The aim of the work is to analyze the importance of swimming lessons for the prevention of drowning, the development of schoolchildren's mobility skills and emotional well-being. Tasks of the article: 1. To determine the effect of swimming lessons on the physical development of students and the development of motor skills. 2. To determine the effect of swimming lessons on developing students' swimming abilities. 3. Determine and evaluate the effect of swimming lessons on the expression of students' psycho-emotional characteristics. Subjects and methods: 78 students (46 boys and 32 girls) from 9 years of age participated in the study. The subjects were divided into control group (n=26) and experimental group (n=52) groups. The control group had physical education lessons twice a week, and the experimental group had swimming lessons twice a week. The duration of one session is 45 minutes. The duration of the study is 4 months, (excluding periods of school holidays), a total of 32 lessons were held. Before and after the research period, the subjects' movement abilities were assessed by physical capacity tests, and swimming abilities were assessed by expert assessment during special control exercises in the water. The Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) proposed by R. Goodman (1997) was used to study the expression of psycho-emotional characteristics, which was filled in by the students' parents. The SDQ questionnaire makes it possible to assess students' emotional problems, behavior, hyperactivity, and problems with relationships with peers. Conclusions: 1. Swimming lessons are an effective tool for developing students' physical development, they are as effective as physical education lessons for developing students' motor skills 2. In swimming lessons, students acquire new swimming skills, which is likely to reduce their risk of drowning. 3. Swimming lessons effectively affected the psycho-emotional state of students. Analyzing the parents' answers to the SDQ questionnaire, it can be seen that the expression of the characteristics of hyperactivity and social behavior changed more in the experimental group than in the control group.

Today, the sports industry is one of the most important sources of concern due to its negative environmental effects. Especially due to the intense competition schedule, teams and fans have to travel constantly. In this context, the aim of this study, which aims to fill the gap in the literature, is to calculate the carbon footprints of the teams in the Turkish and Lithuanian national basketball leagues based on their travels in the 2021–22 season. The research was limited to Turkey and Basketball national basketball league teams. In the study, the travel distances of the teams in both countries during the 2021–22 basketball season were used as a data set. In the study, the values used in the carbon footprint calculation of 2022 by the United Kingdom Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting and accepted as the IPCC carbon dioxide emission factor were used. While the carbon footprint, which is obtained by multiplying the emission factor directly by the distance covered by the vehicle type, is presented in tons; The average value calculated for each person was calculated in kg. In the sports sector, basketball is one of the most important sources of transportation-related carbon footprint due to its being one of the team sports and its intense competition schedule. According to the results of this research conducted specifically for Turkey and Lithuania, the total carbon footprint calculated for both countries is 53,029 tons. To make an assessment for both countries, in order to reduce travel based on sports; Arranging league calendars to include less travel, dissemination of green and clean energy-using (electric) vehicles, raising the awareness of club managers, developing environmental assessment policies specific to basketball federations, and increasing cooperation through awareness and training activities seem feasible for sustainable environment and basketball goals

Background: Use of banned performance enhancing substances in sport is one of the most widely recognized anti-doping rules violation. Research evidence suggests that self-regulatory efficiency is one of the key psychosocial processes related with doping. Therefore, aiming to generate more insights on the self-regulatory efficacy, sport-specific doping self-regulatory efficacy scale was proposed. The aim of the present study was to adapt and validate the Lithuanian version of the sport-specific doping self-regulatory efficacy scale. Material and Methods: The scale construct validity and reliability was tested using a sample of 453 athletes (mean age 20.37, SD = 2.29; 46% male). Structural validity was assessed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, convergent and discriminant validity of the scale were evaluated by assessing average variance extracted and also via correlational analyses. Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability values were used for reliability analysis. Results: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the one factor structure of the sport-specific doping self-regulatory efficacy scale. The results also indicated that the scale had sufficient convergent and discriminant validity. The results showed an excellent level of internal consistency. Conclusions: This study makes a contribution by confirming the validity and reliability of the Lithuanian version of the sport-specific doping self-regulatory efficacy scale

