Analysis of the internal and external loads, and technical actions of small-sided games in soccer
The priority in team sport training like soccer is the acquisition and refinement of individual and group skills as well as tactics to transform the group into an effective competitive unit. To achieve these objectives, it is common for coaches to reduce both the number of players and the field dimensions to manipulate exercise intensity, catering for the specific needs of their players. The use of small-sided games (SSGs) that feature less participant has proven a practical tool for coaches, for the development of technical, tactical, and physical abilities. The objective of this paper is to conduct a review of the literature on the topic of small-sided games to analyze specific parameters such as physiological, technical, and movement duration. The effectiveness of SSGs in enhancing aerobic and anaerobic capacities as well as technical skills is often highlighted although their main benefit might be to practice decision-making and problem-solving under pressure, replicating game-like situations. Examining the psychological aspects during small-sided games, such as confidence, motivation, enjoyment, and cognitive engagement, could also provide insights into optimizing training programs and enhancing player development. In summary, small-sided games offer diverse benefits for physical, technical, tactical development in players across different age groups and skill levels for both training and/or learning purposes. Future research should thus focus on investigating the long-term effects of small-sided games on players’ physical and technical development, as well as their transfer to actual match performance
Progressive rock and the Ship of Theseus: From Gong Est Mort to “The Dream is Always the Same”
In the ancient Greek historian and biographer Plutarch’s Life of Theseus, a story is told about a ship which has had every part of its timber replaced, sparking a thought experiment about whether the resulting ship made of all new timber can be regarded as the same ship as the original. It is a thought experiment that was later taken up by others, including the 17th century English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the 20th century American philosopher David Lewis, and in popular British culture as Trigger’s Broom – a moment in the television programme Only Fools and Horses, where the road sweeper character Trigger, who has just been awarded by his employer for using the same broom for twenty years admits that it is has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in that time. This story has resonance in the history of progressive rock where long-lived groups have had numerous line-ups over the years, and some now exist with no original members at time. Examples of the latter include the current version of the band Gong whose founding members Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth died in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and the current version of Tangerine Dream, whose founder Edgar Froese died in 2015. Both of these groups have continued without any original members to not only perform older material in a live setting but to write and release brand new music under the respective band names. This presentation will draw on ideas relating to the thought experiment of the Ship of Theseus to question notions of authenticity, heritage and nostalgia, and to consider the reception of fans to the continuation of these bands. It also asks whether we shall see more bands (as brands) continue in this fashion in the future
Towards staff engagement with SoTL: The case for supporting SoTL coherently and sustainably
Collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching in sport and exercise: Lessons from the development and delivery of an equity, diversity, and inclusion workshop
Training in sport and exercise that is collaborative and interdisciplinary allows for the delivery of key knowledge and skills that help shape trainees’ practice. Such training also demonstrates how collaborations can take shape and how individuals can work together in the future. We present an example of collaborative and interdisciplinary training used within an equity, diversity, and inclusion workshop that was provided to trainees enrolled on the Sport and Exercise Psychology Accreditation Route (SEPAR)training program offered through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. The SEPAR program was designed to allow trainees to gain knowledge, skills, and experience to apply and register as Practitioner Psychologists with the Health and Care Professions Council in the United Kingdom. The workshop was a collaboration between individuals trained in sport and exercise psychology and clinical social work. Overall, the workshop helped trainees gain an understanding of key terms and definitions concerning equity, equality, diversity, inclusion, and social justice as well as legal responsibilities. The workshop also demonstrated a variety of perspectives from sport and exercise psychology and clinical social work as to how inclusive and socially just approaches can be used to create safe environments that can foster strong therapeutic relationships with clients
Machine learning model for predicting hepatocellular carcinoma in Hepatitis C patients
An estimated 58 million people suffer from chronic Hepatitis C virus around the world, while substantial evidence indicates that patients with Hepatitis C virus are at 17 times larger risk of developing Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma). Research has been carried out to predict hepatitis C and liver cancer at different stages in patients. In this research, we proposed the Classification model AdaBoost with Decision Tree as its base model to be trained and tested on patient dataset. The dataset contains records of clinical indicators and was acquired from the University of California Irvine Machine Learning Repository. The preparation of the dataset was done using balancing techniques i.e. SMOTE, it was encoded using Ordinal Encoding. The hyperparameters of AdaBoost model was tuned manually to find the most optimal combination. AdaBoost Classification Model achieved a 92.68% accuracy, and the AUROC of 0.97. The precision and recall differ for each class, “healthy” individuals were classified with a precision of 98% and a recall of 99% while patients with “Cirrhosis” (irreversible scarring of liver due to a tumor) were classified with 86% precision and 67% recall. The research concluded that machine learning has efficient applications in predicting diseases. Moreover, the clinical indicators mentioned in previous studies have proven to be vital in the prediction of HCC (liver cancer) however it is advised that, in future a larger dataset may be acquired to overcome any potential biases in the predictions. The current program successfully distinguishes between patients at different stages of HCC and HCV and can be further adapted to build decision systems to aid diagnosis
A comprehensive review of existing corpora and methods for creating annotated corpora for event extraction tasks
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to serve as a comprehensive review of the existing annotated corpora. This review study aims to provide information on the existing annotated corpora for event extraction, which are limited but essential for training and improving the existing event extraction algorithms. In addition to the primary goal of this study, it provides guidelines for preparing an annotated corpus and suggests suitable tools for the annotation task.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs an analytical approach to examine available corpus that is suitable for event extraction tasks. It offers an in-depth analysis of existing event extraction corpora and provides systematic guidelines for researchers to develop accurate, high-quality corpora. This ensures the reliability of the created corpus and its suitability for training machine learning algorithms.FindingsOur exploration reveals a scarcity of annotated corpora for event extraction tasks. In particular, the English corpora are mainly focused on the biomedical and general domains. Despite the issue of annotated corpora scarcity, there are several high-quality corpora available and widely used as benchmark datasets. However, access to some of these corpora might be limited owing to closed-access policies or discontinued maintenance after being initially released, rendering them inaccessible owing to broken links. Therefore, this study documents the available corpora for event extraction tasks.Research limitationsOur study focuses only on well-known corpora available in English and Chinese. Nevertheless, this study places a strong emphasis on the English corpora due to its status as a global lingua franca, making it widely understood compared to other languages.Practical implicationsWe genuinely believe that this study provides valuable knowledge that can serve as a guiding framework for preparing and accurately annotating events from text corpora. It provides comprehensive guidelines for researchers to improve the quality of corpus annotations, especially for event extraction tasks across various domains.Originality/valueThis study comprehensively compiled information on the existing annotated corpora for event extraction tasks and provided preparation guidelines
The Nutrition Society Satellite Symposium, Nutrition Congress: Workplace diet and health
The workplace is a key environmental determinant of health and wellbeing. Food choices can be influenced by several workplace related factors including, but not limited to, working hours, the workplace food environment, job roles and workplace culture. Therefore, the workplace is increasingly viewed as an important place for public health nutrition interventions. However, research in this area is fragmented and heterogeneous due to the wide range of workplace settings and occupational groups. This editorial summarises the research presented at The Nutrition Society Workplace Diet and Health Special Interest Group Satellite Symposium in July 2024 as part of the inaugural Nutrition Society congress
