Efficacy of Tragopogon graminifolius medicinal powder as an inulin source for laying hens
In an experiment, the efficacy of Tragopogon graminifolius (TG) plant powder as a medicinal supplement for laying hens was investigated. A total of 192 Hy-line (W36) hens that had been laying for 52 to 63 weeks, were used. They were allocated to four replicates of four treatments (12 birds per in each replicate) in a completely randomized design. Diets were formulated to contain 0%, 2%, 4% and 6% TG powder. Dietary augmentation with TG powder affected the production and blood indexes of laying hens significantly. Egg weight, egg production percentage, egg mass and feed intake were greatest and feed conversion ratio, high yolk colour index, and Haugh unit were best when the hens were supplemented with 6% TG powder. Eggshell thickness decreased when this high level of TG powder was used. The lowest blood white cell count was observed with 2% TG in the diet. The TG levels did not change the blood indexes meaningfully. Based on these results, the provision of TG to laying hens at up to 6% of their diet improved the production traits. © 2022, South African Journal of Animal Sciences. All rights reserved
Evaluation Of The Patient Consultations For Admission To Palliative Care: A Descriptive Study
Introduction: It is essential to comply with palliative care philosophy during consultations for hospitalisation purposes between specific medical branches and specialised palliative care services (SPCS). We aimed to evaluate the patients who were admitted or consulted to the palliative care service with a palliative care approach. Materials and Method: This descriptive study is based on retrospective review of data. The consultation requests delivered to the SPCS between December 1, 2019 and December 1, 2020 were evaluated through the hospital archive. The number of consultation requests delivered to the SPCS from other departments for hospitalisation purposes, demographic characteristics of patients, their acceptance and rejection rates, and reasons for which these decisions were made were examined. Results: Of the total 394 consultation requests, 53.6% (n = 211) were for males. The acceptance rate was 40.9% (n = 161). The most common primary diagnosis category was gastrointestinal cancers (21.6%), the most common consulting branch was emergency department (44.6%), the most common reason for rejection (53.2%) was the patient’s acute problems and the most common reason for acceptance was the need for nutritional support with a rate of 64.0%.Conclusion: It has been determined that most of the consultations requests were not accepted. Effects Of Some Invasıve Herbal Specıes On Natural Areas And Determınatıon Of Sılage Value: The Example Of Baglıca Town (Ankara), Turkey
Baglica town located in the centre of Turkey was chosen to determine the impact of rapid urbanisations on habitats and to examine the constricted habitat group and provide suggestions on which measures to take at the end of the review. It was determined that urbanisation and human pressure almost ruined the natural floristic structure of the locality and that some invasive plant species replaced this structure and gained a dominant characteristic. Field studies conducted in Baglica Locality in 2020 until the month of November have shown that many plant species are wiped out as a result of urbanisation. To obtain information about the homogeneity or heterogeneity of the distribution of invasive species in the study area, the frequency of encounters has been determined. On the other hand, considering the beginning of flowering and the end of flowering for Xanthium strumarium L. and Chenopodium album L. var. album, which are the most common in the region, silage was made using additives and dry matter, crude protein, ADF (Acid detergent fibre), NDF (Neutral detergent fibre) ratios and silage pH were determined. According to the results, dry matter, and ADF and NDF rates of silages increased with delaying harvest stage, but crude protein content decreased. Chemical Composition and Antifungal Activities of the Essential Oils of Thymus Species ( Thymus pectinatus, Thymus convolutus, Thymus vulgaris ) Against Plant Pathogens
The use of herbal extracts can be considered as an alternative method to minimize the effects of
synthetic chemical pesticide used to control plant pathogens on human and environmental health. The essential oils (EOs) obtained from Thymus pectinatus (TP), Thymus convolutus (TC), and Thymus vulgaris (TV) by hydrodistillation were analyzed by GC/MS. The main components of TP, TC, and TV were thymol (52.2%), p-cymene (17.03%), eucalyptol (24.47%), camphor (16.84%), α-pinene (12.88%), and carvacrol (72.47%). The antifungal activity of EOs against plant pathogens including Fusarium oxysporum f. sp radicis-Iycopersici (FORL), Phytophthora infestans, and Rhizoctonia solani was evaluated by using the agar dilution method. The EOs of TV and TP inhibited mycelium growth 100 % in FORL P. infestans, and R. solani at 4 μL/petri dose.The EOs of TC did not affect mycelial growth of R. solani and R. infestans while the mycelial growth of FORL was inhibited by 36.11%. Our findings suggested the use of these essential oils can prevent fungal infections on plants as alternatives to synthetic one
Evaluation of stillbirths and infant mortality before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a retrospective study
Objective The maternal-child health services remain an important indicator to look at how different countries have handled the pandemic. This study aims to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and child healthcare use and evaluate data on stillbirths and infant mortality. Methods In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, a retrospective analysis was performed on 293 stillbirths and 324 infant deaths, which occurred in Samsun Province of Turkey between 1 March 2018 and 1 March 2021. The study period was examined in three groups as pre-pandemic period 1 (1 March 2018-28 February 2019), pre-pandemic period 2 (1 March 2019-29 February 2020) and pandemic period (1 March 2020-28 February2021). Results The study found that the share of difficulties in delivering health-care services to the families (may be due to reasons such as difficulty in accessing health services for those living in rural areas, disruption of the referral chain) in stillbirths and infant deaths has decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to previous years (p = 0.037 in stillbirths, p = 0.002 in infant deaths). The mean number of follow-up visits during pregnancy has partially reduced during the pandemic (p > 0.05). Other variables of the health-care services have remained similar to years before the pandemic (p > 0.05). The rate of families without health insurance (p = 0.001 in stillbirths, p = 0.001 in infant deaths) and unemployed persons contributing to family budget (p = 0.012 in stillbirths, p = 0.016 in infant deaths) has significantly decreased during the pandemic. Conclusions In our study, it was determined that the variables of stillbirth and infant mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic period, and maternal and child health services in primary care and hospitals continued to provide services in a similar way to the pre-pandemic period. Compared to pre-pandemic periods during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was found that while the number of stillbirths was similar, there was a significant decrease in infant mortality
