    Representations of the Miracle of Gerasene (or Swine) in Medieval Christian iconography

    İsa’nın mucizelerinden biri olan “Gadarini Mucizesi (veya Gerasene Demonu, Domuz Mucizesi)”, temeli İsa’nın insanları kötü ruhlardan kurtarması inancına dayanan ve Hristiyan ikonografisinde kendisine az da olsa yer bulmuş bir mucizedir. Mozaik, fresk, el yazması, fildişi olmak üzere farklı malzemeden farklı dönemlerde üretilmiş az sayıda eserde tespit edilen bu sahne, farklı ve dikkat çekici bir kompozisyona sahiptir. Sinoptik İncillerden Matta, Markos ve Luka İncillerinde anlatılan ve “Gadarene Domuzu Mucizesi, İsa’nın Gerazen Şeytanını Kovması, Cine Tutulmuş Adamı Kurtarması, Domuz Mucizesi” gibi farklı biçimlerde adlandırılan bu mucizenin görsel sanatlara aktarımında birkaç küçük farklılık olsa da genel bir kompozisyon mevcuttur. “Gadarini Mucizesi” sahnesinin şeytan çıkarma sahneleriyle benzerliği güçlüdür ancak şeytan çıkarma sahnelerinde Şeytan, İsa’ya direnip bedeni terk etmek istemezken Gadarini Mucizesi’nde kötü ruhun kendisi de bedeni terk etme eğilimindedir. Mucizede kötü ruhlar insan bedenini terk edip domuzlara geçerek denize ilerler. Orta Çağ eserleriyle sınırlandırdığımız çalışmamız kapsamında bu anlatıyı temel alan, ikonografik açıdan 4 farklı kompozisyon biçimi belirlenmiştir.Bunların ilkinde Markos İncilini esas alarak İsa tek başına veya peygamberleriyle, kötü ruhun ele geçirdiği bir kişi tasvir edilmiştir. Louvre Müzesinde bulunan bir fildişi diptikon, Ravenna, Aziz Apollinare in Nuovo Kilisesinde bulunan bir mozaik panel ve III .Otto İncili bu kompozisyonun en iyi örneklerindendir. İkinci kompozisyonda, Luka İnciline uygun olarak kötü ruhun etkisi altındaki kişinin başında bir nöbetçiyle tasvir edilmiştir. Magdeburg Panelleri arasında bu uygulama görülmektedir. Matta İncilini esas alarak kötü ruhun etkisinde olan iki kişinin tasvir edildiği bir diğer kompozisyona bir örnek ise Kosova, Decani de bulunan Visoki Decani Manastırı freskoları arasında yer almaktadır. Ayrıca Luka ve Markos İncillerinin sentezini yansıtan ve T’oros Roslin incili minyatürlerinde karşımıza çıkan farklı daha kalabalık kompozisyona sahip betimlemeler de saptanmıştır. Çalışmamız sonucunda, zaman içinde Gadarini Mucizesi sahnelerinin azaldığını, şeytan çıkarma sahnelerinin ise giderek artığını söylemek mümkündür.One of the Miracles of Jesus is “Miracle of Gerasene (or Gerasene Demoniac, Miracle of Swine)” and it is based on the belief that Jesus saves people from demons and this miracle has found a place in Christian iconography. This scene, which is illustrated in a small number of artworks produced in different periods in different materials such as manuscripts, mosaics, frescoes and ivory, has an interesting and remarkable composition. Although there are a few minor differences in the depictions of this miracle, which is described in the Synoptic Gospels, (Matthew (8: 28-34), Markos (5: 1-20) and Luke (8: 26-39)) and named in different ways such as “The Miracle of the Gadarene Swine, Jesus’ Exorcism of the Gerazen Demon, the Rescue of the Demon-Possessed Man, the Miracle of Swine”, there is a general composition in all these artworks. The similarity between the Gerasene Miracle and the exorcism rituals is observed, but whereas in the exorcism scenes Satan resists Jesus and does not want to leave the body, in the Gerasene Miracle the demon/evil spirit itself tends to leave the body. In the miracle, the demon leaves the human body, possesses the swine and moves towards the sea. In this study, which is limited to medieval works, four different iconographic compositions based on the Bible have been identified. The first one of these, based on the Gospel of Mark, depicts Jesus alone or with his prophets, possessed by an evil spirit. An ivory diptych from the Louvre Museum, a mosaic panel from the Church of St. Apollinare in Nuovo, Ravenna, and the Gospel of Otto III are among the best examples of this composition. In the second composition, as narrated in the Gospel of Luke, the person under the influence of the evil spirit is depicted with a guard at his head. This scene is seen in the Magdeburg Panels. Another example of Gerasene Demoniac depicting two possessed people, based on the Gospel of Matthew, can be found among the frescoes of the Visoci Dečani Monastery in Dečani, Kosovo. Furthermore, depictions have different details in more crowded compositions reflecting a synthesis of the Gospels of Luke and Mark have also been identified, appearing in the miniatures of the T’oros Roslin Gospel. As a result of our study, it is possible to say that over time, scenes depicting the Miracle of Swine have decreased, while scenes depicting exorcism have gradually increased

