    Green and on-time scheduling in real-world textile production: A genetic algorithm approach validated by mip and benchmarked with aco

    This study presents two batch-scheduling models: one minimising carbon footprint and another reducing finishing time plus tardiness. Batch scheduling is frequently used in textile, semiconductor, and chemical industries to group items, optimise throughput, and limit resource consumption. In textile dyeing, large water and energy demands make carbon reduction and on-time delivery essential goals. For MIP, GA, and ACO, the classical dual-objective form-total tardiness + total finishing time-is reformulated as a single carbon-footprint objective and then benchmarked against the two-objective versions. Exact MIP solutions on small instances validate the performance of both GA and ACO; medium-sized data sets enable a direct GA-ACO comparison, and GA's superior results motivate its exclusive use on large-scale scenarios. On the real factory data the carbon-aware GA, relative to its time-based counterpart, cuts total CO 2 _2 2 by 55%, reduces total tardiness by 66%, and raises average utilisation from 63.6% to 75%. A paired t-test over eleven data sets confirms that the CO 2 _2 2 reduction is statistically significant at the 95% confidence level, with no service-level degradation. All large instances are solved within minutes on laptop hardware, demonstrating that the proposed approach delivers sustainability and operational performance simultaneously

    Evaluation of complementary and alternative medicine use in cancer patients: A survey study in Turkey

    Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of cancer patients using complementary medicine (CM) and determine possible herb-drug interactions. Methods: We prepared a questionnaire about CM, that included questions about the frequency of CM use, the reasons for using CM, if there was any side effect, CM's cost, the patient's expectations of CM, whether the following doctor was aware of the patient's CM use, and whether it should be paid for by health insurance, and asked patients to fill it out at the chemotherapy unit. Socio-demographic characteristics and medical data of patients including cancer type, stage, and current treatment protocol were also noted. The data was analyzed using SPSS Statics version 26. Results: 245 patients participated in the study. The prevalence of CM use was 34.7 %. The median number of herbal supplements used per patient was 3. CM users were younger [CM user group mean age 54.74 (± 12.17), CM non-user group mean age 58.07 (± 12.70), p = 0.04]. No other significant difference was found between the CM users and CM non-users. The majority of patients used Propolis (40 %), Curcuma longa (38.8 %), and Nigella sativa (32.9 %). 72.9 % of patients were using CM to complement chemotherapy's efficacy by boosting immunity; 58.8 % were using it to mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy, 34.1 % to treat cancer, and 2.4 % to prevent recurrence. 94.1 % of CM users declared that they were satisfied with CM, 7 patients (8.2 %) reported side effects such as cutaneous side effects (4), diarrhea (2), and elevated liver function tests (1). 41.2 % of CM users continued CM during chemotherapy and 64 possible CM-drug interactions were identified. Conclusions: CM may be nonharmful and efficient but may also be detrimental because of drug interactions. Physicians should not ignore CM and patients should better be informed about CM by healthcare providers

    Cultural heritage and the transfer of intangible cultural heritage through museums

