"Who am I? Navigating professional identity as an ethnic minority early career academic
Finding the answer to my academic identity and a sense of belonging is something I have questioned since I just started my doctorate journey. It has been a question lingering in my mind with no clear answer where one will go after a few years of completing a PhD. Yet, without a doubt, the challenges I experienced demonstrate that constructing my identity in my discipline and the wider sector will be much more challenging than one would have hoped. This reflection article aims to share a personal account of a doctoral researcher transitioning to an independent professional. Key aspects, such as their experience constructing their identity in their field, the professional developmental support as a doctoral researcher in preparation and during that transition, and the challenges with employment opportunities for the wider doctoral graduate community will be discussed. In addition to drawing on previous literature, provocative questions will be shared with the higher education sector to consider what more we can do to support the lives of postgraduate researchers after their doctorate to support their sense of belonging. Championing that early career professionals need to have the graduates' attributes to make it in the "real world" is one thing. But the support to meet individual needs is another. Having the right skills and experiences is difficult and valuable. Yet, do we know if our graduates are fully ready to become independent professionals in the real world
Variation in perceived motivational climate in sports among young football players: a case study during a tournament preparation
The athletes’ perceptions of their coaches' behaviour significantly contribute to the perception of motivational climate. This study aims to analyse the consequences of different types of coaching orientation on young football players, considering the perceived motivational climate in sports. Twenty-two football players aged 13-14 years completed the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2 prior to the first practice in preparation for a tournament, and before the last game. The coach promoted a mastery approach to the under-13 team (n=12), and a performance approach to the under-14 team (n=10). Kruskal-Wallis Test showed no statistical differences pre-intervention. Post-intervention showed differences for Cooperation (p<0.05, higher for under-13), and Inequality (p<0.05, higher for under-14). The factorial analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in the various categories at the two data collection time points. The results demonstrate that the motivational climate perceived by players is directly influenced by the coach's attitudes and behaviours, with different training strategies inculcating different perceptions among players. Player’s perception of coaches providing positive and encouraging feedback after success or failure in performance, as well as not ignoring errors, supporting players, and providing ample guidance, was associated with a task-oriented climate. In contrast, players who perceive their coach to give less positive feedback but a high amount of punishment feedback, punish excessively, and provide little support, were associated with an ego-oriented climate
A robust framework for ensuring data confidentiality and security in modern healthcare networks
The potential implementation of extensive data sharing in dispersed network systems is likely to give rise to concerns surrounding privacy, secrecy, and authentication inside the realm of cyberspace. The main objective of this work is to safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of data inside an unsecured environment during the exchange of audiovisual content between two Internet of Things (IoT) nodes. To effectively counteract an adversary and guarantee the confidentiality of data, we suggest the implementation of a resilient multi-level security strategy that relies on the principles of information hiding and chaos theory. While certain block-based resilient data concealing strategies based on the transform domain have demonstrated favorable outcomes, their suboptimal block and coefficient selection processes lead to inadequate performance against prevalent cyber-attacks. Therefore, we propose a Robust Framework for Ensuring Data Confidentiality and Security in EHR-based networks using federated-learning with homomorphic-encryption. A differential-privacy technique is used&nbsp;here&nbsp;to increase privacy, which entails adding noise to the aggregated model update. The suggested model outperforms the most recent techniques for data security and secrecy in networks based on electronic health records
Exploring strength development in Year 6 students through a combined gymnastics and martial arts physical education unit
This study assessed upper body strength parameters among year 6 students during the third school term, focusing on a Physical Education (PE) lessons encompassing gymnastics and martial arts. 51 students (22 males and 28 females), aged between 11 and 13 years, participated in the study. Measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the unit, including height, seated height, wingspan, mass, arm circumference, maximum arm circumference, back extension, along with tests for 1-minute push-ups, 1-minute sit-ups, and hand grip dynamometry. A Paired Student T-Test revealed significant differences were observed in height, seated height, wingspan, maximum arm circumference, back extension, 1-minute push-ups, 1-minute sit ups, and grip dynamometry for all participants. Male students exhibited significant differences in height, seated height, wingspan, 1-minute push-ups, and grip dynamometry, while female students demonstrated significant disparities in height, seated height, wingspan, maximum arm circumference, 1-minute sit-ups, and grip dynamometry. The findings suggest that participation in a PE unit focusing on gymnastics and martial arts can foster strength development in year 6 students. Notably, male students, despite being smaller and lighter than their female counterparts, consistently exhibited higher performance in the conducted tests, indicative of sexual dimorphism in strength capacity. Further exploration into the potential contributors to this sexual dimorphism, including hormonal variations, body composition disparities, and physiological responses to physical activity, is warranted to comprehensively elucidate strength development patterns in youths engaged in PE activities
N of 1: optimizing methodology for the detection of individual response variation in resistance training