    Risks to the growth, conservation and management of the Ural Saiga population

    The Ural saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) inhabits the expansive steppes and deserts of Kazakhstan. Disease outbreaks, particularly among livestock, can impact saiga populations by causing competition for resources and increasing mortality rates. This study focuses on the risks faced by the saiga population in Western Kazakhstan, along with strategies for their conservation and effective management. The research and data collection were conducted in the Kaztalov, Zhangala, Bokeyorda, and Zhanybek districts of West Kazakhstan, in the natural habitat and migration range of the Ural saiga population. To thoroughly assess the potential risks, we undertook a detailed analysis involving multiple data points, which encompassed monitoring, necropsy, microorganism isolation, and an examination of existing records between the years 2011 and 2024. By the conclusion of our study, we organized the identified risks into three distinct categories: biotic factors, abiotic factors, and anthropogenic factors. As a result of the evaluations made according to the categories, pathogenic bacteria (Pasteurella multocida, Clostridium perfringens), helminths, and ticks were identified as biotic risks; natural and climatic conditions (storms and lightning) as abiotic risks; and poaching and human practices in the fields as anthropogenic risks. This organization allowed us to clearly identify the specific risks faced by antelopes, providing insights that can inform future conservation efforts

    Adhesives exhibit multifaceted functionalities beyond adhesion as improving acoustic performance by reducing motion of parts, filling gaps, and facilitating homogeneous stress distribution. The expandable nature of certain adhesives allows them to absorb and dissipate energy effectively, which is beneficial in applications requiring impact resistance. The objectives of this study are acoustic performance measurement by utilizing Oberst and Frequency Response Function (FRF) methods to evaluate the damping capabilities of various rubber-based thermally expandable adhesive formulations; mechanical strength assessment by measuring the lap shear strength to determine the adhesives' performance under different operational temperatures; pore structure analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to analyze pore morphology and to investigate its effects on acoustic performance. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis was conducted to evaluate the thermal properties of rubber adhesive formulations. Glass transition temperatures were determined for the adhesives to understand behavior of damping during the Oberst and FRF tests. Pore structures, amounts, and distribution affected damping behavior of materials directly, but these properties did not cause a reduction on lap shear separtion strength. Operating temperatures and aging conditions affect damping behavior, Young modulus, and adhesion. Salt spray aging did not have significant effect on lap shear strength of rubber adhesive formulations

    Diving into the depths: Unveiling the main etiologies of piscine lactococcosis with a novel multiplex qPCR assay

    Piscine lactococcosis poses a significant threat to a wide range of cultured and wild fish populations worldwide, typically presenting as acute haemorrhagic septicemia with high morbidity and mortality. Although Lactococcus garvieae was historically considered the sole causative agent of piscine lactococcosis, recent studies have identified L. petauri and L. formosensis as additional, highly pathogenic species. In this study, we developed a novel TaqMan-based multiplex qPCR assay for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of L. garvieae, L. petauri and L. formosensis, following a pangenome analysis of the publicly available genomes of these bacterial species. The assay demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity across 156 bacterial isolates obtained from various cultured fish species and geographical locations between 2008 and 2024, as well as against a panel of non-target bacteria. It also successfully detected target pathogens in 146 field tissue samples, including tissues preserved in 70% ethanol, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues and tissues fixed on FTA cards. Compared to classical bacteriology, the multiplex qPCR assay yielded higher detection rates and enabled precise identification of the causative species of piscine lactococcosis. Overall, the multiplex qPCR assay developed in this study provides a reliable, rapid, highly sensitive and species-specific molecular approach for diagnosing piscine lactococcosis, contributing to better surveillance and management of the disease in aquaculture

    The Glasgow Coma Scale has been a standard tool for assessing consciousness in trauma patients for five decades, but its utility is limited by the omission of brainstem reflexes such as pupillary response.This study aimed to compare the prognostic accuracy of the Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale (pGCS) and the Pediatric Glasgow Coma Scale - Pupils Score (pGCS-P) in predicting mortality and functional outcomes among pediatric patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This single-center observational cohort study was conducted from May 2022 to May 2023 at Bursa Training and Research Hospital, Health Sciences University, Turkey. Pediatric patients (age .05). In pediatric patients with TBI, the prognostic accuracy of the pGCS with pupil response (pGCS-P) was comparable to that of the pGCS alone for predicting mortality and UFOs. Incorporation of the pupil score did not significantly improve prognostic discrimination in this cohort

    Uridine treatment protects against blood-brain barrier disruption in a rat model of li-pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus

    Introduction Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption is one of the most striking changes triggered by status epilepticus, which deserves specific attention in terms of novel treatment approaches targeting epileptogenesis. Uridine is a pyrimidine nucleoside with neuroprotective, antiepileptic and antiepileptogenic effects; however, its mechanism of action is not fully characterized. In this study, we aimed to investigate the short-term outcomes of uridine treatment on status epilepticus-induced-BBB dysfunction in an animal model.Methods Status epilepticus was induced by lithium and pilocarpine administration in male Sprague-Dawley rats which were post-treated with intraperitoneal injection of saline or uridine (500 mg/kg b.w.; twice a day) for 2 days. Blood-brain barrier structural integrity was assessed by measuring expressions of endothelial tight junction proteins zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) and occludin, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel and its anchoring protein alpha 1-syntrophin in hippocampal tissue 48 h after SE. Additionally, BBB permeability was determined by measuring brain edema and serum S100B levels.Results The data showed that uridine significantly prevented the reduction in ZO-1 and alpha 1-syntrophin protein levels and attenuated serum S100B levels, indicating protective effects on BBB integrity and AQP4 polarization. In contrast, uridine enhanced brain water content in SE-induced rats, a finding that might be a result of maintained AQP4 polarization and enhanced cytotoxic edema.Discussion Together, our results showed for the first time that post-seizure treatment with uridine provides protection against BBB disruption in an experimental SE model; nevertheless, the long-term effects of this treatment warrant further investigation

    Bu metin, uygarlık tarihinde sonu gelmez tartışmalara yol açan temel olgulardan biri olan eğitim üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Tezin amacı, bu kadim meseleyi felsefi ve sosyolojik tarihi kontekst içinde ele almak; güncel eğitim problemlerini tespit etmek ve bu problemlerin aşılabilirliğini tartışmaya açmaktır. Eğitim, hem geçmişte hem de günümüzde bir fetiş nesnesine dönüşmüş; insanın ancak eğitim yoluyla “tam” olabileceği düşüncesi, giderek daha fazla kabul görmüştür. Bu olumlamanın kökenlerini anlamak, eğitimin neden bu denli yüceltilip vazgeçilmez kılındığını sorgulamak gereklidir. Eğitim kurumunun bu düzeyde muteberleşmesini sağlayan tarihsel ve sosyolojik dinamiklerin izini sürmek, aynı zamanda eğitimin kendisinin bir ihtilaf konusu olduğunu fark etmeyi de mümkün kılar, zira insanın ne olduğu sorusu tarih boyunca sürekli tartışılmışken, insanın nasıl eğitileceği sorusu da doğası gereği problemli olmuştur. Geleneksel toplumlar eğitimi ağırlıklı olarak değerlerin ve ahlakın aktarımı olarak görmüştür. Modern dönemle birlikte ise eğitim, bireyi disipline eden ve sisteme uyumlu hâle getiren bir araç olarak yeniden tanımlanmıştır. Günümüzde ise bu işlevlerin ötesine geçilmiş; eğitim, piyasanın hedeflerine hizmet eden ikincil bir faaliyet alanına indirgenmiştir. Piyasa eğitimi olarak adlandırılan bu dönüşüm, eğitimin günümüz koşullarında neden bir problem alanı olarak ele alınması gerektiğini açık biçimde göstermektedir.This study focuses on education, one of the most enduring and contentious phenomena in the history of civilization. The aim of the thesis is to examine this longstanding issue within its philosophical and sociological-historical context, to identify contemporary educational problems, and to open a discussion on whether these problems can be overcome. Education has increasingly become a fetishized object, both historically and in the present; the belief that one can only become a “complete” human being through education has gained widespread acceptance. Understanding the roots of this valorization requires questioning why education has been so highly exalted and rendered indispensable. Tracing the historical and sociological dynamics that have endowed educational institutions with such prestige also reveals that education itself is a site of conflict. After all, as long as the nature of the human being remains contested, the question of how to educate the human becomes inherently problematic. In traditional societies, education was primarily conceived as the transmission of values and morality. With the advent of modernity, however, education was redefined as a mechanism for disciplining the individual and ensuring conformity to the system. In contemporary times, education has moved beyond these roles and has been reduced to a secondary activity that serves the goals of the market. This transformation—commonly referred to as “market-driven education”—clearly illustrates why education must today be treated as a problematic domain

    Legume and nut flours from the mediterranean area: Proximate compositions, techno-functionalities, and spectroscopy patterns as a function of species, origin, and treatment

    This study systematically evaluates proximate composition, color, techno-functionalities, and spectroscopy patterns of 19 legume and 16 nut commercial flours of the Mediterranean area. Effect of species, origin, and treatment were analyzed using a Generalized Linear Model. Except for legume proteins, species and origin significantly (p <= 0.001) affected flour composition, while heat treatment only had a significant effect (p <= 0.05) on nuts. A large variability was observed in fats (0.6-69 g/100g) and proteins (3.7-36 g/100g), and the FT-IR spectra reflected the 35-flours composition. Principal component model clearly distinguished flours based on their carbohydrate, fat, and protein contents. For legumes, color indices, bulk density, and emulsifying properties were significantly affected by species, origin, and treatment, while foaming properties were influenced only by species. For nuts, oil absorption capacity, emulsion properties, and foaming properties were significantly affected by species, origin, and treatment. The origin had a significant effect on water retention capacity (40-433 %) of nuts.
