Deep learning and similarity-based models for predicting turbofan engine remaining useful life: insights from the CMAPSS dataset
Turbofan engines are having a growing role in modern aircraft maintenance. Due to this increase, estimation of remaining useful life (RUL) of these engines is an important area of study in the field of reliability and maintenance optimisation. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach that combines deep learning models with similarity-based methods for accurate RUL estimation. For a better comparison, we evaluate four architectures: dropout long short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional LSTM, convolutional neural network 1D (CNN 1D), and multi-layer LSTM. The FD002 subset of NASA's Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation dataset is used in the case study. Root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were used for performance metrics. The main output of the study suggests that the dropout LSTM model achieves the best prediction accuracy with an RMSE score of 26.547 and a MAE score of 18.749. It is worth noting that these are achieved despite requiring higher computational resources compared to multi-layer LSTM. Furthermore, all models had difficulties with smaller test trajectory lengths such as 50-100 due to training data imbalance. Overall, the findings highlight the promise of hybrid deep learning and similarity-based approaches for RUL prediction. However, potential advancements such as hyperparameter optimisation and data augmentation still hold potential for further improvements

Therapeutic drug monitoring of vancomycin in the case of augmented renal clearance: a case report of a paediatric patient
Augmented renal clearance (ARC) is a condition in which renal circulation increases, causing drug levels in the blood to remain at subtherapeutic levels in severe trauma patients. Vancomycin, a hydrophilic anti-Gram-positive drug, has been shown in the literature to have its levels fall below the therapeutic range in the case of ARC. However, vancomycin dosing recommendations in the case of ARC are still lacking. Here, we identify an ARC case measured with urinary creatinine clearance in a severe trauma paediatric patient, causing vancomycin blood trough levels to drop. We could not be able to increase the vancomycin trough levels with intermittent dosing; hence, we administered vancomycin with continuous infusion, and this resulted in vancomycin blood trough levels remaining in the therapeutic range. No adverse effect was seen. Continuous infusion of vancomycin can be safely administered to paediatric patients in these cases
Guided Imagery Effects on Pain, Anxiety, and Sleep for Lumbar Discectomy Patients
Purpose: Pain, sleep problems, and anxiety due to all these are common problems in patients who have had herniated disk surgery. This study aims to analyze the effect of the guided imagery technique on the patients' pain, anxiety, and sleep levels before and after a lumbar disk herniation (LDH) operation. Design: This study was conducted as a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial. Methods: The research was conducted with 60 patients who underwent LDH surgery and met the inclusion criteria. Patients were divided into experimental and control groups according to a computer-generated randomization list. The treatment group (n = 31) applied guided imagery techniques twice, once in the preoperative and postoperative periods. The control group (n = 29) was provided with routine care. “Introductory Information Form,” “Surgery-Specific Anxiety Scale,” “Richard-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire,” and “Visual Analogue Scale (VAS)” were used. The data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, paired sample t test, independent sample t test, Pearson chi-square exact test, and repeated measures two-way analysis of variance. In all results, P <.05 was considered statistically significant. Findings: The preoperative anxiety level of the treatment group was lower compared to the anxiety level of the control group (P <.05). The sleep score of the treatment group in the preoperative period was higher than the sleep score of the control group (P <.05). The sleep score of the treatment group in the postoperative period was found to be higher than the sleep score of the control group (P <.05). The pain average of the treatment group in the postoperative period was lower than the pain average of the control group (P <.05). Conclusions: Our study results revealed that guided imagery applied in the preoperative and postoperative periods effectively decreased pain and anxiety levels and increased the sleep quality of patients with LDH
Measurements of Flow Characterization Revealing Transition to Turbulence Associated with the Partial Flexibility-Based Flow Control at Low Reynolds Number
In order to comprehend the flow characteristics of both controlled and uncontrolled SD7062 wind turbine airfoils with local flexible membrane material throughout a variety of angles of attack at a Reynolds number of 1.05 x 105, an experimental investigation was conducted. The time-dependent force measurement, the hot-wire experiment with a boundary layer and glue-on probes, and the oil-flow visualization technique were all utilized in the present study to measure the flow over the airfoil and examine the laminar-turbulent transition, laminar separation bubble, and the impact of a special flow control method that uses flexibility. A comprehensive intermittency analysis by utilizing hot-wire results was employed to obtain the flow physics effects of the local flexibility the first in the literature. The key results of the experiment demonstrated that the stall was delayed from alpha = 10 degrees to 12 degrees by the local flexibility. The hot-wire results are dedicated to laminar, transitional and turbulent regions and the transition phenomena at different locations over the suction surface of the airfoil in the analysis graphs. As demonstrated by the results of the oil-flow visualization experiment, in the uncontrolled case, the laminar separation bubble formed over the airfoil at alpha = 8 degrees between x/c = 0.16 and x/c = 0.42. The use of flexible membrane material over the airfoil provided that the oscillation of this material triggered the transition to turbulence and a bypass transition, which resulted in the reattached flow
