    Bridging theory and practice: The Chat Club’s influence on Football Studies education

    This paper examines the impact of The Chat Club, an online event series integrated into the BSc Football Studies course at Solent University. Designed to enhance student learning, The Chat Club facilitates interactions with professional football staff globally through interactive sessions. The study explores the event structure, diversity of guest speakers, and outcomes based on student testimonials and relevant research on online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiatives. Hosting 34 events with 39 guest speakers, topics ranged from biomechanics to coaching strategies, bridging theoretical knowledge with practical insights. Student feedback highlighted networking opportunities, practical relevance, and enhanced engagement. The initiative supports an inclusive curriculum, fostering diverse role models and equitable learning environments. Findings suggest online CPD events like The Chat Club complement traditional teaching methods by offering flexibility, broader participation, and engaging learning experiences. The integration of professional insights with academic content promotes holistic learning, preparing students for real-world challenges and aligning with experiential and constructivist educational theories. However, challenges such as ensuring consistent participation and managing technological barriers need to be addressed. The paper concludes that The Chat Club significantly enhances the educational experience for BSc Football Studies students and offers a viable framework for future educational initiatives in higher education

    Young sanctuary-living chimpanzees produce more communicative expressions with artificial objects than with natural objects

    In humans, interactions with objects are often embedded in communicative exchanges. Objects offer unique affordances to explore, carry functions and hold cultural relevance, which can shape children’s interactions and communication. Research indicates that the use of artificial objects, such as certain toys, helps promote pre-linguistic communication, consequently impacting language development. Given that chimpanzees use objects extensively compared to other great apes, and considering the differences between chimpanzees and bonobos in intrinsic motivation for tool use and the extended developmental period during which they learn to use objects, it is reasonable to expect that objects may influence chimpanzees’ communication. Here, we examined interactions of 31 immature sanctuary-living chimpanzees with non-novel artificial and natural objects and tested their vocal and facial expressions, applying methods previously designed for children. Our results showed an increase in these expressions associated with artificial objects. These findings provide the first empirical evidence that chimpanzee communicative expressions may be influenced by inherent properties of objects, potentially promoting varied communication, comparable to the impact distinctive objects have on pre-linguistic children. By exploring this connection between object-centric interactions and communication, this study reveals deep phylogenetic roots where objects may have shaped great ape communication and possibly evolutionary foundations of language

    The research project The Woods explores the intersection of fairy tale symbolism and contemporary digital landscapes, drawing parallels between the mythical "woods of experience" and online spaces. Presented at the "Transforming Literary Places" exhibition in Tartu, Estonia (March 28 – May 18, 2024), the work reflects on societal expectations placed on women, as seen in Zipes' analysis of Little Red Riding Hood. The project highlights themes of self-discovery, objectification, and silencing, examining how digital platforms perpetuate traditional gender dynamics while offering a paradoxical space of liberation. Through self-portraits styled after social media conventions and set in wooded landscapes, the artist juxtaposes fairy tale motifs with modern digital anxieties, placing the works back online to be rediscovered by both seekers and trolls

    Vertical jump testing after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    INTRODUCTION: Recently, there has been a call for vertical jump testing via force-plate analysis to be included in the assessment of individuals after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and as part of return-to-play criteria. However, a synthesis of current literature is needed to help guide clinicians on what tests to perform, which force-plate metrics to assess, and how these may change over the time course of rehabilitation.METHODS: Four online databases were searched from inception to July 2022. The Downs and Black checklist was used to assess study quality. Multilevel meta-analyses and meta-regressions were undertaken in conjunction with a best evidence synthesis.RESULTS: Forty-two articles were included, capturing 2375 participants with a history of ACLR. Reconstructed limbs displayed 1) lower peak eccentric forces, concentric forces, landing forces, and lower eccentric and concentric impulses (standardized means difference [SMD] = -1.84 to -0.46) than uninjured contralateral limbs during bilateral countermovement jumps (CMJ) and drop vertical jumps (DVJ); 2) lower jump heights and reactive strength indices (RSI), and longer contact times than uninjured contralateral limbs during unilateral CMJ and DVJ (SMD = -0.86 to 0.26); and 3) lower jump heights, RSI, and longer contact times during bilateral and unilateral CMJ, and unilateral DVJ, than uninjured controls (SMD = -1.19 to 1.08). Meta-regression revealed that time postsurgery was a significant moderator ( P &lt; 0.05) for 1) bilateral CMJ height, peak concentric force, and peak landing force; 2) between-limb differences in unilateral CMJ height; and 3) differences in unilateral DVJ height, RSI, and contact time between reconstructed limbs and healthy controls with no history of injury.CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with a history of ACLR display chronic deficits in vertical jumping performance during a range of bilateral and unilateral tasks, which may have implications for return-to-play criteria and the design of interventions targeted at restoring long-term deficits in explosive lower limb strength after ACLR.</p