    Geçmiş kuşaklar tarafından oluşturulan ve evrensel değerleri olduğuna inanılan eserler genel olarak “kültürel miras” olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Kültürel miraslar sadece ait olduğu toplum için değil, tüm insanlık için korunması gereken değerlerdir. Bu konuya dikkat çekmek için tez konusu “Kültürel Miras ve Somut Olmayan Kültürel Mirasın Müzeler Aracılığıyla Aktarımı” olarak seçilmiştir. İlk bölüm başlığı olan “Kültürel Miras” bölümünde kültürel mirasın insanlık için önemine ve kısa adı UNESCO olan Birleşmiş Milletler, Eğitim, Bilim ve Kültür Kurumu’nun kurulduğu günden itibaren kültürel mirasın korunması için yaptığı uluslararası düzenlemelere ve sözleşmelere dikkat çekilmiştir. UNESCO tarafından ilk olarak korumaya değer görülen kültürel varlıklar, somut kültürel miraslar olmuştur. Kültürel mirasların güvencesi olarak kabul edilen ve tarihte koleksiyonculukla şekillenen müzecilik, 18. yüzyıldan itibaren Batı’nın koleksiyonlarını topluma açmasıyla birlikte belli bir sistem çevresinde toplanmayı gerektirmiştir. 19. ve 20. yüzyıl boyunca da hızlı bir değişim ve gelişim sürecine girmiştir. Türkiye’de ise 19. yüzyılın “Batılılaşma çabalarının göstergesi olan çağdaş bir kurum” olarak ortaya çıkan müzeler, öncelikle kültürel mirası ve zengin tarihi “korumayı” hedeflemişlerdir. Türkiye’de müzelerin kurumsallaşma süreciyle ilgili olan bu tespit Türk müzecilik uygulamalarının da şekillenmesini etkileyen “Batılılaşmanın göstergesi çağdaş bir kurum olma” ve “koruma” kavramlarının da önemini vurgulamaktadır. Tez çalışmasının ikinci bölümü “Müzecilik” bölümünde de Batılılaşma sürecinin, Türk müzeciliği ve müzecilik uygulamalarının şekillenmesindeki etkisi vurgulanmış ve çağdaş müzecilik yaklaşımında “müze eğitiminin” önemine dikkat çekilmiştir. Somut kültürel mirasın korunmaya alınmasından sonra gelenekler, ritüeller, el sanatları gibi somut olmayan kültürel mirasların korunması içinde 2003 yılında UNESCO tarafından “Somut Olmayan Kültürel Mirasın Korunması Sözleşmesi” kabul edilmiştir. Tezin üçüncü bölümü olan “Somut Olmayan Kültürel Miras ve Müzecilik” bölümünde de sözleşmenin “koruma” kavramına dikkat çekilerek, somut olmayan kültürel mirasların müzeyle olan ilişkileri bu “koruma” kavramı üzerinden yorumlanmış ve müzelerin koruma yaklaşımındaki değişimler ele alındıktan sonra somut olmayan kültürel miras unsurlarının korunması ve bu alanda farkındalık yaratılması için “eğitim” ve “müzelerin eğitim işlevleri”, “müze eğitimi” üzerinden yorumlanmıştır. Müze ve müze eğitimi ile uyguladıkları programlar, projeler ve faaliyetler kapsamında “İyi Koruma Uygulamaları Listesi”ne giren: • Pusol Okul Müzesi’nin • Batik Müzesi’nin • Fandango’nun Yaşayan Müzesi’nin ve • Batàna Ekomüzesi’nin “müze eğitim çalışmaları” ele alındıktan sonra Türkiye’den de: • Ankara Somut Olmayan Kültürel Miras Müzesi “müze eğitim çalışmaları” açısından çözümlenmiştir. Müzelerin, müze eğitimi dışında okullarla iş birliği yaparak çalışabileceği başka bir yöntem olan, müze eğitimi çalışmalarıyla, öğretim programlarının birleştirilmesi kapsamında, somut olmayan kültürel miras unsurlarının küçük yaşlardan itibaren çocuklara aktarılabilmesi için Türkiye’den örnek olarak: • Halk Kültürü Dersi’nin ve • Sosyal Bilgiler Dersi’nin önemine dikkat çekilmiştir.Artifacts created by past generations and believed to have universal values are generally defined as “cultural heritage”. Cultural heritages are values that should be protected not only for the society to which they belong, but for all humanity. In order to draw attention to this issue, the thesis topic was chosen as “Cultural Heritage and the Transfer of Intangible Cultural Heritage Through Museums”. In the section “Cultural Heritage”, the title of the first chapter, the importance of cultural heritage for humanity and the international regulations and conventions that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Institution, whose short name is UNESCO, has made for the protection of cultural heritage since the day it was founded, have been drawn attention to. The cultural assets that were first considered worthy of protection by UNESCO have become tangible cultural heritages. Museology, which is accepted as the guarantee of cultural heritages and shaped by collecting in history, 18. since the beginning of the century, with the opening of the West's collections to society, it has required gathering around a certain system. 19. and 20. it has also entered into a rapid process of change and development throughout the century. The second part of the thesis, “Museology” section, also emphasized the impact of the westernization process on the formation of Turkish museology and museology practices, and drew attention to the importance of museum education in the contemporary museology approach. After the protection of the tangible cultural heritage, the Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in intangible cultural heritage such as traditions, rituals, handicrafts was adopted by UNESCO in 2003. In the third part of the thesis, “Intangible Cultural Heritage and Museology”, the concept of “protection” of the agreement is emphasized, the relations of intangible cultural heritage with the museum are interpreted through this concept of “protection” and after considering the changes in the Conservation approach of museums, “education” and “educational functions of museums” are interpreted through “museum education” in order to protect intangible cultural heritage elements and create awareness in this area. Within the scope of museum and museum education and the programs, projects and activities they implement, the following that are included in the “Good Safeguarding Practices List”: • Pusol School Museum • Batik Museum • Fandango’s Living Museum and • Batàna Ecomuseum are discussed and then from Turkey: • Ankara Intangible Cultural Heritage Museums is analyzed in terms of “museum education”. Within the scope of combining museum education studies with teaching programs, which is another method that museums can work in collaboration with schools outside of museums education, the importance of intangible cultural heritage elements to be conveyed to children from a young age, as an examples from Turkey: • Folk Culture Course and • Social Studies Course were emphasized

    Advancing energy efficiency: Machine learning based forecasting models for integrated power systems in food processing company

    The increasing energy demand and costs in the industrial sector necessitate effective energy management strategies. This study investigates a food processing company with an on-site cogeneration system, which faces challenges of high energy costs and fluctuating energy demand due to its seasonal production. During off-peak seasons, surplus energy is generated and frequently sold at reduced rates, thereby increasing operational inefficiencies. Conversely, during on-peak seasons, the company faces heightened energy demands and increased costs, further complicating energy management and impacting overall operational effectiveness. To address these challenges, an energy consumption forecasting model (ECFM) has been developed which employs Quantile Regression (QR) as a statistical method and different machine learning (ML) algorithms, including Decision Trees (DT), Boosted Trees, Bagged Trees, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Although QR is an effective method for handling non-normally distributed data, it is inadequate for capturing the high volatility of energy consumption in this study. Among the ML models, the bi-layered ANN demonstrated the most effective performance achieving the lowest forecasting errors and demonstrating a 52.42% reduction in CO2 emissions. This reduction is consistent with the company's decarbonization strategies and regulatory compliance goals. The findings highlight the potential of advanced ML models, particularly the bi-layered ANN, to enhance the accuracy of energy forecasting, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create competitive advantages in industrial settings. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the integration of operational efficiency with environmental sustainability in energy management practices. It demonstrates the potential of advanced forecasting models to support the development of robust and sustainable energy solutions across a range of industrial contexts

    Türkçenin yabancı dil olarak öğretiminde özel gereksinimli öğrenciler: Duyuşsal ve öğretimsel zorluklar

    Individuals with special needs, despite being active participants in social life, are often marginalized in the second or foreign language learning process. This study addresses this gap by examining teachers' experiences instructing learners with special needs in Turkish as a foreign language. These experiences are essential for developing an inclusive foreign language teaching process and serve as an effective roadmap for identifying the educational needs of individuals with special needs and the necessary interventions. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological research design and involves ten teachers selected through criterion sampling. These teachers share the common characteristics of working with students with special needs learning Turkish as a foreign language. In the study, teacher experiences were analyzed across six themes: diagnosis of students with special needs, emotional states of students with special needs, obstacles encountered by instructors during the teaching process, classroom environment and peer relations, obstacles faced by students with special needs during instruction, and instructor suggestions. The findings reveal that the teachers were eager to develop professionally, highly motivated to teach, sensitive to differences, and possessed diverse skill sets. However, they faced significant challenges, including difficulties in diagnosing students with invisible disabilities, managing classrooms, sourcing or creating appropriate materials, planning specialized instruction for various disabilities, and conducting effective assessments and evaluations. Besides, these teachers reported insufficient academic and administrative support to help them to address these challenges.Özel gereksinimli bireyler, toplumsal yaşamın aktif katılımcıları olmalarına karşın ikinci/yabancı dil öğrenme sürecinde sesleri duyulmayan gruplardan birisidir. Bu nedenle çalışmada, özel gereksinimli bireylere yabancı dil (Türkçe) öğreten öğreticilerin deneyimlerine odaklanılmıştır. Çünkü kapsayıcı bir yabancı dil öğretimi sürecinin yapılandırılmasında önemli bir aktör olan öğretici deneyimleri, özel gereksinimli bireylerin eğitim ihtiyaçlarının tespiti ve yapılacak müdahale için etkili bir yol haritası sunar. Fenomenolojik desen ile yürütülen bu nitel çalışma, ölçüt örnekleme tekniği kullanılarak seçilen on öğreticiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu öğreticilerin ortak özelliği, sınıfında yabancı dil olarak Türkçe öğrenen özel gereksinimli öğrencilerle çalışmalarıdır. Araştırmada öğretici deneyimleri; özel gereksinimli öğrencileri tanılama, özel gereksinimli öğrencilerin duygusal durumları, öğreticilerin öğretim sürecinde karşılaştığı engeller, sınıf ortamı ve akran ilişkileri, özel gereksinimli öğrencilerin öğretim sürecinde karşılaştığı engeller ve öğretici önerileri olmak üzere altı temada incelenmiştir. Bulgulardan hareketle deneyimlerine başvurulan öğreticilerin özel gereksinimli bireylere yabancı dil öğretiminde mesleki açıdan gelişmeye istekli, öğretme konusunda büyük bir motivasyona sahip, farklılıklara duyarlı ve çok yönlü profile sahip oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Buna karşın başta görünmez engelliler olan özel gereksinimli öğrenciyi tanılayabilme, sınıf yönetimi, engel türüne göre materyal bulma veya hazırlama, engel türüne yönelik özel öğretimi planlama, ölçme değerlendirme gibi birçok konuda da zorluk yaşadıkları ve bu zorlukları aşmak için hem akademik açıdan hem yönetimden yeterli desteğin alınamadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır

    The potential role of egg-derived xeno-mirs in chemotherapy response: An in silico approach

    Exogenous microRNAs (Xeno-miRs), primarily derived from dietary sources, are detectable in host biofluids and influence gene expression through cross-kingdom regulation. Despite growing interest, their impact on human diseases, especially cancer, remains controversial and requires further investigation. However, the specific implications of diet-derived Xeno-miRs in chemotherapy response remain largely unexplored. This study assesses the potential functions and possible implications of egg-derived miRNAs in chemotherapy response with an in silico approach. This study presents the first evaluation of the contribution of diet-derived miRNAs in modulating chemotherapy outcomes. Egg-derived miRNAs were retrieved from the Dietary MicroRNA Database, and their human homologs were identified. Target genes and transcription factors were predicted using mirDIP and TransmiR databases, respectively. Pathway enrichment analysis was conducted with DIANA-miRPath. Expression patterns of Xeno-miRs were analyzed using the CancerMIRNome database, and differentially expressed target genes were identified using TCGA and GTEx data via GEPIA2. The chemotherapy response of Xeno-miRs was assessed using ncRNADrug. Fifty-five egg-derived Xeno-miRs were initially retrieved, among which 17 human homologs were further analyzed. Notably, the downregulation of hsa-miR-30a-5p and hsa-miR-146a-5p was associated with increased sensitivity to fluorouracil and oxaliplatin, whereas the overexpression of hsa-miR-22-3p and hsa-miR-200a-3p was linked to resistance against testosterone and bortezomib (p = 2 or <= -2). This study provides in silico evidence for the role of dietary miRNAs in chemotherapy response, paving the way for their translational application in nutrition-based cancer management strategies. Further experimental studies are required to quantify their bioavailability post-digestion and to characterize their cellular uptake mechanisms

    Determination of the relationship between the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) gene and fertility parameters in mares

    Bu çalışmada, dişi Arap atlarında Anti Müllerian Hormon (AMH) üretiminden sorumlu genin sekans analizi yapılmış ve nükleotid değişimlerinin hormon seviyesi ile reprodüktif parametreler üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla, 216 damızlık Arap kısraktan aşım sezonunda bir defaya mahsus kan numunesi alınmış, DNA izolasyonu ve AMH ölçümü gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yeni Nesil Dizileme (NGS) metodu ile genotiplendirme yapılarak elde edilen genetik veriler geniş bir reprodüktif veri setiyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Kısrakların yaş ortalaması 9,9 ± 0,3 yıl, ilk damızlık yaşı ortalaması 5,6 ± 0,1 yıl, kayıtlı yavru sayısı ortalaması 3,2 ± 0,2, sezon başı folikül çapı ortalaması 32,34 ± 0,7 mm, preovulatör folikül çapı ise 47,4 ± 0,3 mm olarak belirlenmiştir. Ortalama serum AMH konsantrasyonu 2,2 ± 1,1 ng/mL olarak saptanmıştır. Sezon sonu gebelik oranı %81,4; canlı tay doğum oranı %63,7, ikizlik oranı ise %5,6 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Gebeliği etkileyen faktörler arasında AMH seviyesi (p=0,034), sezon içi siklus sayısı (p=0,000) ve aşım sayısı (p=0,000) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur. AMH geninde yer alan SNP’ler ile fertilite parametreleri arasında yeni ilişkiler belirlenmiştir. rs1141596514 ve rs1142569397 SNP’lerinin AMH seviyesini anlamlı şekilde etkilediği, rs3436158345 ve rs3443000461 SNP’lerinin ise fertilite oranını artırdığı gösterilmiştir. Ayrıca, rs3441387693 SNP’si preovulatör folikül çapıyla, rs1146975228 SNP’si ise sezon içi kayıplarla anlamlı ilişkilidir. Sonuçlar, AMH genine yönelik genetik analizlerin, kısrakların reprodüktif başarısını artırmak ve damızlık seçiminde kullanılabilecek yeni yaklaşımlar geliştirmek için yararlı olabileceğini göstermektedir. Bu çalışma, literatüre önemli katkılar sağlayarak bu alanda öncü bir niteliğe sahiptir.In this study, the sequencing analysis of the gene responsible for Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) production in female Arabian horses was performed, and the effects of nucleotide variations on hormone levels and reproductive parameters were examined. For this purpose, blood samples were collected once from 216 broodmare Arabian horses during the breeding season. DNA isolation and AMH measurements were conducted. Genotyping was performed using the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) method, and the genetic data were compared with a comprehensive reproductive dataset. The average age of the broodmares was 9.9 ± 0.3 years, with an average initial breeding age of 5.6 ± 0.1 years, an average number of registered foals of 3.2 ± 0.2, and an average follicle diameter at the beginning of the season of 32.1 ± 0.7 mm. The preovulatory follicle diameter was measured at 47.4 ± 0.3 mm. The average serum AMH concentration was 2.2 ± 1.1 ng/mL, with a range of 0.26 to 11.6 ng/mL. The end-of-season pregnancy rate was 81.4%, the live foal birth rate was 63.7%, and the twinning rate was 5.6%. Factors influencing pregnancy included AMH levels (p=0.034), the number of cycles within the season (p=0.000), and the number of matings (p=0.000), all of which were statistically significant. New relationships between SNPs in the AMH gene and fertility parameters were identified. SNPs rs1141596514 and rs1142569397 were found to significantly affect AMH levels, while SNPs rs3436158345 and rs3443000461 significantly increased fertility rates. Additionally, SNP rs3441387693 was significantly associated with preovulatory follicle diameter, and SNP rs1146975228 was significantly related to losses within the season. The results demonstrate that genetic analyses of the AMH gene can be valuable in enhancing the reproductive success of broodmares and developing new approaches to broodmare selection. This study contributes significantly to the literature and serves as a pioneering effort in this field

