The Effect of Health Promotion on Adolescents’ Knowledge Regarding Breast Self-Examination (BSE) at Trisakti Junior High School Lubuk Pakam in 2025

    No full text
Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality among women globally. Early detection through Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is an essential preventive measure to reduce the risk of late diagnosis. Nevertheless, the level of knowledge among adolescents regarding BSE is still relatively low, indicating the need for effective health promotion interventions to enhance understanding and foster positive attitudes toward early detection. Educational media-based health promotion is expected to improve adolescents’ awareness and encourage autonomous practices in performing BSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion delivered through leaflet and animated video media in improving adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding BSE in a junior high school setting. The research applied a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test–post-test approach. A total of 41 students from Trisakti Private Junior High School, Lubuk Pakam, participated as respondents. The intervention consisted of health education using leaflet and animated video media. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring knowledge, attitudes, and practices before and after the intervention. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was employed to analyze the significance of differences between pre- and post-intervention scores. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement across all measured variables, particularly in adolescents’ knowledge about BSE (p = 0.000). The mean knowledge score increased from 6.07 prior to the intervention to 7.44 afterward. Moreover, significant enhancements were also observed in attitudes and practices following the intervention. These results indicate that health promotion using leaflet and animated video media is effective in increasing adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward performing BSE. Continuous implementation of such educational programs is recommended to foster awareness and proactive health behavior among adolescents in early breast cancer detection

The Relationship Between the History of Providing Complementary Foods Under 6 Months and the Incidence of Stunting in Toddlers

    No full text
The health and well-being of infants throughout their lives are significantly influenced by adequate nutrition. Nutritional deficiencies, often associated with stunting, can negatively impact a child's physical growth, motor development, and cognitive abilities. Infants who receive complementary foods (MPASI) before 6 months of age are at higher risk of experiencing essential nutrient deficiencies. This study aims to determine the relationship between the history of MPASI provision under 6 months of age and the incidence of stunting in toddlers in the Lumpue Community Health Center (Puskesmas) work area. The method used was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The study population included all toddlers registered at the Lumpue Community Health Center in May 2025, totaling 97 children, with a sample size of 78 toddlers. The research instrument was a questionnaire, while data analysis used the chi-square test. The analysis results showed a p-value of 0.000, so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, there is a significant relationship between the provision of MPASI before 6 months of age and the incidence of stunting in toddlers. It is hoped that further research will be able to examine in more depth other factors such as the quality of complementary feeding, parenting patterns, and the role of health education in shaping the behavior of providing complementary feeding

This article aims to systematically review scientific evidence regarding the health benefits of pectin and its recommended consumption dosage. The method used is a literature review by collecting articles from various scientific databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed within the range of 2014–2024. The review findings indicate that pectin has positive effects in lowering LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose levels. Additionally, pectin shows potential as an anti-cancer agent through the inhibition of Galectin-3, as well as demonstrating immunomodulatory activity and a key role in maintaining gut health. Pectin has also been shown to be safe as a biomaterial based on cytotoxicity tests on human cell cultures. The recommended dosage of pectin varies depending on its intended use, with an effective range in humans between 15–30 grams per day. However, excessive intake may cause mild digestive discomfort such as bloating or gas; therefore, gradual consumption is advised. In conclusion, pectin holds great potential as a functional food component and therapeutic agent. Nevertheless, further research is needed to evaluate its effectiveness in human populations, determine optimal dosage, and explore its interactions with other dietary components. In addition, the development of high-bioavailability pectin-based products could be a strategic approach to maximizing its health benefits

    No full text
Background: Mental health problems are increasing among adolescents. One modifiable risk factor is diet, particularly the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF), which is notably high in this age group. Objective: This narrative review aims to summarize recent scientific evidence on the association between UPF consumption and the risk of mental health problems in adolescents. Methods: A literature search was conducted using two major databases (Google Scholar and PubMed) with the keywords (“ultra-processed food” OR “UPF”) AND (“adolescents” OR “teenagers” OR “youth”) AND (“depression” OR “anxiety” OR “mental health issues”). After a selection process involving title, abstract, and full-text screening, 11 articles were included in the narrative analysis, which involved identifying patterns, similarities, differences, and links between UPF consumption and adolescent mental health outcomes. Results: Most studies showed that high UPF consumption is associated with an increased risk of mental health issues among adolescents, including depression, anxiety, anxiety-induced sleep disturbance, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and reduced quality of life. Some studies reported varying results based on gender, assessment tools, and population characteristics. Conclusion: High consumption of UPF may be a potential risk factor for mental health problems in adolescents. Nutrition education and policies limiting UPF intake should be considered as part of preventive and promotive strategies for adolescent mental health. Further longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to strengthen causal evidence and evaluate the effectiveness of preventive efforts

Adolescent girls are in a developmental phase marked by the maturation of the reproductive system, one of which is indicated by the onset of menstruation. However, menstruation is often accompanied by dysmenorrhea, which may cause discomfort, reduce learning concentration, and interfere with school activities. Dysmenorrhea remains a prevalent reproductive health problem, including in North Sumatra Province. One safe, simple, and easily applicable non-pharmacological method to alleviate menstrual pain is the use of warm compresses, although adolescents’ knowledge and skills in applying this method correctly are still limited. This Community Service Program aimed to improve knowledge and skills and to reduce the intensity of dysmenorrhea through health education and hands-on practice of warm compress application. The activity was conducted at SMA Swasta Nusantara Lubuk Pakam and involved 10 female students experiencing dysmenorrhea, selected using purposive sampling. The program stages included a pretest, reproductive health education, demonstration, hands-on practice of warm compress application, and posttest evaluation. Instruments used comprised a participant characteristics questionnaire, a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain assessment, a knowledge questionnaire, and an observation checklist for skills evaluation. The results showed that the mean pain score decreased from 5.6 (moderate pain) to 2.2 (mild pain), indicating a reduction of 3.4 points. The proportion of participants with good knowledge increased from 30% to 80%, and all participants demonstrated improved understanding. In terms of skills, 80% of participants achieved a very good category and 20% a good category. These findings indicate that education combined with hands-on practice is an effective and feasible approach for managing dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls
