Classification of computerized tomography images to diagnose non-small cell lung cancer using a hybrid model

    No full text
Lung cancer arises from the abnormal and uncontrolled reproduction of parenchymal cells. Among all cancer cases, lung cancer is one of the prevailing types. Prevalence and death rates of the cancer increases day by day. From this point of view, early diagnosis and treatment of this cancer increases survival times and rates. The main idea in the development of the method presented in this publication is to increase the rate of early diagnosis. Computerized Tomography (CT) is the major screening method when encountered with suspicious symptoms. The cancer can be determined with CT and besides subtyping can be done. Diagnosing the disease with the human eye can sometimes lead to the emergence of deficiencies. This is one of the problems faced today. In this direction, the study in this paper presents a hybrid method to predict and diagnose the lung cancer from CT images to minimize potential human errors. Using the method, feature maps of the CT images of the dataset are obtained using the previously trained DarkNet-53 and DenseNet-201 deep model architectures. DarkNet-53 and DenseNet-201 architectures were chosen because they gave the best feature extraction results among 7 different architectures. The purpose of using the two architectures is to combine two high-performance models to create a hybrid classification method with high accuracy. Feature concatenation is applied to increase the diagnosis accuracy. To optimize the performance and computation cost of the proposed method, the Neighborhood Component Analysis (NCA) optimization method is used in determining and analysis of the features with more information. Therefore, features with less contribution in the accuracy are eliminated. Next, new feature maps are achieved by grading all features upon their weights and applying an elimination using a threshold value. The new feature maps are classified using Classical Machine Learning (CML) classifiers. Classification accuracies on DarkNet-53 architecture were calculated as 69.11% with SoftMax and 96.25% with Ensemble Classifiers and Nearest Neighbor Classifiers respectively. Similarly, accuracies on DenseNet-201 architecture were calculated as 68.29% with SoftMax and 97.39% with Ensemble Classifiers and Nearest Neighbor Classifiers respectively. With the proposed hybrid model, the Ensemble Classifiers reached the accuracy of 98.69% and the highest accuracy is achieved by using k-Nearest Neighbor Classifier (kNN) with the value of 98.86%. The results are supported with detailed illustrations

Teachers attend many courses, seminars, and workshops at the national and international levels to ensure their professional development. This study aims to investigate the opinions and achievements of the teachers who participated in the tenth Turkish Teacher Program (TTP) held at CERN. An explanatory case study was preferred as the research model. The study group consists of 12 teachers who participated in the CERN TTP-10 event. A semi-structured interview form was created to collect data. The form created by the researchers was finalized by taking expert opinions, and the final form consists of four questions. Interviews lasted approximately 30 minutes with each teacher. The descriptive analysis method was used in the analysis of the obtained data. In the results obtained, it is seen that the teachers aim to achieve the widespread impact of the program through students, teachers, and society. While doing this, they state that they can try many ways such as seminars, presentations, experience sharing, experimentation, and student clubs. Teachers' opinions about the program were generally positive, and they stated that their self-confidence and motivation about the effects of the lessons they conduct at school increased. It is seen that teachers want to extend the program period regarding the effectiveness of the program, reduce the theoretical lessons, and make more applications. As a result, the CERN TTP-10 activity positively affected the participating teachers. Increasing the number of such international events and ensuring that more teachers reach them is among the research suggestions.Öğretmenler mesleki gelişimlerini sağlamak amacı ile ulusal ve uluslararası düzeyde birçok kurs, seminer ve çalıştaya katılmaktadırlar.

*Sayın Kasar, Kadriye ( Aksaray, Yazar ) *Bulut, Ülkü ( Aksaray, Yazar )Caregivers are an important source of support for patients in palliative care. Comfort is an important concept in nursing care for both patients and their families, and nurses aim to increase comfort. The aim of the study was to determine the comfort level and influencing factors in caregivers of palliative care patients. The research sample consisted of 102 caregivers related to palliative care patients. The data were obtained with an Individual Information Form, the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the End of Life Comfort Scale (Caregiver/Family). The study was conducted in the palliative care clinic of Aksaray University Training and Research Hospital between October 2018 and April 2019. There was a significant relationship between the total comfort score of the caregivers and the patient's performance status, the caregivers' age, their economic situation, the length of the caregiving period and receiving help in care (social support) (p < 0.05). Providing comfort is an important function and challenge for holistic nursing care, as comfort is a lifelong need in health and disease. Caregivers in the risk group should be aware of this issue and necessary precautions should be taken

The staying young phenomenon and consuming to demonstrate agelessness

Age, aging, and age stereotypes are subjects examined by different disciplines, and these phenomena have also been the subject of consumer behavior as they affect attitudes, behavior, and perceptions. Meanwhile, the negative stereotype of aging leads to the denial of aging and changes in the definitions related to age. The denial of aging and the new age types, which are generally defined as younger than the chronological age, are naturally a reflection of the perception that people can “stay young,” and this mood can affect consumption patterns. Although the information that gives rise to these predictions is included in the literature, the concept of staying young has not been examined in detail, and its relation with consumption has not been discussed. The aim of this study is to fill this gap and define the “Staying Young Phenomenon” (SYP) and explain its relationship with consumption through the Consuming to Demonstrate Agelessness (CDA) concept which is also described in this work. For this purpose, two complementary studies were conducted. Using the data obtained from the qualitative research that constituted the first study, quantitative research was conducted and the dimensions of the SYP and CDA were defined. According to these findings, SYP is defined by the “Effort to Look Young,”, “Having Expectations From Life,” “Commitment to Life,” “Avoiding Death,” “Being Positive and Energetic,” and “Glorifying Youth” factors whereas CDA is defined by “Unlimited and Unconscious Spending,” “Personal Development and Personal Care Expenditures,” “Personal Appearance Expenditures,” and “No Regrets Spending” factors. Results of the analysis reveal a significant relationship between SYP and CDA and suggest that the effect of SYP on consumption may be higher than the effects of different age types and social status. The results obtained regarding SYP, CDA, and their relation are discussed in detail in relation to the concepts of age and aging, and suggestions for future studies are presented