The aim of the present study was to compare disordered eating (DE), body image, and sociocultural and coach-related pressures between athletes of different age groups (adolescents and adults) and between athletes participating in weight-sensitive (WS) and less WS groups. A total of 1003 athletes participated in this study. The age range of the sample was 15 to 44 years, and the mean age was 18.9 ± 5.8 years (51.3% were female). Athletes who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study were provided with the study measures on DE, body image and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance. Vomiting, laxative misuse and excessive exercise were more prevalent in adolescent female athletes than adults, while dietary restraint was more common in adult male athletes than adolescents. Adolescent female athletes experienced higher sociocultural (family, peers) and sport-related (coach) pressures and a less positive body image compared with adult female athletes. Adult male athletes experienced higher overweight preoccupation, more DE and unhealthy eating habits, and engaged in more frequent self-weighing behaviour compared with adolescent males. When the effect of weight sensitivity in sports was tested, a higher prevalence of DE and overweight preoccupation, more frequent self-weighing, and higher body-image-related pressure from coaches were observed in female athletes participating in aesthetic weight-sensitive (WS) sports as compared with those participating in less WS sports. No differences in positive body image were observed in female WS and less WS sports. Special DE prevention and positive body image promotion programs are necessary for female competitive athletes and parents of adolescent female athletes, especially those participating in aesthetic ones. For adult male athletes, special programs aiming to promote healthy eating should be implemented to prevent DE and body image concerns. Special education about DE prevention is compulsory for coaches who train female athletes

Purpose of this case study– To consider whether the coach's use of emotional stimulation have a positive impact on athletes emotional development. The objective of this study – The objective of this study- to analyses if encouragement methods used by the coach can have any influence to judokas’ emotional development. Aim of the research: 1. To ascertain the level of emotional intellect in athletes according to their sex, age, training experience and if the coach’s sex had influence on said above. 2. Analyze applied methods of encouragement used according to sportsperson’s sex, age, athlete's experience, also taking into consideration coach’s sex. 3. Find any correlation between athlete’s emotional intellect and the encouragement method that has been used by the coach. Method of the research- a questionnaire presented to all participants and a thorough analysis of data has been carried out. The respondents presented a three-part questionnaire. The First part consisted of social-demographic data. The Second part consisted of a question about positive and negative encouragement methods being used by the coaches taking part in this study (questions have been formulated in accordance with I.Tilindienes dissertation (2000). In the third part, the questionnaire about an emotion intellect has been raised (Schutte et al., 2009). There are four scales in the questionnaire: understanding of emotions, control of own emotions, control of other peoples’ emotions, use of own emotions. Findings- during the research these findings have been made – older athletes have a better use of emotional intellect, when emotional intellect has been used according to athlete’s age, also different types of encouragement are more regularly used amongst female athletes. When evaluating and analysing encouragement methods used by the coaches’ it’s been concluded that both positive and negative encouragement methods are being used amongst the female groups. It’s been noted that girls receive way more positive encouragement during the training sessions and after, as well as during the competitions and after them. Male coaches have been noted to be using different/more varied positive encouragement methods more so than female coaches. It has also been noticed that male coaches are using negative types of encouragement more often than female coaches. When evaluating and analyzing the correlation between the emotional intellect and the method of encouragement used, these findings have been made: There’s very little correlation between the positive encouragement methods used and emotional understanding; weak correlation between positive encouragement methods and control of own emotions. Very weak correlation between frequency of positive encouragement methods used and athlete’s use of emotions. Raised hypothesis that athletes’ emotional intellect and their sporting achievements are closely related to positive encouragement methods used by the coach, have been partially found to be true

A modelling approach to disentangle the factors limiting muscle oxygenation in smokers /

    No full text
Cigarette smoking is associated with a lower exercise capacity and lower muscle fatigue resistance. This is at least partly attributable to carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) in the blood that via reduction in the oxygen-carrying capacity, and the left-shift of the Hb-dissociation curve would reduce tissue oxygenation. On the other hand, a reduced oxygen uptake due to mitochondrial dysfunction would result in improved oxygenation. We used previously collected capillarisation, myoglobin and estimated cellular maximal muscle oxygen consumption data derived from succinate dehydrogenase-stained sections from the vastus lateralis muscle from six smokers and five non-smokers. These data were fed into an expanded Krogh tissue oxygenation model to assess whether an impaired muscle fatigue resistance in smokers is primarily due to HbCO or impaired mitochondrial respiration. The model showed that in smokers with 6% and 20% HbCO (causing a left-shift of the Hb-dissociation curve) average muscle oxygenation was reduced by 1.9% and 7.2%, respectively. Muscle oxygenation was increased by 13.3% when maximal mitochondrial respiration was reduced by 29%. A combination of a 29% reduction in maximal mitochondrial respiration and 20% HbCO led to no significant difference in muscle oxygenation from that in non-smokers. This indicates that while HbCO may explain the reduced exercise capacity after just one smoking session, in chronic smokers impaired mitochondrial respiration appears more important in reducing oxygen extraction and exercise capacity with only a small contribution of the left-shift of the Hb-dissociation curve
