Without Latency: Cathode Immersions and the Neglected Practice of Xenocasting for Television and Radio
No full textThis paper discusses a three-year radio project Cathode Immersions, which was aired on 2SER in Sydney Australia. The audio that accompanied free-to-air television was remixed and rebroadcast in real time without latency. It explores the human and non-human aspects of the convergence of these two media, introducing ideas of xenocasting and media adjacency. The weekly xenocast of Cathode Immersions afforded unique translations of cultural narratives, from commentary on the Gulf War to machinic perspectives on the desires that surround commercial broadcasting

This article will explore the history of British teletext and telesoftware in the broader context of microprocessing developments during the late 1970s and early 1980s through a media archaeological framework of the terminology and traits. Situating these developments in the industrial and political climates of the 1970s, the article will outline an alternative history of networks through the aerial, as the ‘hidden lines’ of information become exposed once again

No full textSuzanne van Scheijen Financial crises in the media. A study of the framing of news on financial crises in Dutch newspapers Dutch newspapers have extensively compared the initial period of the financial crisis of 1929 to that of 2008 as well as their corresponding characteristics. This article shows that there are indeed many similarities in the framing and representation of both financial crises in two selected Dutch newspapers, the popular De Telegraaf and the reliable Algemeen Handelsblad. One similarity is that both newspapers in both periods mostly used the economic consequences frame. The types of sources on which they relied, however, were different. Further study of the sources and a qualitative analysis of the most popular frame revealed important differences between the representations of both financial crises
Tracing the unseen in post-communist Romanian television
No full textDuring the 1989 Romanian Revolution, the state television fell in the spotlight of the fight for a new democratic order. After decades of serving as the main mechanism of disinformation and control, the public and immediate change of sides during the revolutionary events of the public television, transformed the institution into a measurement unit for the consequent democratic evolution of Romania. The few minutes in which a nation witnessed the news presenter,Teodor Brates changed his speech from ‘the terrorist riots are under control’ to ‘we have won, the dictatorship has fallen’, appeared to mark the beginning of a new era. They also marked the beginning of the televised revolution, an event that complemented the street revolution in complex ways

The Board consists of management and policy representatives from all NISV units en is responsible for the validation and quality assurance of the overarching information policy and the IT policy of the institute, as these are developed and maintained for the core archival functions and processes (ingest, storage, preservation, access) as well as for the supporting systems (the networks and the application environment)
