    No full text
    Problem of the study: as the population ages, older people face a number of life-threatening problems. Loss of coordination, balance, weakening of muscles and bones - all these problems often lead to various injuries of the elderly. Thus, the better physical condition could help to avoid potential traumas. As the life expectancy of the population tends to increase, this work addresses a very relevant issue. Aim of the study: to perform assessment of physical capacity of the elderly (65+) and adapt the tests to Lithuanian population. Hypothesis: it was presumed that the physical capacity of the elderly (65+) deteriorates with age, and this could be assessed by applying various tests. Objectives: 1. To assess the physical capacity of elderly (65+) individuals of Kaunas district. 2. To determine the associations between the physical capacity of elderly (65+) individuals of Kaunas district and health risks. Conclusions: 1. The results of the study revealed that: • Arm muscle strength was significantly different between male and female in all age groups; • Waist flexibility was statistically different between male and female in all age groups, except the oldest individuals; • Shoulder arch mobility varied in all age groups, except 75-79 years; • Leg muscle strength significantly differed between male and female in the younger age groups, but no difference was found in the individuals older than 75 years; • Dynamic balance did not differ across the age groups; • Aerobic capacity significantly differed between male and female in the younger age groups (up to 74 years) only. 2. The results of the study revealed that the physical capacity of the elderly population of Kaunas district is insufficient, and the health-related risks usually increase from the age of 70 with the highest risks for the oldest individuals: • Decrease in joint mobility is significant in the age groups of 70-74 years male and the oldest (85+) female; • The risk of collapse due to low leg muscle strength is highest in the oldest (85+) age group of both male and female; • The risk of cardiovascular events due to decreased aerobic capacity is highest in the age groups of the oldest (85+) female and 80-84 years male

    The aim of the present study was to test the moderating role of body appreciation in the mediation model of media pressures, internalization of appearance ideals, and disordered eating in adolescents. One thousand four hundred and twelve Lithuanian adolescents (40.4% were boys, age range: 15–18 years) participated in the cross-sectional study. The mean age of the sample was 16.9 (SD (standard deviation) = 0.5) for girls and 17.0 (SD = 0.4) for boys. Adolescents completed a questionnaire consisting of measures of body appreciation (Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2)), disordered eating (Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire 6 (EDE-Q 6)), attitudes towards sociocultural pressures towards appearance (Sociocultural Attitudes towards Appearance Questionnaire 4 (SATAQ-4)), and time browsing internet for leisure purposes. To assess the primary hypotheses, moderated mediation models were tested separately in boys and girls. In girls, body appreciation moderated associations between media pressures and internalization of thin body ideals and between internalization of thin appearance ideals and disordered eating. In boys, body appreciation moderated only the association between media pressures and disordered eating. The effect of media pressures on disordered eating was the highest in boys with the lowest body appreciation. Body appreciation protects adolescent girls from internalization of thin appearance ideals in the presence of media pressures and from disordered eating in the case of internalization of thin body appearance ideals. In boys, body appreciation provides a protective effect from media pressures towards appearance to disordered eating behaviors. The findings of the present study could inform intervention programs that aim to prevent disordered eating, strengthen positive body image, and promote healthy eating in adolescent girls and boys. Specific programs might be beneficial in preventing disordered eating in boys with low body appreciation

    One of the most effective methodologies for muscle strength and power or to achieve optimal hypertrophy is eccentric training. Although exercise improves a person's health, there is also a physical stressor that can adversely affect a person's cognitive functions and CNS. Research problem: Analyzing the influence of strength training on cognitive function most studies use regular strength training protocol. However, it is not clear whether accentuated eccentric-type overload of supramaximal intensity, which causes mechanical muscle damage, affects cognitive function, range of motion, and muscle recovery. Aim of the research: To evaluate the influence of accentuated eccentric overload on cognitive function, range of motion and muscle recovery. Research tasks: 1. To study the influence of accentuated eccentric overload (AEL) on cognitive function and to compare the data with the data of the subjects of the traditional type of training (TTT) methodology; 2. To study the influence of AEL training methodology on the range of motion and to compare the data with the data of the TTT methodology; 3. To study the influence of AEL methodology on muscle recovery and to compare the data with the data of the TTT methodology group; Research methods: Anthropometric and body composition tests, flexibility / mobility tests, assessment of cognitive function, vertical jump, submaximal force and visual analog scale tests, recovery rate monitoring and statistical analysis methods. Conclusions: 1. Supramaximal intensity load did not affect cognitive function in the AEL group, but had a negative effect on the TTT group; 2. Muscle recovery was statistically significantly longer in the TTT group than in the AEL group; The amplitude of active hip abduction was significantly improved in the AEL group. After 24 h. since the leg press test, a decrease of range of motion in hamstrings were observed in the TTT methodology group;

    No full text
    Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a disease of the endocardial surface of the heart, caused by infection of the native or prosthetic valve or an indwelling cardiac device. Apart from IE predisposing risk factors that include heart conditions and medical procedures, the novel trajectories from demographic factors to perceived stress conditions have been under investigation in recent years. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations between perceived stress and demographic characteristics as well as clinical forms of IE among survivors of IE in Kaunas, Lithuania. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study among IE cases (n = 135) at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas Clinics Cardiology department during the period 2014–2017 was performed. Data about IE clinical features, sociodemographic characteristics and perceived stress level (Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10)) upon diagnosis were collected. Package “SPSS 25.0” was used in the statistical analysis. Logistic regression analysis was performed including gender, previous occupation, place of residence and clinical forms of IE in the analysis of perceived stress among survivors of IE. The STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies was used in this study. (3) Results: Perceived stress was experienced by 54.8 percent of the respondents. In the final model, the OR (odds ratio) of perceived stress for females was 2.07 as compared to men; for rural residents, the OR was 2.25 as compared to urban residents. These results were statistically significant. A tendency for increased OR of perceived stress for low-skilled workers as compared to high-skilled ones and classical IE clinical form as compared to non-classical form was observed, but these results were not statistically significant. (4) Conclusions: The present study is an attempt to focus the attention of IE researchers on the effects of psychological state in the disease development. Differences in perceived stress and some demographic characteristics, as well as tendencies of IE clinical forms, were observed among survivors of IE in Kaunas, Lithuania
