Comparison of the effect of spreader and T-Splay graft in internal nasal valve management
Background The midvalve area is one of the most important anatomical points in rhinoplasty procedures. An additional intervention may be required to ensure there is no narrowing in this region. For this reason, several different techniques are used. Spreader graft technique is the most common of all these methods. T-splay graft technique is an alternative method that can effectively widen the angle of the midvalve. The present study compares the anatomical and functional outcomes of these two methods.
Methods The study included 60 cases who presented to our clinic for rhinoplasty. The cases were evaluated demographically, anatomically, and functionally, and the acquired data were recorded. All cases were preoperatively administered the Visual Analogue Scale, the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale, and the modified Glatzel mirror test. By randomly selecting the cases, midvalve restoration was performed with a spreader graft in 30 cases and a T-splay graft in 30 cases.
Results A comparison of the Visual Analogue Scale, the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale, and the modified Glatzel mirror test scores revealed that the scores of both groups at postoperative months 3 and 6 were significantly different from the preoperative measurement values.
Conclusions Although spreader graft technique is a very effective method in midvalve management, we believe that T-splay graft technique may also produce effective outcomes. In addition, the midvalve functions could be better simulated anatomically and functionally with T-splay graft technique. Therefore, we believe that T-splay graft technique is an alternative method that can be safely used in selected cases
Effects of age and sex on some hematological and biochemical parameters in Hair goats
This study was performed to determine the blood reference values of hematological and biochemical parameters in Hair goats at different ages. For this aim, clinically healthy Hair goats (n = 180, ages of six month and 1-3 years male and female) were used to collect blood samples. In whole blood, white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)and red cell distribution width (RDW) were evaluated. The levels of, albumin, total protein, globulin, glucose, total bilirubin, urea, creatinine, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), creatine kinase (CK), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and iron levels were investigated in sera. Age and sex had no effect on the cell structures of blood. In the either sex (male or female), age had no effect. However, sex had a significant effect on the blood cell structures except for WBC, HGB, and HCT. Albumin, protein, calcium, AST, ALT, ALP and magnesium values were not different among groups. Both the age and sex of the goats had significant effects on blood levels of glucose, phosphorus, urea, cholesterol, creatinine, GGT, CK and total bilirubin. In conclusion, this was the first study reporting the hematologic and biochemical parameters in blood of the Hair goats. The results indicated that these parameters could show variations under physiological conditions due to age and gender
Ultrasonographic evaluation of distal femoral and talar cartilage thicknesses in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis and their relationship with disease activity
Introduction The aims of this study were to compare the distal femoral and talar cartilage thicknesses by ultrasonography (US) between patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and healthy controls and to investigate the potential relationship of these parameters with disease activity and clinical parameters.
Methods Fifty-five patients with RA with a disease duration of up to 12 months (RA group), and 55 healthy volunteers (control group) were included in the study. The bilateral distal femur and talus cartilage thicknesses of all participants were measured by US and compared between the groups. The relationship of the results with the clinical data of the patients with early RA was investigated.
Results The distal femur (medial, central, and lateral) and talus cartilage thicknesses of both extremities were significantly lower in the RA group. The tender joint count was found to be slightly to moderately negatively correlated with cartilage thickness. However, no correlation was found between the swollen joint count and cartilage thickness. In addition, the disease activity scores were moderately and inversely correlated with cartilage thickness in certain areas.