    Collision risk and mobility analysis of novice drivers on a highway based on real world data

    This study examines how novice driving behaviors affect highway flow and collision potential. Driving behaviors of candidates receiving driving training are analyzed for the first time using drone images, in-car footage, and image processing methods. Driving parameters such as standstill distance [CC0], acceleration/deceleration, perception-reaction times, and speeds are extracted using image processing and field observation. These novice driver (ND) parameters are then incorporated into the VISSIM traffic micro-simulation model as a separate driving behavior dataset. The impact of NDs on traffic under different compositions and the resulting crash potential is then assessed. Safety analysis using the Collision Potential Index (CPI) reveal a 35% increase in CPI with only 10% novice drivers, while mobility analysis indicates a 14% average speed decrease with 50% ND traffic composition. Interestingly, a decrease in CPI values is observed when the ND ratio increases to 40% and 50%, which is explained by the more cautious behavior of experienced drivers and a decrease in traffic flow speed. The use of real-world data increases the authenticity and reliability of the study. The findings contribute to the understanding of the risks associated with novice drivers, highlighting the need for effective safety measures. This study provides valuable insights for policy makers and traffic safety experts to reduce the threats posed by inexperienced drivers and regulate the behavior of experienced drivers

    Monitoring of immunoglobulin treatment compliance of patients with an inborn error of immunity during the pandemic period

    BackgroundDuring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, significant challenges have been encountered in managing patients with chronic diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the pandemic on follow-up and treatment adherence in patients receiving immunoglobulin replacement therapy (IRT).MethodsA study examining the changes in IRT application methods was conducted between March 2020 and September 2021. An online message line, under the control of nurses and doctors, was established for our patients, and their usage rates for this communication system were recorded.ResultsA total of 169 patients, 93 males and 76 females, were included in the study. Among the patients, 124 (73.4%) received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and 45 (26.6%) received subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIG) treatment. Male sex was more common in both the IVIG and SCIG groups. Although all patients in the subcutaneous treatment group continued the treatments regularly, this rate was 80.6% in the IVIG group. During the pandemic, 26 patients switched from IVIG to SCIG treatment. Furthermore, 24 patients interrupted immunoglobulin treatment for various reasons. Patients who received subcutaneous treatment took a long break from their hospital controls, although they applied them properly at home. Routine immunoglobulin trough values were measured in only 17 (37.7%) patients who were on SCIG. In the presence of symptoms, 100% of SCIG patients contacted the remote medical team via the online message line, compared to 48.3% of IVIG patients.ConclusionDuring the pandemic, the route of immunoglobulin treatment should be individualized based on each patient's characteristics and expectations. Telehealth services have emerged as a crucial tool for monitoring patients with chronic disorders, facilitating effective communication and personalized care
