    An application to simplify and improve efficiency in the management of a computer networking and cyber security laboratory

    Laboratories play an important part in the teaching and learning methodology of STEM subjects. In the teaching of Computer Networking and Cyber Security students may be exposed to a range of computer systems and networking devices. A computer in a computing laboratory may host a range of operating systems, services and software applications depending on the requirements of a teaching and learning session. These requirements may differ between various modules on a particular course. Hosting multiple operating systems in a laboratory is usually achieved by utilising virtual machines or containers. Before a laboratory-based session can begin the host computers or virtualised systems may need to be restored to a prior state or configured to accommodate a particular session and they may also need to be updated to accommodate changes to teaching and learning material. Whilst scripts and configuration management tools are available to accomplish this the process is often dynamic in nature, since configuration requirements may vary between sessions, and may demand specialist knowledge and additional staff time to achieve successfully. One technique to simplify the process is by cloning the host operating system or virtual machines and then deploying the resultant image to the laboratory computers. Unlike business-based networks where data must be preserved, and configuration changes are incremental, laboratory networks often require a complete rebuild to return hosts to a default configuration. An application has been developed that enables configuration management of the laboratory. Initially it was only capable of managing changes to the configuration of laboratory computers, a separate application known as Free and Open-source Ghost being used to manage the computer cloning process in which disks or partitions can be re-imaged on the computers. The process can be managed through a web browser-based interface. However, Free Open-source Ghost has an Application Programme Interface that can be accessed by third-party applications and an investigation was conducted to incorporate these cloning functions into the existing configuration management application. This paper will examine the features necessary for managing a computer networking and cyber security laboratory and the concepts incorporated into the management application, particularly focusing on the development of an interface extension to simplify functionality and improve the efficiency of management processes

    In this article, we focus on music fandom related to the band Yes, one of progressive rock’s most enduring legacy acts. Drawing on primary research interviews and focus groups, we argue that progressive rock fandom should be characterized as a largely private pursuit where the relationship between fans and their music is paramount. This relationship, and its associated listening practices, are viewed as an ongoing resource and life-long attachment of significant importance for personal identity, something which we characterize as a form of mea cultura. This term is used to signify individual rather than wider societal approaches to understanding music appreciation and the valorization of music artifacts and history

    Identifying research priorities for infection prevention and control. A mixed methods study with a convergent design

    BackgroundMeaningful research creates evidence for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practice.AimTo establish Infection Prevention Society (IPS) members’ research priorities to support future research projects.MethodsA mixed methods convergent parallel design incorporating a cross-sectional survey of IPS members (2022–2023), and focus group findings from the IPS Consultative Committee, (October 2022). Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim, entered into NVivo 12, and analysed using a thematic analysis approach.Findings/Results132 IPS members responded to the survey, including 120 (90.9%) nurses. The three most prevalent priorities were: Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (n = 84, 16.1%); IPC Training and Education (n = 77, 14.8%); and IPC Evidence-based Guidelines (n = 76, 14.6%). Analysis of the focus group transcripts identified six emergent themes ‘Patient Centred Care’, ‘Training and Education’, ‘IPC Role and Identity’, ‘IPC Leadership’, ‘IPC is Everyone’s Responsibility’, and ‘Research Activity’. Triangulation of findings demonstrated concordance between quantitative and qualitative findings with Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) and Training and Education identified as priority research areas.DiscussionThis study highlights the necessity of developing support systems and incorporating research priorities in QIPS, as well as Training and Education. The findings of this study align with the recommended core competencies and components for effective infection prevention and control programs, making them relevant to QIPS initiatives. The outcomes of the study will serve as a valuable resource to guide the IPS Research and Development Committee in delivering practical support to IPS members

    Blood flow restriction augments exercise-induced pressure pain thresholds over repetition and effort matched conditions

    We sought to determine the effects of blood flow restriction (BFR) on exercise-induced hypoalgesia, specifically using low-load (LL) resistance exercise (30% 1RM) protocols that accounted for each individual’s local muscular endurance capabilities. Forty-four participants completed four conditions: (1) 70% of maximal BFR repetitions with blood flow restriction (LL+BFR exercise); (2) 70% maximal BFR repetitions without LL+BFR (LL exercise); (3) 70% maximal free flow repetitions (LL+EFFORT exercise); (4) time-matched, non-exercise control (CON). Pressure pain threshold (PPT) was measured before and after exercise. Ischaemic pain threshold and tolerance was assessed only at post. The change in upper body PPT was greater for LL+BFR exercise compared to LL exercise [difference of 0.15 (0.35) kg/cm2], LL+EFFORT exercise [difference of 0.23 (0.45) kg/cm2], and the CON condition. The change in lower body PPT was greater for LL+BFR exercise compared to LL exercise [difference of 0.40 (0.55) kg/cm2], LL+EFFORT exercise [difference of 0.36 (0.62) kg/cm2], and the CON condition. Ischaemic pain thresholds and tolerances did not change. Submaximal exercise with BFR resulted in systemic increases in PPT but had no influence on ischaemic pain sensitivity. This effect is likely unique to BFR as we did not see changes in the effort matched free flow condition

    Exploring strength development in Year 6 students through a combined gymnastics and martial arts physical education unit

    This study assessed upper body strength parameters among year 6 students during the third school term, focusing on a Physical Education (PE) lessons encompassing gymnastics and martial arts. 51 students (22 males and 28 females), aged between 11 and 13 years, participated in the study. Measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the unit, including height, seated height, wingspan, mass, arm circumference, maximum arm circumference, back extension, along with tests for 1-minute push-ups, 1-minute sit-ups, and hand grip dynamometry. A Paired Student T-Test revealed significant differences were observed in height, seated height, wingspan, maximum arm circumference, back extension, 1-minute push-ups, 1-minute sit ups, and grip dynamometry for all participants. Male students exhibited significant differences in height, seated height, wingspan, 1-minute push-ups, and grip dynamometry, while female students demonstrated significant disparities in height, seated height, wingspan, maximum arm circumference, 1-minute sit-ups, and grip dynamometry. The findings suggest that participation in a PE unit focusing on gymnastics and martial arts can foster strength development in year 6 students. Notably, male students, despite being smaller and lighter than their female counterparts, consistently exhibited higher performance in the conducted tests, indicative of sexual dimorphism in strength capacity. Further exploration into the potential contributors to this sexual dimorphism, including hormonal variations, body composition disparities, and physiological responses to physical activity, is warranted to comprehensively elucidate strength development patterns in youths engaged in PE activities

    Inclusive programming teaching for diverse students

    We conducted action research on teaching programming to 66 diverse master’s students using content co-creation in academic year 2023/24. This approach allowed students to create their own problems and write programs to solve them, enhancing their understanding and programming skills. Pretests, post-tests, and a survey assessed their knowledge and opinions. Out of 28 consented participating students, posttest scores showed significant improvement, demonstrating enhanced comprehension regardless of prior computing experience. Positive feedback highlighted improvements in critical thinking, motivation, and a sense of belonging. These findings underscore the positive impact of an inclusive approach to teaching programming, providing a learning space for all students to develop their programming skills

The study presents an empirical investigation into heuristic methods for search and optimisation, demonstrating the energy efficiency of various algorithms in both simple and complex tasks. It also identifies key factors influencing the energy consumption of algorithms and their potential impact on computational processes. Furthermore, the article discusses cognitive concepts and their interplay with computational intelligence, highlighting the role of cognition in the evolution of intelligent algorithms.