Conclusion Our results suggest that serum Fet-A level could be a novel biomarker for assessment of activity status in patients with GPA or TA
An integrated multi-criteria structural equation model for green supplier selection
The aims of the current study are to determine the criteria to be considered in a green supplier selection (GSS) process, develop an integrated decision-making approach using structural equation modelling (SEM) and fuzzy additive ratio assessment (ARAS) techniques to rank suitable suppliers, and investigate the effectiveness of this approach in collective decision-making. The study’s ultimate objective is to propose a method created from the perspective of fuzzy logic in which criterion weights are determined using SEM to resolve decision-making challenges such as GSS, in which a compromise solution is desired. In the first stage of the study, relevant literature as examined in detail. Eight main criteria and 27 sub-criteria were detected, taking into account classical, green, and social supplier selection (SS) criteria. A questionnaire was administered to 254 participants who were actively involved in SS processes for their companies, and the data were analyzed using SEM. In the second phase, six suppliers were evaluated considering the criteria found to have a positive impact on GSS, and fuzzy ARAS was applied. The results showed that the factors affecting GSS are quality (0.291), social responsibility (0.222), service (0.21), cost (0.149) and green product (0.128). The study presents an effective, objective, and fast method that can be used in decision-making problems such as GSS, that prevents potential loss of information and lack of transparency through an integrated approach, and that can be tested with a generalizable framework. The proposed hybrid method is an efficient and practical approach that can be tested on many decision-making problems, such as SS
Performance analysis of electrode materials in electro discharge machining of monel K-500
The present work focusses on the electrical discharge machining (EDM) of Monel K 500 super alloy with different electrodes. The study's objective is to examine the effects of process parameters and electrode materials (Cu, W-Cu, and graphite) in terms of surface quality, material removal rateand electrode wear. In this context, EDM experiments have been designed and performed using the L27 standard orthogonal array of the Taguchi method with a statistical approach. The outcomes of this study reveal that the current plays an important role to improve the EDM machining performance of Monel K 500. The surface quality is approximately 11.62% and 55.52%, respectively better when Monel K-500 alloy is machined with copper electrodes compared to those in W-Cu and graphite electrodes. Moreover, The W-Cu electrode's wear is approximately 15.73% and 21.05%, respectively less than those of graphite and Cu electrodes in optimum processing conditions. Graphite electrodes are better than Cu and W-Cu electrodes in terms of material removal rate. The statistical results also show that the estimation equations developed to select the optimum production conditions to give high accuracy results

Effects of sous vide cooking on physicochemical, structural, and microbiological characteristics of cuttlefish, octopus, and squid
This study investigated the physicochemical (pH, moisture, protein, fat, ash, TBA), color (L*, a*, b*), and textural properties (TPA and extended craft knife), mineral content, fatty acid composition, and microbiological properties of raw and sous vide (SV) cooked cuttlefish (at 95°C for 13 min), octopus (at 95°C for 30 min), and squid (at 95°C for 10 min). The pH, protein, and L* values of these samples increased with the cooking. No significant alterations in lipid oxidation were determined in the samples. A gradual decrease in fatty acid with SV cooking was observed. Sulfur was found as the major mineral content in these cephalopods, followed by potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. Thermal treatment influenced the textural properties of the SV cooked samples, in which hardness, gumminess, chewiness, and resilience lower than raw samples was observed. The firmness values of the samples also decreased with the SV cooking. The treatment had significant positive effects on the total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, total coliform, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus counts. Vibrio parahaemolyticus (<2 log cfu/g) was not found in the raw and cooked samples. As a result, SV was found to be an effective cooking method for preparing cuttlefish, octopus, and squid
Circulating miRNAs in maternal plasma as potential biomarkers of early pregnancy in sheep
MicroRNA (miRNA) plays an important role in the control of gene expression and is implied in many biological functions, including embryo implantation and development. The aim was to assess plasma miRNA profiles during the peri-implantation and ascertain potential candidate miRNA markers for early pregnancy diagnosis in ovine plasma. The plasma samples were obtained from a total of 24 ewes on days 12 (pre-implantation; P12, n = 4), 16 (implantation; P16, n = 4) and 22 (post-implantation; P22, n = 4) after mating, and on their corresponding days of 12 (Pre-C; C12, n = 4), 16 (Imp-C; C16, n = 4) and 22 (Post-C; C22, n = 4) of the estrous cycle. The miRNA profiles in plasma were assessed by microarray technology. We detected the presence of 60 ovine-specific miRNAs in plasma samples. Of these miRNAs, 22 demonstrated a differential expression pattern, especially between the estrous cycle and early pregnancy, and targeted 521 genes. Two miRNAs (oar-miR-218a and oar-miR-1185-3p) were confirmed using RT-qPCR in the ovine plasma samples. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of target genes established six functional modules, of which modules 1 and 3 were enriched in the common GO terms, such as inflammatory response, defense response, and regulation of immune response. In contrast, module 2 was enriched in the developmental process involved in reproduction, embryo development, embryonic morphogenesis, and regulation of the developmental process. The results indicate that miRNAs profiles of plasma seemed to be modulated during the peri-implantation stage of pregnancy in ewes. Circulating miRNAs could be promising candidates for diagnosis in early ovine pregnancy