    Temporary Paradise: Queer Time, Space, and Pastoral Visions

    Sixteenth-century writer, George Puttenham, was among the first critics of the pastoral literary tradition. In Art of English Poesy (1589), he defines the pastoral’s (or eclogue’s) purpose “to contain and inform moral discipline” and amend “man’s behaviour” at the same time as commenting on the socio-political concerns of its day. Centuries on, numerous artists, writers and filmmakers have reclaimed the pastoral genre in queer terms as a space for homosexual love and as a challenge to heteronormativity within literary modes. The chapter analyses how Call Me By Your Name visualises a queer pastoral space and time for its characters to explore gay love. Drawing on the writing of critical theorists and extensive textual analysis of key scenes, it identifies key features of the pastoral form within the film. These include an Arcadian setting, narrative movements of retreats and returns, and nostalgia for a lost past. With this in place, the chapter explores how the film uses pastoral conventions to construct a nostalgic or idyllic view of gay romance. Set in an unspecified location in Northern Italy, it asks to what extent the film deliberately uses utopian discourses to suggest the relative im/possibilities of queer love? The final section links to how the film relates to queer time through its veiled references to the AIDS crisis

    Blood flow restriction pressure for narrow cuffs (5 cm) cannot be estimated with precision

    Blood flow restriction pressures are set relative to the lowest pressure needed to occlude blood flow with that specific cuff. Due to pressure limitations of some devices, it is often not possible to occlude blood flow in all subjects and apply a known relative pressure in the lower body with a 5 cm wide cuff. Objective: To use a device capable of generating high pressures (up to 907 mmHg) to create and validate an estimation equation for the 5 cm cuff in the lower body using a 12 cm cuff.Approach: 170 participants had their arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) with a 5 cm and 12 cm cuff and their thigh circumference measured in their right leg. The sample was randomly allocated to a prediction group (66%) and validation group (33%). Thigh circumference and 12 cm AOP were used as predictors. A Bland-Altman plot was constructed to assess agreement between measured and predicted values. Main results: The mean difference (95% confidence interval) between the observed (336.8 mmHg) and the predicted (343.9 mmHg) 5 cm AOP was 7.1 (-11.9, 26.1) mmHg. The 95% limits of agreement were -133.6 to 147.8 mmHg. There was a negative relationship between the difference and the average of predicted and measured 5 cm AOP (B= -0.137, p=0.000043). Significance: Although this was the first study to quantify AOP over 600 mmHg with a 5 cm cuff, our equation is not valid across all levels of pressure. If possible, larger cuff widths should be employed in the lower body

    Saliency guided Siamese attention network for infrared ship target tracking

    Due to the lack of discriminative features in infrared images, most of existing trackers cannot separate a target from its background. There are some studies on generating discriminative features where feature fusion and attention are applied to enhance targets. However, the saliency information and information interaction which assist in locating the targets is ignored. To improve the accuracy of infrared ship target tracking, we propose a saliency guided Siamese attention network (SGSiamAttn). The main contribution is to design a saliency prediction network that obtains the saliency map of a search region and followed by a saliency enhancement network to highlight the target. With the saliency information, our network is able to perceive the entire target, which improves the discriminative ability and the tracking accuracy. Meanwhile, a local-to-global correlation module is applied before the saliency prediction network, aiming to refine the correlation map while suppressing non-target interferences. We also impose a shared cross-correlation module on the region proposal network. By sharing the correlation map in the classification and regression branches, it enhances information interaction between the two tasks and reduces the computational cost. As there are limited number of infrared ship tracking datasets publicly available, we construct a new infrared ship dataset (ISD) which includes 16 different types of ships and 7,872 video frames with manual annotations. The experimental results on ISD and other three public datasets, namely VOT-TIR2015, PTB-TIR, and LSOTB-TIR, demonstrate that our tracker achieves superior performance in terms of accuracy, expected average overlap, success, and precision

    Evaluation of constraints for investment in NOx emission technologies: case study on Greek bulk carrier owners

    Purpose The maritime industry is the transport mode that contributes most to air pollution. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) identified the reduction of air pollution by ships as a crucial issue. Since 1 January 2020, ships have had to adopt strategies and new technologies to eliminate air pollution. However, ship compliance with nitrate oxide (NOx) emission restrictions is more challenging. This paper aims to identify ship owners' challenges in investing in new technologies.Design/methodology/approachThis paper applied a hybrid methodology combining a survey, a balanced scorecard and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) to identify and evaluate constraints and weights in investment decision-making for NOx technologies. A survey was carried out to validate constraints.Findings A survey was carried out, representing 5.1% of Greek-owned ships by deadweight capacity. The findings provide a weighted list of seven crucial technical and economic constraints faced by ship operators. The constraints vary from ship retrofit expenditure to crew training and waste management. Additionally, NOx emission technologies were compared. It was found that liquefied natural gas is the preferred investment option for the survey participants compared with selective catalytic reduction, exhaust gas recirculation and batteries.Originality/value Several studies have dealt with the individual technical feasibility of NOx reduction technologies. However, apart from technical feasibility for a shipowner, the selection of a NOx technology has several managerial and safety risks. Therefore, the originality of this paper is to reveal those constraints that have a higher weight on ship owners. With this cost-benefit approach, investment challenges for ship operators are revealed. Policymakers can benefit from the results of the employed methodology
