolution Earth observation data (Sentinel-1&2) with ground-based observations and input from local experts. Time series classifications of annual land use/land cover in the surroundings of the camp is developed from remote data. Subsequently main transitions and trends are quantitatively achieved. This is a first study which, not only treats the land transition process in a comprehensive manner, but also tracks the changes and their main drivers on an annual scale over the lifetime of the camp (2016–2021) and the post-closure situation in 2022. Most importantly, thanks to the involvement of social studies, it unfolds the socio-economical drivers of those changes. Drawing upon a random forest algorithm and available databases, we achieve overall classification accuracies of 83.5% (2020) and 82.0% (2022). Our findings indicate an ongoing expansion of cropland between 2016 and 2021, to the detriment of natural vegetation classes. The impact of environmental restoration programs implemented in the former camp area is visible by 2022. The proposed method can be used to identify areas of environmental risk and thus support decisions linked with sustainable development and land management.Remote Sensing Insights into Land Cover Dynamics and Socio-Economic Drivers:The Case of Mtendeli Refugee Camp, Tanzania (2016-2022)publishedVersio