Integrating technology into an engineering faculty teaching context: examining faculty experiences and student perceptions
The main purpose of this study was to examine a case in the context of a Faculty Technology Mentoring (FTM) program that provided customised technology integration support to faculty members in different disciplines. The FTM was implemented as a university-wide professional development model to enhance faculty members’ adoption of technology into their teaching practices. Following the embedded-case design method, this study investigated a one-to-one mentoring process within the program using TPACK as a framework for the analysis. The analysis of faculty experience revealed that the mentoring project had a positive influence not only on the teaching strategies of the instructor whilst delivering the content, but on the attitudes towards technology utilisation in general within the higher education context
The determination of medicinal value on the economy of plants grown in the province of Aksaray and used in traditional medicines
In this study, medicinal plants grown in Aksaray province were identified, the possibilities of using these plants in traditional medicine were investigated and their economic medical value was presented. Aksaray is located in an extremely important place with its geographical location,socio-economic structure and climatic characteristics; in terms of plant diversity. The place has a very rich flora, especially in terms of halophyte plants. The wide diversity of plants in Aksaray also enablesthe people to use these plants for treatment. The use of plants in various ways for treatment has led to an increase in the economic importance of plants used in traditional medicine. This situation has also increased the importance of studies which are carried out to determine the economic value of plants. From this point of view, plant species(70 species) grown in, and around Aksaray, and used in traditional medicine were identified in the research. In the determination of these plant species, detailed flora studies carried out in the region were selected as the baseline. In the second stage of research,face-to-face interviews were conducted with local people(N:565) and herbalists (N:15) living in the sample areas (1 district center and 25 villages and 3 towns). In these interviews, the data about the local names of the plant species, the purpose of use,how they are used for which treatment, which parts are used, the way of sale, the sales amount and the sales price were obtained. In the third stage, these data were analyzed using SPSS(26) and ANOVA package program. The results were quantitatively evaluated using ethnobotanical indexes (ICF, RFC, UV and RI). In this way,the use-value, and importance value of the medicinal plant species in the region were determined. In the last stage, an economic medical value analysis was made for the selected plant species using all the data, and an average medical value calculation was made. In the research, 30 families,61 genera, and 70 taxa grown in Aksaray province and used in traditional medicine were identified through interviews with both local people, and herbalists.Among these families, it was determined that the families having the most taxa were Asteraceae with 16%, Rosaceae with 13%, Lamiaceae with 9%, Malvaceae with 6%, Apiaceae with 4%, Fabaceae with 4%, Salicaceae with 4%, respectively. It was also identified that the most sold parts of these plant species were flowers (28%), leaves ( 27%), fruits(15.7%) , seeds (9.9%), and above-ground parts (4.5%),respectively.It was determined that taxa used for therapeutic purposes were mostly used in gastroenterological diseases with 37.14%, in enhancing the immune system with 24.29%, in respiratory system diseases with 22%, in food with 21.43%, and in circulatory system diseases with 15.71%. According to the results of the research, when we specify the identified plant species according to their use values, it was found out that walnut (junglas regia), garlic (allium sativum), grape (vitis vinifera), linden (tiliato mentosa), quince (cydonia oblonga), spearmint (mentha spicata), onion (allium cepa), thyme (thymus sipyleus), corn (zea mays), black cumin (nigella arvensis), rosehip (rosa canina) and may chaomile (matricaria chamomilla) have high UV values, andare used both for food and therapeutic purposes. When we list these plant species according to their importance, we can see that chamomile (matricaria chamomilla), nettle (urtica dioica), black cumin ( nigella arvensis ), garlic (allium sativum ), golden herb (helichrysum plicatum) , rosehip (rosa canina), jujube (ziziphus zizyphus) have high RI values, and the importance of these species is relatively higher than other species. According to the results of the research, the average medical value of these plant species used in traditional medicine was calculated as 380 TL/year, and the added-value to be provided to the household income from the production of each plant species was calculated as 40 TL per kilo.It has been determined that the high medical value of these plants, which do not have any cost, will provide a positive added-value to the household income through the production or collection of these plants by the local people. It is predicted that the increase in interest in natural plant species and treatment methods with these plants, especially in recent years, will create an economic proxy effecton the medical value, and accordingly, the average medical value, which has been revealed, will tend to increase continuously. The results of the research showed that these species, which are grown in Aksaray and widely used in traditional medicine, have a very high economic medical value and sustainable use-value for the local people. For this reason, the involvement of local people should be ensured and even encouraged in the protection and sustainable usage of these types. It is also important in terms of preserving this traditional knowledge and transferring it to future generations
