Introduction: Evaluation of the position of anterior teeth in the alveolar bone for planning implant treatments is so important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the thickness of buccolingual/palatal bone at anterior teeth roots and the angle between the tooth root axis and alveolar bone axis. Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the position of root apex, angle between the tooth root axis and alveolar bone axis as well as thickness of buccolingual/palatal bone in 2,4,6 mm from alveolar crest and root apex areas were evaluated in the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 360 maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth. The data were then analyzed by ANOVA and t-test. Results: Twenty eight females and 27 males with the mean age of 43.13±10.91 participated (181 female teeth and 179 male teeth) in the current study. In maxillary anterior teeth, the buccal bone thickness was thinner than the palatal bone and was significantly smaller in females than males (p≤0.0001). The thinnest area in buccal bone was in 4mm from alveolar crest in female’s lateral incisor of maxilla (0.09±0.02). The thickness of the palatal bone in the maxillary lateral incisors was significantly thicker in females than males. The thickness of lingual bone was thicker in mandibular lateral incisors and canines than in buccal bone and the lingual bone thickness was significantly thicker in males than females. The apex position of anterior teeth was predominantly buccally in the maxilla (%94), while it was middle in the mandible (%44). Conclusion: Due to the small thickness of buccal bone, evaluation of the position of implant fixtures in maxillary anterior teeth is of great importance

    Get PDF
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the first cause of mortality worldwide, with all the healthcare systems facing this very challenging issue. Aspirin continues to be the major gold-standard treatment worldwide in the prevention of thrombotic disease in patients with CVD, even though not all individuals respond to antiplatelet therapy in a similar way, being resistant to aspirin. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of laboratory defined aspirin resistance in CVD patients worldwide. Methods: Relevant articles were identified through searching EMBASE, PubMed/ MEDLINE, ISI /Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library, from January 2000 to February 2018. The methodological quality of the included studies was critically appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The pooled prevalence of laboratory defined aspirin resistance was computed using the Der Simonian-Laird random-effect model. Results: We included 65 studies, with a total of 10,729 patients. The overall prevalence of laboratory defined aspirin resistance in CVD patients was 24.7 (95%CI 21.4-28.4. Women were found to be at increased risk of laboratory defined aspirin resistance compared to men, with an odds ratio of 1.16 95%CI 0.87-1.54.  Conclusion: Doctors and healthcare providers should pay special attention to aspirin resistance since lack of awareness could cause problems and increase mortality in these patients, if not properly treated with higher aspirin doses

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: One of the psychological characteristics decreased with age is self-concept. Self-concept is the mental image of every person. The self-concept of the elderly is also based on their experiences during life stages. The aim of this study was to determine the factors affecting the promotion of self-concept in the elderly and to discuss them. METHODS: This review study was conducted through searching IranMedex Google Scholar, SID, PubMed and Scopus databases. In this research, the full-text studies published in English and Persian all over the world from 2008 to 2018 and focused on self-concept and elderly (in English and Persian) were investigated. After qualitative evaluation of studies, they were assessed based on relevance. Then, the best findings were chosen. FINDINGS: The findings showed that the improvement of self-concept in the elderly was related to some factors such as: body image, fitness and appearance, improvement of quality of life (QoL), improvement of self-esteem and memory review, low and moderate intensity aerobic training, high education, being married and having different roles in different social environments. CONCLUSION: As people with low self-concept experience a sense of inadequacy and worthlessness, it is imperative that caregivers adopt self-concept strategies appropriate to each elderly in order to improve the QoL in the elderly

Background: Candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections in immunosuppressed patients. The condition is usually treated with local and systemic antifungal agents. Given the antifungal properties of propolis, it appears this natural resin material can be effective in treating this infection. The aim of the present in vitro study was to compare the effect of Iranian propolis with those of routine antifungal agents on Candida species isolated from the oral candida lesions of patients with cancer, who had undergone chemotherapy, and a standard strain of Candida albicans. Methods: A total of 23 samples were collected from the oral cavities of patients with colorectal cancer, who had undergone chemotherapy with 5-fu. The fungal species were determined based on the results of culture in C. albicans chromagar medium, formation of the germ tube and formation of vesicles. The MIC of aqueous extract propolis (AEP) and ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) and amphotericin B (AMP-B), fluconazole (FL) and nystatin (NYS) were compared. Results: A total of 23 oral C. albicans samples were isolated. The MICs of FL and AMP- B were similar and less than those of EEP, AEP and NYS (P<0.001). In addition, the MIC of AEP was higher than EEP (P<0.001). The MIC of AMP- B on the strains isolated from the patients was more than that of the standard strain (P=0.012). Conclusion: The aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Iranian propolis exhibited antifungal activity, with a greater effect of the EEP compared to the AEP. &#160

Introduction: Periodontitis is a common disease in patients with diabetes. There is a significant relationship between hyperglycemic degree and severity of periodontitis, but the base of mechanism of this relationship has not been fully defined. Considering the important role of cytokines in periodontal pathogenesis and considering that there has been no study on the comparison of interleukin 35 (IL-35) in these diseases, the aim of this study was to determine the level of this salivary cytokine in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with generalized moderate chronic periodontitis. Material & Methods: Totally, 88 subjects (44 female, 44 males) with a mean age of 42.5±10.5 years old participated in this case control study. The subjects were divided into four groups and each group included 22 subjects: Group 1: generalized moderate chronic periodontitis patients with type 2 diabetes, Group 2: generalized moderate chronic periodontitis patients without diabetes, Group 3: diabetic patients with normal periodontium, Group 4: healthy periodontium and non-diabetic group (control) Then saliva were collected and centrifuged, the amount of IL-35 was determined with commercial ELISA kit. Data were analyzed . ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests were used to compare the groups. Results: The Mean±SD of IL-35 was significantly higher in the control group (22.59±8.36, p0.05). Conclusion: The salivary IL-35 level is decreased in both periodontitis and type 2 diabetes. However, diabetes mellitus does not exacerbate this decline in patients with periodontitis

    Get PDF
Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the apical microleakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement, and biodentine. Materials & Methods: The study was performed on 76 single-canal human teeth. Root canals were prepared by ProTaper rotary system, then obturated with gutta-percha. Thereafter, the apical section of the teeth was cut from 3 mm above the apex, and 3 mm of gutta-percha was removed by an ultrasonic device from the apical part of the root canals. Then, 60 teeth were randomly assigned to 3 groups and filled with MTA, CEM cement, and biodentine. Control groups were also prepared. All surfaces of the samples were covered with two layers of nail polish, except for the surfaces near the apical filling. In each group, half of the samples were immersed in indian ink for 3 days and the other half for 7 days. After clearing, the samples were examined using stereo microscope with 20x magnification and dye penetration was evaluated. Data analysis was performed using Repeated measures and One-way ANOVA and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean microleakage for MTA, CEM cement and biodentine on the third day were 2576.80 and 2567.60, 2370.20 and the mean on the seventh day were 2431.50, 1516.50 and 1560.70, respectively. The mean leakage was not statistically different in samples on the third and seventh days. The difference of microleakage was statistically significant among these materials. Conclusion: It seems the biodentine compared to MTA and CEM cement have better apical sealing ability
