    The Living CV project: a model of collaborative learning in third space

    The Living CV project is a collaborative initiative launched at a south coast university in the UK, which aims to help students develop their employability skills and evidence their learning outcomes. The project is delivered university-wide from a third space hub, where people from different disciplines and backgrounds come together to work on shared goals. It has therefore provided a way for colleagues across the university to collaborate within third space. In this study we focus on the role of the departmental Living CV Champions and their pivotal role in driving forward this third space project. These champions are situated across the university – in academic departments, in the university’s central Learning and Teaching service and in its career service – but all are working across boundaries and drawing collaborators into the third space of the project. We suggest that the Living CV Champions are also collaboration champions for the institution, in the way in which they support the development of staff networks and knowledge sharing, and therefore the collaborative capital of the institution as a whole. We find that third space projects such as the Living CV can contribute to the development of collaborative capital, act as a gateway for staff to wider communities of practice and build confidence for those engaged in them. In this case study we illustrate one route to achieving this, through a champions model which breaks down traditional academic silos and encourages wider collaboration

    Accurate multilevel thresholding image segmentation via oppositional Snake Optimization algorithm: Real cases with liver disease

    Liver-related diseases significantly contribute to global mortality rates. Accurate segmentation of liver disease from CT scans is essential for early diagnosis and treatment selection, particularly in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. To address challenges posed by inconsistent liver presence and unclear boundaries, an enhanced Snake Optimization (SO) algorithm is proposed that integrates with opposition-based learning (OBL) called (SO-OBL), proving effective in global optimization and multilevel image segmentation. Experiments using CEC’2022 test functions compare SO-OBL with eleven recent and state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms, demonstrating its superior performance. Additionally, an advanced liver disease segmentation model based on SO-OBL incorporates an optimized multilevel thresholding technique, leveraging Otsu’s function. Notable segmentation metric results, including FSIM = 0.947, SSIM = 0.941, PSNR = 24.876, MSE = 236.88, and execution time = 0.281, underscore the model’s efficiency and potential for accurate diagnosis in CAD systems

    Promoting students’ interest through culturally sensitive curricula in higher education

    Previous studies have emphasized culturally sensitive curricula in the context of enhancing minoritized students’ education. We examined the relationship between second-year higher education students’ perceptions of the cultural sensitivity of their curriculum and both majoritized and minoritized students’ interest in their course. A total of 286 (228 F) students rated the cultural sensitivity of their curriculum on six scales using a revised version of the Culturally Sensitive Curricula Scales (CSCS-R), the perceived quality of their relationships with teachers, and their interest. The CSCS-R widened the construct with two new scales and showed better reliability. Ethnic minority students (n = 99) perceived their curriculum as less culturally sensitive than White students (n = 182), corroborating previous findings. Black students perceived their curriculum as less culturally sensitive than Asian students. There were no significant differences between ethnic minority and White students on interest or perceived quality of relationships with teachers. Five dimensions of cultural sensitivity (Diversity Represented, Positive Depictions, Challenge Power, Inclusive Classroom Interactions, Culturally Sensitive Assessments) and perceived quality of relationships with teachers predicted interest. Ethnicity did not. Ensuring curricula and assessments represent diversity positively, challenge power and are inclusive may support students’ interest while reflecting an increasingly diverse society

    Occupational health and safety in aquaculture: organisation of work and employment in small seaweed farms in North West Europe

    There is evidence that seaweed production can involve a variety of physical risks, but there has been little study of how wider contextual factors — such as enterprise size, economic and business relations and forms of employment arrangements — may affect workers’ safety. This study explores the impact of such aspects on workers’ experiences of OSH risks and their management in the developing seaweed industry, in North West Europe. Based on qualitative findings from a survey and discussions with owners/managers, workers and stakeholders in the industry, the study identified a number of issues relating to occupational safety and health in seaweed production. These include the predominance of micro small enterprises, the presence of significant risks to health and safety and limitations in the capacity of owner/managers to address them, as well as structural and economic factors in the sector that promote precarious work, and the low visibility and inaccessibility of micro and small enterprises to both public and private regulation. The paper discusses experiences of these issues in the emergent industry, and relates them to the wider literature about work health and safety in micro and small firms and precarious and non-standard forms of work, typically found in agriculture and food production. Findings point to the need for better orchestration of public and private regulatory influences and further research to determine if strategies that are seen as successful in other sectors could be transferred to the emergent European seaweed industry

