Business models for electrification of Service Operation Vessels: Enabling decarbonized offshore wind maritime operations

This report takes a research-based approach to investigate and evaluate relevant business models for commercial maritime operation, based on offshore charging, especially linked to offshore wind installations. More specifically, we propose five distinct business models that can operationalize offshore charging of Service operation vessels (SOVs) involved in Offshore wind operations and maintenance (O&M). Each model is analyzed against technical feasibility, market applicability, and stakeholder alignment across different national regulatory regimes. Special consideration is given to OW ownership models across different national markets and their implications for pricing model, infrastructure deployment, and contractual set-up.Business models for electrification of Service Operation Vessels: Enabling decarbonized offshore wind maritime operationspublishedVersio

    Forbrukerfleksibilitet

Health-aware energy management for multiple stack hydrogen fuel cell and battery hybrid systems

Fuel cell (FC)/battery hybrid systems have attracted substantial attention for achieving zero-emissions buses, trucks, ships, and planes. An online energy management system (EMS) is essential for these hybrid systems, it controls energy flow and ensures optimal system performance. Key aspects include fuel efficiency and mitigating FC and battery degradation. This paper proposes a health-aware EMS for FC and battery hybrid systems with multiple FC stacks. The proposed EMS employs mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) to control each FC stack in the hybrid system independently, i.e., MIQP-based individual stack control (ISC), with significant fuel cost reductions, FC and battery degradations. The proposed method is compared with classical dynamic programming (DP), with a 2243 times faster computational speed than the DP method while maintaining near-optimal performance. The case study results show that ISC achieves a 64.68 % total cost reduction compared to CSC in the examined scenario, with substantial reductions across key metrics including battery degradation (4 %), hydrogen fuel consumption (22 %), fuel cell idling loss (99 %), and fuel cell load-change loss (41 %).publishedVersio

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of non-Newtonian fluids in annular geometries

A lattice Boltzmann scheme is introduced to model the interaction between a drill string and a non-Newtonian drilling fluid, as fluid–drill–string interactions can give significant force contributions on the drill string. The method uses a fast look-up-table approach to include non-Newtonian rheological behavior. In addition, an immersed boundary method was developed to model the interaction between the fluid and the drill string. The method is used on both Newtonian and Quemada fluids for a prescribed drill-string motion. The analysis of the simulations shows that the fluid viscosity had less influence on the integrated forces from the fluid on the drill string, for fairly rapid changes in the drill string center of mass movement, than on the integrated torque on the drill string. A comparison between a quasi two dimensional radial annular geometry and a true three dimensional annular geometry was conducted for a Quemada fluid. Also here we observed that the differences were most pronounced in the integrated torque measurements. The fluid motion is complex, but there is a noticeable correlations between the drill-string kinetics and the integrated forces and torques acting on the drill string from the fluid. And, even though this model is too computational demanding to be used in real-time drilling operations, it will make a good basis for data driven reduced order methods that can be used in actual real time applications.publishedVersio

    Austefjordvassdraget - Habitatkartlegging i 2021-2022

Austefjordvassdraget - Habitatkartlegging i 2021-2022publishedVersio

    Federated Learning in Aquaculture

The aquaculture industry faces significant challenges that require innovative solutions, particularly when dealing with sensitive data and the need for collaboration between competitors. AquaCloud AS has played a key role in standardizing data collection and facilitating data sharing across the industry. By developing standards for sensor data, fish health data, and environmental data, AquaCloud ensures that information is collected and reported consistently. Given the sensitivity of some of the data, it is crucial to utilize AquaCloud's resources safely. Federated machine learning offers a promising approach by enabling collaborative data analysis while maintaining data privacy and security. This secure sharing of models and learning from the unique AquaCloud centralized data platform, while data remains distributed, not only maintains privacy but also provides individual fish farmers with access to a broader dataset. By having access to more comprehensive data, than governance limitations dictates, fish farmers can make better-informed decisions, optimize their operations, and improve fish health and welfare. This method would also open AquaCloud insights to benchmarking and product fit evaluation for external actors. In this report, we prove that the method is applicable to AquaCloud and demonstrate how federated learning can improve model performance in the aquaculture industry based on AquaCloud data. The report describes the foundation for how a non-invasive platform can be implemented to yield flexible and secure collaborative model training. Implementing such infrastructure for federated learning have the potential to increase industry collaboration and generate significant value, driving advancements in fish health, operational efficiency, and overall sustainability.Federated Learning in AquaculturepublishedVersio

Effects and opportunities of a long-range drone base at Andøya

The possible establishment of a base at Andøya for large drones represents a significant step in strengthening Norway’s defense capabilities and NATO’s operational reach in the High North. Andøya’s strategic location near the Arctic and the North Atlantic makes it an ideal hub for long-range surveillance and intelligence gathering, particularly in an era of increased geopolitical tensions and military activity in the region. In the 2024 Long-Term Defense Plan, the Norwegian government confirmed that Andøya Air Station will remain active, serving as a drone base by 2029. Large long-range surveillance drones will enhance maritime domain awareness, working alongside Norway’s P-8 Poseidon aircraft operating out of Evenes Air Station and complementing NATO’s broader surveillance efforts. The planned drone base at Andøya also aligns with Norway’s commitment to deterring aggression, securing maritime interests, and maintaining allied interoperability in the North. Beyond national defense, Andøya’s role could expand within NATO’s surveillance network as home to a NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) base. This would provide greater intelligence-sharing and operational coordination between Norwegian and allied forces, and further integrating Norway into NATO’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) architecture. The proposed Unmanned Center of Excellence (CoE) at Andøya could serve as a hub for R&D, workforce development, and technological development, fostering deeper collaboration between defense, industry, and academic institutions. Lessons from Northrop Grumman’s GrandSky CoE in the US could accelerate this process, ensuring Andøya becomes a key node in unmanned aerial operations. The introduction of Triton drones at Andøya thus not only bolsters Norway’s civilian maritime surveillance, military situational awareness and force projection but could also positions the country as a critical player in both Arctic security and NATO’s evolving defense posture, as well as the newly re-energized European defense industry.publishedVersio
