    The first record of pectoral and pelvic fins deformity in the freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis (Pisces: Blenniidae) collected from Kızılırmak River, Turkey

    The freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis (Asso y del Rio, 1801) is a freshwater species that favors demersal environments. Individuals of this species live in rivers and brooks of Europe, North Africa and Israel. Three specimens of S. fluviatilis (TL 80.82 mm, 60.98 mm and 64.14 mm) collected from Kızılırmak River – Kesikköprü Bridge, Turkey during July 2021 showed deformities in both pectoral and pelvic fins. Degeneration was noted in the pectoral fin rays particularly the last ventral two soft rays (soft ray no. 13 and 14 counting from dorsal to ventral). They also look smaller than those in the normal specimen do. The degeneration in the soft ray no. 13 is less severe than soft ray no. 14. The x-ray of the abnormal specimen showed no other pectoral fin rays were deformed and the pectoral girdle was normal. In both specimens of S. fluviatilis that showed pelvic fin rays degeneration, the whole left pelvic fin and the right pelvic fin were completely degenerated and no soft rays are present. The possible causative factors of these anomalies are discussed. Our finding highlights the need for closer monitoring of the freshwater environment and for the identification of the specific factor that caused these abnormalities. © 2022 The authors

    Antıprolıferatıve Effect Of Lactobacıllus Plantarum L4 Straın Isolated From Cervıcovagınal Mıcroflora On Hela Cancer Cell Lıne

    Objective: Lactobacillus has been shown to inhibit proliferation of various cancer cells, but the effects of vaginal Lactobacillus on cervical cancer cells have rarely been reported. The goal of this investigation was to assess the anti-proliferative effect on cancer cell line HeLa (Human Cervical Carcinoma Cell) and potential probiotic properties of Lactobacillus plantarum L4 isolated from cervicovaginal flora of healthy women in Turkey.Materials and Methods: Molecular identification of the species was performed by 16S rDNA analysis. Probiotic properties of the L4 strain were investigated by conventional methods. Human Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) ELISA kits were used in the evelation of the immune modulator effect of the L4 strain. The antiproliferative effect of the L4 strain on the HeLA cell line was performed using the XTT kit. Results: L. plantarum L4 strain exhibited strong probiotic properties. The L4 strain showed an anti-inflammatory effect on HeLa by reducing the production of TNF-alpha and increased IL-10 production. The greatest antiproliferative effect of L. plantarum L4 strain on HeLa cells was observed at the highest dose of the metabolite 0.0006 gr/ml with a death rate of 90-95% while the number of living cells was found to be between 5-10%. The strain showed no anticancer effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Conclusion: L. plantarum L4 strain, with strong probiotic properties, can be considered a promising treatment candidate for HPV cancer due to its immunomodulatory effect and high anti proliferative effect, even in very small doses

    A polydentate ligand based on 2,2’-dipyridylamine unit linked benzo-15-crown-5; alkali and transition metal complexes; photoresponsive ligand; antimicrobial evaluation against pathogenic microorganisms

    New double-armed benzo-15-crown-5 compound (L) was successfully synthesized from 4’,5’-bis(bromethyl)benzo-15- crown-5 with 2,2’-dipyridylamine. The synthesized host molecule (L), the dipyridylamine unit was able to coordinate Ni2+, Cu2+ and Ag+ metal cations, whereas the crown ether moiety bound with the alkali metal cations (Na+ and K+). The structures of the ligand (L), alkali metal complexes (NaL and KL2) and transition metal complexes ([NiLOAc], [CuLOAc] and [AgLNO3]) were characterized by spectroscopic methods. NMR and mass data provided exact evidence of complex formation through both coordination centers of the new ligand (L). Both parts (dipyridyl and crown ether) were linked to form a potential fuorescent-sensing compound (L) for metal cations. Therefore, to investigate the metal selectivity, diferent metal cations (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ba2+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Ag+) and the new sensing compound (L) fuorescence spectra were recorded. Coordinations with Zn2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ induced obvious changes on their increasing concentrations in fuorescence spectra. Crown ethers, as representatives of supramolecular compounds, are also promising antibacterial active compounds because of their ionophoric features. Synthesized ligand (L) and complexes (NaL, KL2, [NiLOAc], [CuLOAc] and [AgLNO3]) also proved to be adjuvants that helped to overcome antimicrobial resistance in a range of bacteria and yeast.     The Effects Of Dryıng Methods On Total Phenolıc And Flavonoıd Substances And Antıoxıdant Capacıty Of Redstem Fılaree (Erodıum Cıcutarıum)