Is scoliosis related to mastication muscle asymmetry and temporomandibular disorders? A cross-sectional study
Objective: Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) may face motor control problems and health disability barriers during mandibular movements and chewing. However, studies investigating the extent of these disadvantages, and possible associated factors are quite limited in patients with AIS. This study was conducted to gain a deeper perspective on the effect of AIS on temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to contribute to the small amount of data on this subject.Methods: Twenty-nine patients with AIS and 29 age- and sex-matched asymptomatic controls participated in this cross-sectional study. Cobb's method was used to measure scoliosis curves. In both groups, the volume of the masseter muscle was determined on magnetic resonance imaging, and Helkimo and Fonseca anamnestic indexes were used to evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ).Results: It was observed that the TMD symptoms were higher in the AIS group (22.6- Helkimo and 1.2 - Fonseca) than the asymptomatic group (13.6 - Helkimo and 0.7 - Fonseca). There was no significant asymmetry in masseter volume in patients with AIS, however the volume of the masseter muscles was smaller in the AIS group (R = 14.6/L = 13.6) compared to the control group (R = 16.1/L = 16.2).Conclusions: The study results indicate that spinal curvatures affect the anatomical, biomechanical, and kinesiological features of the masticatory system, and individuals with AIS may experience more chewing problems than asymptomatic individuals. Examining musculoskeletal properties of masticatory system can provide information about the limitation of the TMJ in patients with AIS
The relationship between mindfulness and self-rated performance in student-athletes: the mediating role of depression, anxiety and stress
The effect mechanism of mindfulness on athletic performance is still trying to be understood. In the present study, we examined the mediating role of depression, anxiety, and stress in the relationship between mindfulness and self-rated performance.Three hundred sixty-three student-athletes (61.2% male, 38.2% female, M-age = 21.47, SD = 3.30) were asked to fill the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport (MIS), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), and the Self-rated Performance Questionnaire. While mindfulness was positively related to athletic performance, it was negatively related to depression, anxiety, and stress. The relationship between mindfulness and athletic performance was partially mediated by depression, anxiety, and stress. While the cross-sectional design does not permit causal inferences, these findings raise the possibility, in this population, that mindfulness may positively affect perceived performance by reducing depression, anxiety, and stress
A Comparison of Automated Segmentation and Manual Tracing of Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Quantify Lateral Ventricle Volumes
Objective: Ventricular volume measurements have been proposed as a useful biomarker for several neurological diseases. The goal of this study was to compare the performance of 3 fully-automated tools, volBrain (http://volbrain.upv.es ), ALVIN (Automatic Lateral Ventricle Delineation) (https://sites.google.com/site/mrilateralventricle/), and MRICIoud (http://mricloud.org ), with expert hand tracing to quantify lateral ventricle (LV) volume using magnetic resonance images. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 24 healthy subjects (age: 25.1 +/- 5.7 years, all male). Volumes derived from each automated measurement were compared to hand tracing results performed by 2 specialists to assess the percent volume difference using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), Dice index value, and Bland-Altman analysis. Results: The ICC agreement of the Manual_1 and Manual_2 was very good (0.979), and there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.001). The volume difference of all methods was similar. The CCC with MRICloud and ALVIN was higher than that of volBrain. Bland-Altman plots indicated that the 3 automated methods demonstrated acceptable agreement. Conclusion: Compared with hand tracing, the LV volumes generated by MRICloud were more accurate than those of volBrain and ALVIN. LV volume values can provide valuable data related to the volumetric dependencies of the anatomical structures in various clinical conditions that can now be easily obtained using automated tools
Evaluation of The Effects of Pomegranate Juice on Hepato-Nephrotoxicity in Male Rats Exposed to Aluminum
We aimed to measure biochemical parameters in rat serum such as electrolyte levels, kidney and liver function test, and lipid profile to analyze the effects of pomegranate juice towards AlCl3-induced hepato-nephrotoxicity. The twenty-eight wistar albino rats divided into four groups; control (Group I), pomegranate juice (4 ml/kg) (Group II), AlCl3 (8.3 mg/kg) (Group III) and pomegranate juice + AlCl3 (Group IV). Aluminum toxicity and the protective effect of pomegranate juice did not statistically different among groups in electrolyte levels, except for Mg and Cl (p<0.05). AlCL3 considerably increased serum AST, ALT, BUN and CREA levels and decreased ALB and TP (p<0.05). Pomegranate juice administration with or before AlCl3 notably restored serum biomarkers of liver and kidney function to near-normal levels. There was only a statistically significant difference in LDL and CHOL levels in lipid metabolism (p<0.05).