Most resistance training research focuses on inference from average intervention effects from observed group-level change scores (i.e., mean change of group A vs group B). However, many practitioners are more interested in training responses (i.e., causal effects of an intervention) on the individual level (i.e., causal effect of intervention A vs intervention B for individual X). To properly examine individual response variation, multiple confounding sources of variation (e.g., random sampling variability, measurement error, biological variability) must be addressed. Novel study designs where participants complete both interventions and at least one intervention twice can be leveraged to account for these sources of variation (i.e., n of 1 trials). Specifically, the appropriate statistical methods can separate variability into the signal (i.e., participant-by-training interaction) versus the noise (i.e., within-participant variance). This distinction can allow researchers to detect evidence of individual response variation. If evidence of individual response variation exists, researchers can explore predictors of the more favorable intervention, potentially improving exercise prescription. This review outlines the methodology necessary to explore individual response variation to resistance training, predict favorable interventions, and the limitations thereof. Clarifying supply chain disruption and operational resilience relationship from a threat-rigidity perspective: Evidence from small and medium-sized enterprises
Given the significant risk supply chain disruptions pose to businesses, scholars and experts presume such events encourage resilience-building efforts. This study uses the threat-rigidity theory to question this normative assumption by proposing that supply chain disruption can trigger threat interpretation bias, which undermines operational resilience. Specifically, the study contends that threat interpretation bias negatively mediates the relationship between supply chain disruption and operational resilience, particularly in low disruption orientation circumstances. An empirical analysis of survey data from 259 small and medium-sized enterprises in Ghana using covariance-based structural equation modeling supports these theoretical predictions. The results indicate that supply chain disruption increases threat interpretation bias, which in turn reduces operational resilience. The negative effect of threat interpretation bias on operational resilience is stronger when disruption orientation is low than when it is high. These results offer an enhanced understanding of the supply chain disruption–resilience link while shedding light on how firms can manage threat interpretation bias to improve operational resilience

The workplace is a key environmental determinant of health and wellbeing. Food choices can be influenced by several workplace related factors including, but not limited to, working hours, the workplace food environment, job roles and workplace culture. Therefore, the workplace is increasingly viewed as an important place for public health nutrition interventions. However, research in this area is fragmented and heterogeneous due to the wide range of workplace settings and occupational groups. This editorial summarises the research presented at The Nutrition Society Workplace Diet and Health Special Interest Group Satellite Symposium in July 2024 as part of the inaugural Nutrition Society congress
Efficacy of neuromuscular exercises to promote movement quality and reduce musculoskeletal injury during initial military training in Royal Navy recruits
Introduction Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are a significant problem in the Royal Navy, contributing to 48% of all medical discharges from service between 2019 and 2020. The objective of the study was to assess efficacy of implementing a neuromuscular training intervention to improve movement quality and reduce MSKIs in Royal Navy recruits undertaking initial military training.Methods Neuromuscular training (pre-activation exercises, focusing on hip control) was integrated into the warm-up exercise regimen preceding physical training during the 10-week initial naval training (recruits) programme (January–March 2020) at HMS Raleigh (intervention group; n=162). A control group comprised (n=90) of recruits entering training from January 2019, who completed the standard warm-up programme prior to physical training. Movement control of the intervention group (intervention) was assessed before and after the 10-week programme using the Hip and Lower-Limb Movement Screen (HLLMS). Injury incidence proportion for both groups was determined retrospectively by review of medical notes.Results The control group’s MSKI incidence proportion was 31%, which was higher (p&lt;0.05) than the 8% reported in the intervention group. The majority of MSKIs were of the lower limb, and were reported in weeks 1, 2 and 5 of the 10-week training programme. Movement control, as assessed by the HLLMS score, improved (pretraining (week 1) and post-training (week 10) HLLMS score (mean (SD) pre: 11.2 (5.6); post: 8.4 (3.9); t=5.829, p&lt;0.001) following the neuromuscular training in the intervention group but was not assessed in the control group.Conclusion A neuromuscular control intervention was successfully implemented during the initial military training in the Royal Navy. The cohort undertaking the intervention demonstrated lower injury incidence compared with an equivalent cohort of recruits who undertook standard training. Movement control improved following the intervention, indicating better movement quality. Continued use of the programme may reduce military training attrition in the Royal Navy
Co-creating value in entrepreneurship: an exploratory study of Lebanese women
This study aims to amplify theory and practice at the marketing/entrepreneurship interface (MEI) by proposing a revision to the key concept of value creation. Advances in marketing research suggest that value is co-created by means of multiple actors, who integrate their resources within ecosystems. This study, therefore, investigates value co-creation from a MEI perspective. The study is based in Lebanon, a country encountering turbulence and disruption, providing a MENA context. In recognition of local conditions, the methodology is contextually congruent, using socially mediated interviews and panel discussions. Analysis of these data uncovers emergent practices of VCC that are captured in two dimensions of adaptive marketing and online interactions that take place within a digitally enabled but imbalanced entrepreneurial ecosystem. The study offers a revision to theory at the MEI by extending value creation to value co-creation and by showing how value cocreation may be adapted and reconfigured according to local circumstances