    In this study, the effects of some drying techniques on antioxidant activity of the Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Her plant, which has ethnobotanical and medical importance, were investigated. The plant samples were divided into three groups; the group dried in sunlight (SD), the group dried in a thermostatic oven at 55 degrees C (OD) and the group dried in the shade (DS). Total phenolic substance amounts were determined as 41.27 +/- 2.93 mg GAE/g in DS, 15.14 +/- 2.25 mg GAE/g in SD and 14.60 +/- 0.86 mg GAE/g in OD, respectively. The highest amount of flavonoid substance was determined as 71.99 +/- 2.24 mg QE/g in the OD group. The IC50 value, from smallest to largest, was found to be 49.47 +/- 2.69 mu g/mL in DS, 71.90 +/- 1.69 mu g/mL in SD, and 89.81 +/- 3.42 mu g/mL in OD. In addition, it was determined that the highest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and the highest Fe3+-Fe2+ reducing capacity were in DS at all concentrations.     Parameter determination and calibration of the combined plasticity model through inverse analysis for cold forging simulation of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy

    In this study, plasticity models have been developed to be used in cold forging simulations of AA7075-T6 alloy which is widely used in aviation industry. In addition, the coefficients of the obtained models have been calibrated using genetic algorithm optimization method. As the hardening rule in models; bilinear isotropic is combined with Chaboche's nonlinear kinematic hardening rule (three-termed). Plasticity models have been obtained by using the associated flow rule and Hill48 yield criterion in addition to the hardening rules. Experimental stress values have been compared with those obtained from the models. As a result, the most suitable hardening model for monotonic/cyclic loading deformation conditions is presented and the effects of the model parameters on the simulation results are shown. © 2022 Gazi Universitesi Muhendislik-Mimarlik.     Preservice computer science teachers' beliefs, motivational orientations, and teaching practices

    This multiple case study sought to examine preservice computer science teachers' beliefs, motivational orientations, and teaching practices, as currently, they remain to be adequately researched. Eight participants were selected via maximum variation sampling for this study of trainee teachers during their first practicums in Turkey. Trainee teachers were observed in the natural setting of a computer science classroom during their teaching try-outs. Interviews were conducted with them on either side of their pre-planned lessons. Results show that teacher efficacy, self-efficacy related to using and integrating technology, and classroom management influenced participants' teaching practices. Further research is necessary to examine the consistencies and contradictions between preservice CS teachers' beliefs and practices and how these change during field experience and exemplify good practice for the benefit of CS education

    Golden Ratio for the Foramen Magnum On CT Images: A Morphological and Morphometrical Study

    The foramen magnum (FM) is a transition zone between the spine and skull. There is a study in the literature showing the golden ratio (4.62) and harmony between both FM and the anteroposterior and transverse diameters of the skull. The aim of this study is to examine the existence of this ratio on CT images and to investigate whether this ratio changes according to the FM shape types. In this study, 402 adult CT images belonging to the Turkish population were examined. Maximum cranial length (MCL), maximum cranial width (MCW) and the FM length (FML) and FM width (FMW) were measured. The different shapes of the FM were macroscopically classified. The number and incidence of each type in the studied skull was registered. In the 402 CT images used in the study, 12 FM shapes were detected. Three of the shape types observed in our study have not been reported in the literature until now, and were found in our study for the first time. In addition, our data supported that by using the ratio of 4.62, there was a great harmony between the skull and FM. The results obtained from the research show that there is a ratio of 4.62 between the basic cranial measurements and FM dimensions in all shapes except triangular shape. It is thought that repeating the calculated coefficients over more different FM shapes will contribute to the effectiveness of the proposed golden ratio

    Hybrid Deep Feature Generation for Appropriate Face Mask Use Detection

    Mask usage is one of the most important precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, hygiene rules enforce the correct use of face coverings. Automated mask usage classification might be used to improve compliance monitoring. This study deals with the problem of inappropriate mask use. To address that problem, 2075 face mask usage images were collected. The individual images were labeled as either mask, no masked, or improper mask. Based on these labels, the following three cases were created: Case 1: mask versus no mask versus improper mask, Case 2: mask versus no mask + improper mask, and Case 3: mask versus no mask. This data was used to train and test a hybrid deep feature-based masked face classification model. The presented method comprises of three primary stages: (i) pre-trained ResNet101 and DenseNet201 were used as feature generators; each of these generators extracted 1000 features from an image; (ii) the most discriminative features were selected using an improved RelieF selector; and (iii) the chosen features were used to train and test a support vector machine classifier. That resulting model attained 95.95%, 97.49%, and 100.0% classification accuracy rates on Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3, respectively. Having achieved these high accuracy values indicates that the proposed model is fit for a practical trial to detect appropriate face mask use in real time