    Evaluation of the Omni-Secure Firewall System in a private cloud environment:Knowledge

    This research explores the optimization of firewall systems within private cloud environments, specifically focusing on a 30-day evaluation of the Omni-Secure Firewall. Employing a multi-metric approach, the study introduces an innovative effectiveness metric (E) that amalgamates precision, recall, and redundancy considerations. The evaluation spans various machine learning models, including random forest, support vector machines, neural networks, k-nearest neighbors, decision tree, stochastic gradient descent, naive Bayes, logistic regression, gradient boosting, and AdaBoost. Benchmarking against service level agreement (SLA) metrics showcases the Omni-Secure Firewall’s commendable performance in meeting predefined targets. Noteworthy metrics include acceptable availability, target response time, efficient incident resolution, robust event detection, a low false-positive rate, and zero data-loss incidents, enhancing the system’s reliability and security, as well as user satisfaction. Performance metrics such as prediction latency, CPU usage, and memory consumption further highlight the system’s functionality, efficiency, and scalability within private cloud environments. The introduction of the effectiveness metric (E) provides a holistic assessment based on organizational priorities, considering precision, recall, F1 score, throughput, mitigation time, rule latency, and redundancy. Evaluation across machine learning models reveals variations, with random forest and support vector machines exhibiting notably high accuracy and balanced precision and recall. In conclusion, while the Omni-Secure Firewall System demonstrates potential, inconsistencies across machine learning models underscore the need for optimization. The dynamic nature of private cloud environments necessitates continuous monitoring and adjustment of security systems to fully realize benefits while safeguarding sensitive data and applications. The significance of this study lies in providing insights into optimizing firewall systems for private cloud environments, offering a framework for holistic security assessment and emphasizing the need for robust, reliable firewall systems in the dynamic landscape of private clouds. Study limitations, including the need for real-world validation and exploration of advanced machine learning models, set the stage for future research directions

    The metaverse marketing revolution: How virtual worlds are redefining digital advertising and paving the way for corporate success

    A novel approach in digital marketing has been initiated by the emergence of the metaverse, which offers comprehensive and engaging interactions that are revolutionizing the way that businesses communicate with their target audience. This study seeks to investigate and assess how metaverse marketing is improving brand awareness and helping them achieve brand success. The basis is laid by an extensive examination of literature that looks at previous research, market dynamics, and technology developments in virtual worlds. The study employs a mixed method approach to collect reliable data for the research. A survey is conducted among the Middle East College students where 193 individuals participated having information about metaverse revolutionizing digital marketing. The study shows the current impact of metaverse on company's performance and how companies can utilize this technology to outperform the competition. Following structure equation modeling through SmartPLS, results show that there is a positive relationship between direct audience interaction and corporate success

    Academic literacies as a theoretical underpinning for Learning Development support

    Research into academic literacy or literacies, however the term is defined, and how the field relates to disciplinary practice, has been debated in recent decades (Lillis and Scott, 2007; Lillis, 2019). Consideration of academic literacies is also a key component of the Learning Development community as the profession has evolved and developed its own identity. Is the term defined as ‘literacy’ or ‘literacies’? Is it a core component of Learning Development practice, or is it more tied to disciplinary and curriculum-based delivery? By understanding the literature around the definition and the development and application of academic literacies, can we consider how this relates to current perceptions and understanding of the field in a Learning Development context and what impact it may have on student learning?This workshop provided participants with the opportunity to hear about current research being undertaken by the ALDinHE research virtual Community of Practice (vCoP) to investigate our current understanding of academic literacies, how they are (or it is, if considered a singular literacy) perceived across the Learning Development community, and how we might measure its impact on our practice and student learning. For simplicity within this paper, academic literacies will be referred to as a plural form.Due to the historical creation of Learning Development teams in response to sector changes in higher education, this workshop provided participants with the opportunity to hear about the current research on academic literacies. Participants were also able to discuss their own experiential views to develop a shared understanding of how we may apply this understanding to practice, and what the impact on our work may be. The workshop aimed to help define our understanding of academic literacies—both in terms of the literature and in practice—and take away ideas and examples of practice that we can apply in our own work