Background YouTube is an increasingly used platform for medical information. However, the validity of health-related information on psoriatic arthritis (PsA) on YouTube has not been determined. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and quality of YouTube videos concerning PsA. Materials and methods A YouTube search was performed on April 18, 2021, using the keyword "psoriatic arthritis." Two independent raters accessed the content, source, and detailed characteristics of the included videos. The reliability and quality of the videos were analyzed using the modified DISCERN score, Journal of the American Medical Association benchmark criteria score, and global quality scale score. Results Of the 200 videos screened, 155 were included in the study after applying the exclusion criteria. A total of 132 (85.2%) videos revealed useful information about PsA, whereas the remaining 23 (14.8%) were misleading. Video interaction parameters including the median number of views, views per day, likes, dislikes, and comments demonstrated no significant difference between the two groups. The videos posted by universities and professional organizations displayed the highest reliability and quality scores. Conclusion The majority of YouTube videos on PsA contained useful information. However, physicians should alert patients to the possibility of misinformation and non-validated sources. Professional organizations in the field of rheumatology, such as the American College of Rheumatology and European League Against Rheumatism, should consider collaborating with YouTube to deliver high-quality content

    No full text
In this study, the biosorption capacity of chitin based shrimp shell waste (Cht-SSW) was investigated in Zn2+ containing wastewater. Initial findings showed that Cht-SSW is an effective biosorbent due to high porosity and functional groups. Within the scope of the study, the effects of Cht-SSW dose, time, pH, and temperature on the treatment efficiency of Zn2+ were evaluated by batch experiments. As a result of the adsorption process, the Cht-SSW dose = 0.5 g/L, pH = 6.32, and time = 30 min were determined as the optimal conditions, and the maximum Zn2+ removal efficiency under these conditions was obtained as approximately 84.12%. The surface morphology and functional groups of Cht-SSW used in the study were determined using FTIR and SEM. In order to determine the biosorption process, analysis was carried out with kinetic and isothermal models. The results were found to fit best with the pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.990) for the kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.993) for the isotherms. The isotherms and kinetics confirmed that Cht-SSW had a high value of adsorption capacity. The values of ΔH°, ΔS°, and ΔG° showed that Cht-SSW was applicable, spontaneous, and endothermic for Zn2+. In addition, a statistics-based experimental design with a response surface methodology was used to study the effect of process operating conditions, including pH, temperature, and chitin concentration. Experimental results point out Cht-SSW is a biosorbent that eco-friendly, economical, easily available, and efficiently (4e) on the removal of Zn2+ from aqueous solution

    No full text
In this study, the effects of the extrusion process on the phase structure and shape memory properties of NiMn type Heusler alloy were investigated. For this, Ni55.5Mn25Ga18.5Mo2 alloy obtained by melting method in vacuum induction furnace was extruded at 950 °C, 1000 °C and 1050 °C, respectively. XRD analyzes of the obtained specimens were performed to compare crystallographic differences. Afterwards, metallurgical microscope and SEM photographs were obtained to see the phase structures of the specimens. Phase transformation temperatures were also determined by DSC analysis. In addition, EDS and MAPPING observations of elemental analysis were made. Then, Vickers micro-hardness analyses were performed to examine the effects of extrusion process on microhardness. As a result, the shape memory properties were negatively affected by the increase in extrusion temperature. Generally, with the increase in this temperature, the amount of high temperature phases increased significantly, as micro-hardness values slightly increased. In addition to this, martensitic phase structures decreased with increasing extrusion temperature and martensite and austenite transition temperatures could not be observed in DSC curves

Our study aimed to compare the cecum of German mast geese with other poultry species through macroanatomy and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Adult German geese were used as research material, which were obtained from its breeders and died of various causes. In the study, after determining the macroanatomical features of the German mast goose cecum, it was examined with a scanning electron microscope (JEOL JSM-5600LV) and the general structures were photographed. The craniodorsal of the rectum of German mast geese was shaped with two ceca, giving right and left arms to the cranial symmetrical to each other near the end of the ileum. The macroanatomy of the apex, corpus, and basis cecum parts was examined in the cecum divided into two. In the study, it was determined that villus extensions were sparse in the right and left apex ceci parts in the cecum SEM images of the German mast geese, while the number of the corpus and basis ceci parts was higher. As a result, the macroanatomy and scanning electron microscopic findings of German mast geese cecum were examined in detail and its differences from other poultry species were revealed

A novel breath molecule sensing system based on deep neural network employing multiple-line direct absorption spectroscopy

    No full text
A novel ppb-level biomedical sensor is developed to analyze breath samples for continuous monitoring of diseases. The setup is very compact, consisting of a distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) and a single-pass absorption cell. To make the sensor more compact and functional, a deep neural network (DNN) model is utilized for predicting gas concentrations. In order to evaluate the performance of the sensor, N2O is used as the target molecule. A minimum detection limit of 500 ppb is achieved in a single-pass absorption cell configuration. The model is trained on multiple N2O/CO2 absorption lines (instead of an isolated line) with concentrations between 0 to 500 ppm generated using the HITRAN database. The trained model is tested on measured spectra and compared to a non-linear least squares fitting algorithm. The coefficients of determination (R2) were found to be 0.997 and 0.981 for the predictions of N2O concentrations in the N2O/N2 gas mixture and the breath air, respectively. The accuracies of 2.5% and 2.9% were achieved by the sensor for both cases
